Setting up remote desktop on Win 7

Bionic MonkeyBionic Monkey Registered User, ClubPA regular
I want to set up my desktop and laptop so that when I'm away from home, I can still interact with my desktop at home, manage downloads, etcetera.

I'm running Home Premium on both computers, so unfortunately the built in Windows Remote Desktop Protocol won't work.

This is something I have zero experience in, so I'm pretty much flying blind. What are some good, free programs that will do this for me? How much information about my computers will I need, and what kind of setup would I need to do with my network? What kind of limitations would a setup like this have?

I would suggest taking a look at LogMeIn from LogMeIn.com

It's dead easy to set up, free and very easy to use.

Basically, you sign up for a LogMeIn Account, install the agent on the machine you wish to connect to, log on to logmein.com from the machine you want to use as a client, select connect to computer and remote control. It will install a browser plug in and then act just like RDP.

It handles all the information you need to know about your computer because the agent forwards all the information about the computer to the logmein servers, so you don't need to worry about ports and IPs and that sort of stuff.

It's a little bit less efficient than RDP and VPNs in terms of bandwidth, but it is pretty useable and as I said, easy.

There are a few other solutions that are similar, I believe, mesh or freenx (the latter is more like RDC/RDP though).

There's also UltraVNC... It says it supports Win7 but I haven't been able to get it to work. Mostly because I am able to do remote desktop (Win7 Ultimate) :/ Whatever you use, depending on your bandwidth, it'd be good to have something you can adjust color depth/compression, to get the most out of your connection.

VNC of some kind is an option of sorts. But, it's not an ideal option. Not sure about the security of VNC though, traditionally you forward VNCs over SSH connections or other encrypted VPNs. I don't know enough about modern VNC or specific implementations these days to say whether it'd be secure or not. Could do some reading.

First of all unless you have a Static public ip in your home you can't do this, as RDP will rely on said IP.
If you have a dynamic ip (like in most cases) then your public ip will change often enough you wont be able to keep up with it even if you did set up RDP.
(you can call your internet provider to verify this)

Using something like LogMeIn.com works around this issue so I agree with Apothe0sis.

Or, you know, use dyndns.org or any other dynamic IP address DNS service.

Right, what I said only applies to anyone not using any type of outside dns hosting services.

Yeah, I really like logmein. Worked great as a free option for remote access from my laptop when I realized remote desktop was a no go for xp home. I liked it enough to buy logmein ignition for my iPhone, in fact, which works really well too... Though it's a bit pricey.
