Is there any free software to play my HD DVDs?

I would have assumed any HD-DVD drive must come with basic playback software, right? Maybe not...

Unfortunately, I think your out of luck. Looks like many others have tried, and even the $$ software doesn't always work:

You may have to resort to other 'methods' and play via VLC/media player of choice.

Do those methods invole me poping the disc in or me having to rip the damn disc?

I tried this sort of thing a while ago. Most software fucks up the playback somehow.

I then tried to rip and encode the few HDDVD movies I own so I could at least watch the damn things. This turned into such an ordeal I ended up saying 'fuck it' and bought them on bluray.

I would suggest emailing HD Nation. Their one host Robert Heron has shown playing back HD-DVDs on a PC.

MakeMKV works for Bluray I am pretty sure it also works for HD DVD.

It streams to such things as VLC

So you would open makemvk turn on streaming then open VLC and point it towards that

Oh and it has a mac port - so BLU RAY ON MAC

You might just have to buy an Xbox 360 to play your HD-DVDs. :(

Interestingly enough I have a friend who spends more money then I could justify spending on laser discs. His collection is actually pretty impressive (Tron, Hook, basically all the big films that you could get on LD).

But yeah HDDVD is dead; see if the manufacturers have a trade in program for rebates on blu ray copies.
