Need to open docx. without MS Word

EliteLamerEliteLamer __BANNED USERS regular
So far none of my professors have saved anything in this format and I have had no problem using open office; however, my current professor used it. I really need to open this file or I am screwed.

Arg I should have not waited until the last day to write a 3000 word paper :(

You can use MS's own viewer to open the file (no editing though) but you can then copy to another file.

I'm assuming you're running windows, if not then I've no idea I'm afraid

You could also upload it to Google Docs and view it there, though some of the formatting will be lost.

Open it with your favourite zip file manager and pull out the file that actually contains the text.

I also seem to recall OpenOffice being able to open those, but I don't know for sure.

I do have open office and it does not seem to open them without using an add on from my understanding..

Thanks, I am going to try the MS reader.

Having recently done some Word ML programming, I know that docx is based on the Open XML format, so there are probably a few programs you could use to open it.

If you're REALLY desperate, you could open it as an XML file (which is basically what it is) with a decent XML reader. After wading through the header information, the text would be pretty obvious if not formatted nicely.

Yeah, looks like the latest version of OpenOffice can open docx just fine, so I'd go that route.

    Import into docs.google.com ?

Else you could mail/pm it to me and I'll save it as a regular .doc for you.

Also, totally forgot this: the Office 2010 Beta programme is open now, so you could get into your file that way too.

He could just download the trial of MS office 2007 and resave to another format.

Also, Go-OO has the best non-MS docx support. (essentially it's a better version of open office)

The office trial should allow you to open the file just fine, as should go-oo.

I don't know for sure if the latest version of OO Writer can open them, but I opened an xslx file with OO Calc just fine today, so you might try updating your software.

I know OO wouldn't automatically open the docx

And that has what to do with it being able to read the file format? Select {File|Open...} or hit [Ctrl]+[O] and find the file you want to open then click on Open and see what happens...

If you still haven't gotten it open, I'm with Alegis in that I'll convert it for you if you PM me a link to it.

I got the file open using the converter but when I tried to just do file open it wouldn't open the file.

Are you on the latest version of OO.O? I have 3.2 which already associated itself with .docx (since I don't have Office installed) and was able to open them without running the converter. I remember using the converter a year or so ago to open a docx for my wife and it was pretty buggy.

AbiWord is free and open source and it should be able to handle .docx just fine.

MS needs to get that free version of Word out as quick as possible. Google Docs is no better than Word Pad and OO has other issues. AbiWord is lightweight but at least it can function as a full text editor with all the needed basic functions.

Yes MS will "soon" be releasing a hosted web version of Office as well as a scaled down free version of Word to install on your PC.
