S.H.I.E.L.D.: "This is not how the world ends."

The secret history of the Marvel universe begins here!

Taking place primarily in the 1950's Jonathan Hickman, and Dustin Weaver's new series shows us the true history of the super secret organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D.! Now a new threat has arisen, and a young man named Leonid has been recruited by the organization to "stand in the gap."

This is, without a doubt, the best first issue of a new series I have read, perhaps ever! Epic in scale, and deep in backstory, with just enough cameos to make it interesting!

SPOILERS AHEAD! DO NOT GO FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT!

S.H.I.E.L.D. is actually an ancient brotherhood of men, created in anceint Egypt by Imhotep, after he lead an army of warriors (including Apocalypse, and the god of the Moon Knight) to fight back and defeat an invading army of Brood. He used to artifacts that are now sacred, a spear (held in the East) and a Shield (held in the West).

S.H.I.E.L.D. has existed every since then to protect the world, and included such great figures as Gallileo, and Leonardo da Vinci among its ranks.. Over the years they have beat back the Celestials and Galactus, and (perhaps most importantly) used a strange orb artifact to help deal with an unknown threat lurking in the sun.

What are you guys thoughts on this series sofar?

I thought Secret Warriors established that SHIELD was created by HYDRA in order to knock off the competition. It's kind of the basis for the whole SW series.

True, but the guy behind SW is also writing this one so I'm sure he hasn't forgotten that.

That would make a lot of sense. There have actually been references to that, not least Hiemdall's "he comes, fuelled with the black hate of a million suns..." (Which is a truly awesome line).

And yes, I bought SHIELD, and it is indeed very good.

so i was incredibly confused by this first issue

like the parts about the founding of Shield were fine and dandy but then there's this Night Machine cat and all of the sudden Tony Stark and Reed Richard's fathers are attacking a base and oh man what the fuck was happening?

    was i missing something?

I'm sure Hickman will explain everything later. Most of the reviews for this issue have been outstandingly positive, but one complaint leveled at it is that it feels more like a issue #0 than an issue #1.

"Unknown shadow organizations" are a Hickman staple (this isn't a criticism). Complaining that everything isn't explained in the first issue is kind of lame.

We should make a list of all the Marvel characters that were around in pre-modern times. I'll start.

    Apocalypse
    The Void
    Kang the Conqueror
    The Eternals
    The Inhumans
Hercules, Ares, and all the Olympian gods
    Thor and his gang
In fact, let's just say all the mythology-based characters
The Ancient one and other Doctor Strange villains and allies
The Immortal Weapons, including all of the Iron Fists
MI:13 characters and their various mythologies, like Captain Britain and Arthurian legend
The Watcher and other cosmic characters
Atlantis was active on the ocean floor
    Christianity-based characters, like Mephisto
    Mister Sinister
Ulysses Bloodstone, father to Elsa Bloodstone
Conan the Barbarian, Red Sonja, and all those characters
Two-Gun Kid, Rawhide Kid, and other western characters

How many of those were in SHIELD, I wonder.

I hope not. I don't like getting other Marvel characters in my Conan stories. Though there was a Red Sonja meets Spider-Man story not long ago so...

Hmmm, just finished #2... So anyone think that
agent richards will become kang thanks to his heroics?
I looked real hard for the costume in any of his incarnations shown in the issue and couldnt see a likeness. And even early on its starting to look like its may tie up with some of the reveals in Secret Warriors.

Well, both are written by Hickman so I wouldn't be surprised.

Also, based on what wiki says about the preexisting character in your spoiler, I would guess so. I didn't even know that was his real name.

I didnt mind the scripted page, thought it was better than an incredibly dialogue-heavy page where speech bubbles blot out all the good art. Plus i thought it added a little more style, a certain jua de vive.

They had twice the dialogue in the next page in bubbles anyway tho. It just killed the flow for me mostly, because it didn't feel intentional ( even a slightly more graphic font and a better gradient even would have fit, heh, but it kinda felt like an " oh crap we forgot this page!" afterthought)

Either way they have me hooked on wtf everything is going tho

I've gotten issues 2 and 3 recently, and I love how the quality of this series is keeping going. Sure it's just the first 3 issues, but this is a concept that could fall apart so easily! So far this gets my vote for best new series of the year. If Marvel really does cancel Nova and Guardians after TI is over, this will be the only thing really keeping me going to my comic shops.
