I think it's actually made by the same team which is why it keeps getting brought up, but I could be totally wrong about that.

Practicing a little Thread Necromancy to bring this baby back to the light of day. Game's coming out next month, are people just not excited about it at all, or what?

Now that the thread has been revived I need to bring the OP up to date 2morrow. Too tired now.

Lol, I was thinking of doing the same thing! I'm holding my breath on this one. Everything I've seen makes this game look like it could go in either direction. It's one of those very very very rare cases I cannot even begin to predict if it will be good or bad. I'm pre-ordering based solely on the fact I like the devs making it... plus I want that sweet sweet dwarf pre-order armor dammit!

One thing I've always disliked about middle earth games is the lack of crazy look armor and weapons. Visually Lotr games ARE and SHOULD be grounded in reality. No crazy WoW like armor or weapons hear folks. While I like the whole over the top armor and weapons type deal, I'm sure there are many who feel the opposite way. Although in a game where collecting phat loot is one of the BIGGEST elements, this may be an issue.

I can't be bothered making a new thread for this, but there's a video of Not-Gimli smashing the balls off some things with a hammer. The animation looks really good, and I would quite like to see the other characters in action.

edit: turns out, there are other videos. Hooray!

Played this at eurogamer and unfortunately I can't really put my finger on why it didn't feel good to play. It's possible that the characters had too much weight, which is a weird complaint for me as lots of beat em ups feel too floaty. Hopefully the convention demo shows up before release so I can have a proper go again before I consider purchasing.

Interesting.. I liked the hefty look from the videos. Was really hoping things wouldn't be too light and flimsy. I want to thwack guys with my hammer, and know they've felt it.

So the talk of brutal hobbit rape and sex with hairy dwarven women was just sensationalism, huh?

Just saw this on Electronic Playground. Looks good. Why no love for it here with it being released in a week?

One thing I noted was how they bragged about it having an instanced loot system so there are no loot whores in multiplayer. Ummm I think all games do this now. Hell it's so common place these days that I'm looking forward to the next game that actually allows me to get my ninja loot on.

Dungeon Defenders. FFA looting with no options!

I am a big fan of Coop games and this looks good from what I've seen. What kind of character customization is there?

These could be amusing. Their description on steam was entirely unhelpful; made them sound extremely generic. Maybe they are? Anyway, I really enjoyed that Gamecube LOTR RPG that came out a while back... it was basically an FF clone, and the story was absurd, but it was fun to play. I'll grab this for $10 somewhere.

I bought this on a whim on steam. Hopefully I'm not the only one so I'll get to do some coop.

Wow another Lotr game where I can only play as the Good Guys.

Hey, you could play the bad guys in the last LOTR game!
Sadly the game itself wasn't that great. It could have been amazing but noooooo.

Yeah, I just saw this pop up on Steam. I'm typically a LOTR whore, I had no idea it was coming out so soon. But with Batman:AC, Uncharted 3 and Skyrim for the PC coming out, not sure when I'll get around to picking this up.

Not exactly. The Lead Designers of both Dark Alliance and Champions aren't working at Snowblind anymore (AFAIK) since ca. 2009 and they took a few outside help when developing those games back in the day. for Example Chris Avellone of both Black Isle and Obsidian was a designer on both DA and Champions 1.

    add me for co-op.

my friend is buying this on the 360, so we'll be playing co-op on that when he comes over, but I'll also have my own copy on PC so I will need co-op people there.

I am lucky enough to have access to a USA IP address (the UK release was pushed back for some reason?) so was able to play this today. I have only played the singleplayer but so far I am very impressed. The UI feels a little cheap, but the gameplay, voice acting and mechanics are solid enough. The scope of the game also surprised me.

Pretty positive impressions so far around the net. Just to support Snowblind and get them back to making Action-Rpgs en mass its going to be day1 buy. Just finished another DSIII playthrough though so I will work on my backlog first before getting into War in the North.

Was probably the best year for hack n' slashers/Action-Rpgs on consoles since the 90s (Which isn't saying much, but still)

this is on my list to buy early next year for about $30. it looks solid, but theres too much top tier competition at the moment. i do love loot though, and co-op.

  • spamfilterspamfilter Registered User regular
I was trying to decide between this and dungeon siege 3, I think I'll go with this one, because of the superior co-op functions.

Forgot to say that you can demo 30 minutes of the game just by using OnLive, which is great as they haven't released a demo for it.

    Nobody is playing this game?

It's a pretty good hack-and-slash loot game. They did an excellent job on the Middle Earth lore as well. I know it's getting overlooked but people are missing out on a pretty good game, especially since it has split screen co-op which is rare these days.

Had it reserved but the large amount of games coming out that I needed versus my love for this just bashed it down. The others were more important. I do however plan on picking it up around 30-40 dollars. Hopefully Black Friday deals.

I'll be grabbing it for 360 later this month, for some reason it's delayed in the UK.

I've been enjoying it a fair bit. Combat could have really used a little extra to it. I mean, combat has some great moments, but they needed to add in some combos or something.
Basically there's just light attack, heavy attack. Most combat consists of just doing light until you get the finishing move icon (where you then press heavy). A good time but a bit more complexity would have been good.

  • DracilDracil Registered User regular
Well you can unlock the different skills too to add variation. And there's the ranged attacks too, including charge-up shots and rapid fire or multishots.

Yeah, and those are nice and all, but you can't (or I can't with my dwarf at least) use them all that often. Just a few combos or something with regular attacks would have been nice. At least there's the swift double attack you can do out of a roll, I guess =)

  • WillisIVIIXWillisIVIIX Registered User regular
Yea I have to agree, a little more time spent on the combat and skills would have made for an overall better experience. The presentation is top notch and it shows polish. But hitting X until an arrow appears then hitting Y gets stale, and fast. Skills feel like they aren't deep enough, much like Borderlands, I expected a little more since Snowblind did a pretty good job on skills in the second Norrath game. They could have borrowed a little from Return of the King, that would have improved combat a great deal.

Maybe that's just the Dwarf though, I'm probably going to restart as the other two and see if they grip me better. Overall it's a solid game and worth a pick up, although it's going to get buried by all the other big hitters coming out this month. Which is really unfortunate. Feels good to get back into the movie's style of Middle Earth.

The Elf is really a lot of fun to play.

My friend bought a copy on the 360 and brought it over, we've nearly finished it. The game is actually quite long. This definitely isn't a game I'd play single player but couch co-oping is a lot of fun with a good friend.
