Recently, I was in a H-HOL run where the tank DC'd as soon as he zoned in. We couldn't kick him at first, and pretty much everybody including me was undergeared (read: slightly overgeared actually but not ridiculously so like the norm). So, we proceeded to clear to the first boss without a tank. It was a lot of fun - every pull was hectic, hexing the mob going straight for the healer, stunlocking a mob, Tricksing another onto the Hunter while he kited, cloaking out of welding beams to stay mobile... it didn't last long before the tank was kickable, but it felt like the perfect balance between TBC and WOTLK heroic difficulty.
Strangely enough, despite the skill this group displayed at clearing pulls without a tank, as soon as we got one the healer turned his brain off and let people die from incidental AOE constantly. The DPS proceeded to do similarly dumb stuff like run around in welding beams and stand in the slags as they blew up. (I stood in them too, but then I had cloak).
There are certain points as a caster where even taking upgrades every time leaves you swimming in hit. Just gotta be aware and look for hit-less alternatives.
I must be just really fuxxed then because I really am in dire need of hit. I'm kind of at the cap right now, but I want to get enough hit to get rid of the Triumph badge hit trinket so that I can throw an Abyssal Rune next to my Reign of the Dead.
I have a shadowpriest in my guild with 21% Hit-rating before talents, we're trying to teach him that having that much isn't making his spells 'hit harder'.
It's better/worse than that, he thought his DOT ticks were missing.
Had a Warlock in Monastery Graveyard who would Hellfire every pull, and repeatedly ask for damage meters. As the healer, I felt like telling him that I thought the damage should count towards my total, as while all he did was press a button, I had to keep throwing heals on him to ensure he didn't die. I didn't mind the concept in principle as I had spare mana to throw around, but two things made it worse:
1) He only had 870 health, so he could literally kill himself in less than 10 seconds.
2) He somehow managed to be terrible at it. He would keep Hellfiring even when there were only 1 or 2 mobs left in the pack, sometimes forgetting to cancel it until 5 seconds after everything was dead (in which time he would have surely died had I not healed him).
He did die at one point. The Pally tank had run out of mana and couldn't keep aggro on the entire pack. He went down like a ton of bricks.

So can someone help me understand the language of the way they're having haste work on channeled spells in Cataclysm?
Is it that if you channel Arcane Missiles (5 seconds) instead of 1 pulse every second you get 1 pulse every, say, .75 seconds, but you still channel for 5 seconds so you're getting more hits in on a single casting?
If you have 25% haste, you will get 25% more ticks in a single channeling.
Let's say you have a four second channel that ticks for 100 damage every second at 0% haste - a total of four ticks. At 25% haste, your channel time would remain the same (four seconds), but you would have a tick every 0.8 seconds, for a total of five ticks (25% more ticks).
The way it works would be that, as you gain haste, the spell gets quicker to cast until a certain breakpoint. Then, after that point, the duration of the cast resumes back to the full duration of the unhasted spell, but with an additional tick within the spell.
So, like, with a 3s channel with 3 ticks... as you gain haste it'd eventually drop down towards being a 2s cast, but sometime before you get to that point, it'd become a 3s channel again with 4 ticks. From then, it'd reduce and eventually reset back to 3s with 5 ticks.
Essentially making it like the way dots will tick faster, but without the problem of haste before breakpoints not enabling you to do greater amounts of damage.

Damn I can't wait to see how arcane missiles plays out, since it's becoming a proc-like casting.
I can pretty easily imagine that they try to position it, as arcane, so that you still want to use regular procs of it, then either have MB be additional procs or just apply ridiculous amounts of haste to some of the procs. Instead of being a 1.3s whirlwind of 5 missiles, it's a 5s whirlwind of 15 missiles!

Okay, so I came home to find an email from Battle.net saying that my password has been changed. A real, legit email, too (not some phishing attempt) because my password's been changed and somebody's added an authenticator to my account.
Help, I've been hacked!
What do I do? The obvious answer is "call billing", which I will do as soon as they're open (I'm in Melbourne). But what then? Those of you who've been unfortunate enough to have your account compromised, did they fix it? How long did it take? What did you have to do?

