It really drives me crazy how you can't look around while freefalling.
More body control would be excellent as well. Being able to turn around and fall backwards as you look up would be epic, as well as the ability to do flips.
That was one thing they made worse in this sequel. The first was great for freefalling, not only did you have control over the camera at all times so you can create those action-y shots often but you also had much more control on your fall too. You travelled a fair bit in that but here you barely move a couple dozen metres away from your initial jump.
I just realized last night that if you pull back on the left stick as far as it will go (Rico leaning back, almost vertical, and noticable "slowing down") you can actually cover way more distance horizontally but you fall faster and your parachute won't always save you from slamming into the ground if you open it late since it stops the forward movement but keeps the downward momentum closer to what it was.
so as a last-ditch effort to dodge a cliff or something, it works well for moving forward but it's pretty awkward.
also, if you're high enough (hurr hurr) you can freefall much like you would parachute; i.e. zinging downwards to gain speed, then leaning back to swoop forward and gain horizontal distance, rinse repeat ad nauseum.
it always helps to follow up a swoop with another zing because otherwise when you open your chute you'll just be falling, and without enough room to swoop down and out (or something to grapple on) you'll just hit the ground.
I feel like my vernacular might not be properly conveying my meaning here (it is very technical, afterall :winky:) so I'm gonna try to record a video tonight showing what I"m talking about, though I'm sure most of you already have it figured out.
No, I got what you're saying and I don't have the game. heh.
But doing that makes the issues with the camera all the more apparent. When pulling back on the left stick, you can't actually look down and see how far away the ground is thanks to the lack of camera control. Herein lies the games biggest fault.
You can look down somewhat to see that you don't hit anything but only at like a 45 degree angle instead of straight down so you might still miss a big tree or building in your path.
Do you have the ability to record vids? Because I would love to see what would happen if Rico fell from a ridiculous height onto solid ground without parachute. Just a simply belly flop would suffice. I just want to see if he bounces.
edit: Haha, I just reread that and it comes across as psychotic.....

So the Ulars have some pretty cool missions.
The one where you destroy the rockets before they lift off is exactly what I expected from this game. I can't be the only one who had 'Highway to the Danger Zone' playing in my mind as I destroyed the final one.

I shot down a plane with my plane, it took like 15 minutes and we crossed half the map and then like 20 miles out to sea.
Isy, I'll try to remember to record freefall suicide vid for you. It's nothing spectacular but it's amusing.
It's espescially amusing if it glitches out and you don't die because he spouts awesome one liners: "Salva mia!" or "Whew! That was too close for comfort!"

Awesome bud! I owe you one :^:
I really need to man up and get a video card, its just so scary
It's fucking awful, it's a terrible game that "looks" even worse when compared to the marvelously awesome and insanely well made JC2. Now I know you liked JC1, but seriously, it's completely killed in the comparison, JC2 beats the hell out of it in every single possible way.
No amount of small details like how free fall was freer in 1 will make any difference, because it's a matter of several orders of magnitude.

Yeah, I'm not saying its in any way better than this sequel, I'm just saying the freefalling camera control made freefalling better in that game. Everything else? Yeah, in comparison it's very hard to go back. But I make no excuses for my love of that game. It was beautiful at the time. Well, flying high into the sunset was, the animation was the worst. Rico had a stick up his ass.

go find the Mile High Club
Totally found it on accident. Laughed my ass off.
Also I got into one of those military jets with both missiles and a minigun.
Holy shit those things are fun.
Map -> Set Waypoint to nearby location -> Fly there in about 10 seconds -> Blow everything to hell
SAM sites ain't got shit on me.

When playing this game, I like to think that they hired somebody specifically to suggest how to make it realistic, then purposely did the exact opposite.
"Maybe the sniper rifles should have sway"
"Rico needs realistic fall damage, anything more then a few metres and he shouldn't be able to walk away unharmed"
And so on.

"Rico should just have one parachute that he has to fold and stuff back into his backpack after each use."
What weapons do you all usually roll with and upgrade first?
I'm thinking of ditching this Rico's signature gun that came as a preorder bonus or something because the only way to get more ammo for it is to buy another one, and I'm a cheap bastard.
I like the assault rifle for my 2 hander.
Thinking maybe SMG and something like a shotgun or revolver for my 1-handers.
I've been running with dual pistols and the assault rifle, since it's not too hard to come across ammo for either and they're fairly cheap if you run out. That last point is now moot, since I installed the mod that makes the black market free, though :P
A friend of mine says he has good results with one pistol, one SMG, and a rocket launcher, but I haven't tried it. I always end up wasting ammo with the SMG, so I'm not that big a fan of it.

At the moment I'm running Pistol, SMG and Assault Rifle (kinda like first, second and third gear) as that way I'm unlikely to run out of ammo during a mission, but damn if it isn't tempting to use the Sniper Rifle.
I rock dual fully upgraded SMGs and the Rocket Launcher. Haven't found any reason to switch. At 5 stars and dual wielded SMGs can tear through cars and even helicopters like butter.

Wrecking havoc in a chopper while dogfighting other choppers is so much fun.
"Rico should just have one parachute that he has to fold and stuff back into his backpack after each use."
They didn't listen to this guy. The parachute detaches when you go back into freefall mode. You can see it pull off normally when landing too, the straps detach. So rico has an infinite amount of parachutes.

I genuinely love that they don't bother to explain the infinite parachutes, especially since in the opening cutscene:
Rico's parachute is shredded by flak on the descent and yet you can keep using another one like nothing happened once you get into gameplay.
Right from the start, the game is going "Oh, I'm sorry, did you want continuity? I was too busy riding on top of a jet to care."
This is one of the few games I've played where I sometimes enjoy failing more than succeeding. It allows the planner in me a chance to engineer a cinematic solution.
By way of example, there was a mission where I had to accost someone escaping via helicopter. The first time I undertook this, I was on foot, and he got away, failing the mission.
I fixed this the next time around by speeding towards the helipad on the roof of a truck, and making a daring grapple off the truck to the chopper, moments before it crashed into a building and exploded. This was enjoyable.

That was the point there -- that the team did the opposite of everything the hypothetical realism guy brought up.

It was hard!
That's why I usually hitch a ride to one of the earlier military bases and grab that chopper with rockets and the minigun.

Wasn't until about 8 hours in that I realised that, I just sat there for a minute going "Wait... hold on... He's not even...
...
Anyway, blowing stuff up"
Oh my god.
that was one of the first things I noticed
and didn't care about one jot.
the best thing is when you lose a dogfight
parachute out, grapple onto the victor, and award them their hard-won punchtotheface trophy.
they can make the acceptance speech on the way down, and they'll have plenty of time to do so