I didn't have the authenticator issue, but it took less than 24 hours to get the account back under my control, and maybe a few days to get gear/money restored.
So no real info this week? I expected Ruby Sanctum to be on PTR by now. Shit, beta should have started by now since they eliminated the need for a sign-up period.
I'd have unsubbed by now if it wasn't for that damn violet protodrake.

you can email them, as well. I quit wow about a year ago, and then in january, I got an email saying that my account had been suspended. I fired off a quick email to billing and they reset my password, re-opened my account, and de-activated the blizzard authenticator that the hacker had installed. When I logged on, my characters were only wearing tabards and/or non-vendorable gear. But my mailbox was full of restored gear; so that in the end, I don't think I lost anything, it just took a day or two to get everything sorted out. Took slightly longer to get rid of all the titanium ore in my packs; apparently the hacker had used my hunter to farm up crap.

Well, that's comforting. I had a friend watch my characters each log in and run to a level one alt, presumably opening trade. Then they ran to Dalaran and spent all my Frost on primordial saronite. Then they ran to the level one alt again.
What are Blizzard like on the phone? I've never had to call them for any reason, not once in five years.
Well I've figured out how to fix WSG after many attempts at finding a decent game, I've come to the conclusion that nobody knows how to play a simple CTF game. So I've come up with a fix for it.
Take away both flag, take away all objectives, just dump everyone into the middle from the get-go, and let them duke it out for 20min. At the end, everyone just gets the honor from their HKs. This will hopefully keep these assholes who have absolutely no desire to play the objectives of the games, out of the remaining BGs.

There's a problem with this idea, in that unless you choose the "join random BG" option, you won't get into an actual game.
MYself, I think WSG is fine; I've had enjoyable games in there, and I've had horrible games in there. I just let it wash over me, if it turns into the latter.
This is more than I could say for IoC. Maybe they built it up too much in trying to say it would be similar to old AV. If you could annoyed by 7 people zerging in the middle of WSG, then IoC is infinitely worse watching 30 or so people fighting near a wall they can't break down.
Compared to EQ and DAoC, wow was probably on par with them in vanilla I'd think.
The only thing it really had going for it was "Warcraft" and it's been a 10+ year product at that point with a huge following. That momentum really caused WoW to succeed the way it has.

Also, one of the biggest pluses is Blizzard really listened to what their customers want most of their time and try to add it into the game.
How long had DAoC been in the game before they finally let people buy a mount? If there's anything I learned from Zelda is people will do the most mundane of tasks if you make it fun. Fishing and horseback riding.

Vanilla WoW was a helluva lot more forgiving than EQ and more polished than DAoC(pre-expansions...dunno about later on). Blizzard's reputation prolly didn't hurt either. And they were willing to change/fix stuff.

It wasn't at first until people from EQ/DAoC came and said "maybe you guys should stop following that shit, don't punish people for playing."
Exhausted experience was a far more retarded concept than losing exp while dying.

I remember my first night on live playing for hours and then dying for the first time. I sat around for a few minutes debating whether or not I wanted to take the rez and lose the exp or do a corpse run back. I eventually caved, took the rez and was surprised to see that I did not take an exp hit. It was a nice surprise.
I don't really remember the exhausted exp thing. I really liked not having corpse runs tho. That and not losing exp was a refreshing change from EQ.
I almost lost a whole bunch of nice gear on a twink in EQ once because I fell down some hole in the iksar newbie area and the fall was enough to kill me. Getting back down there without dying took a bit of luck. I couldn't go to sleep until I'd gotten my stuff back though.
Things like that would make me not want to play that is for sure. I know there are purists out there that would say that is what makes MMO's what they are, but losing xp and gear after a death isn't for me. More power to the people that can handle it.
Yeah I remember losing equipped items in DAoC. That was horrid. You had to have a second set of gear with you just to get to your tombstone and get your original gear back.

I have some really fond memories of UO and EQ. They were enormously fun at the time but I don't think I could ever play such a game again. I love a challenge but I really don't like losing my stuff.
Didn't they originaly go the Diablo II route where you had to run, naked, back to your body to recover your gear and items etc etc? It was way early on in an Alpha build though.

Honestly, I think too many people beat up on Vanilla WoW. Again, I think the game is significantly better than when it launched, but you also have to consider that the MMORPG genre was still a toddler at the time, and WoW completely reinvented the experience.
Compared to WoW, even at launch, current titles like AC, UO and EQ were total shit.

I wouldn't bother calling them. I got hacked, and I did 3 things: (1) Filled out an in-game ticket stating my problem, (2) Sent an email to [email protected] (think that's the address - might want to double check) with the same information as the ingame ticket, and (3) Attempted to call them. They had my account restored with all my gear back before I made it through the hour-long phone queue. DO let them know that all your characters were affected; DO let them know there's an authenticator on it that now needs to be removed.
You'll also want to scan your computer. I found a few nasty things when I did a deep scan, and it's possible that those caused the account compromise.
