[Let's Discuss] The Dresden Files RPG

i don't know how many people here are fans of the Dresden Files, but i figure some people in the community might have heard about it.

what folks may not know is that while it's being released in June at Origins, Evil Hat has opened up pre-orders for the books. so what?

well, if you pre-order, you get PDFs of the books right then and there. they're nearly complete and they're gorgeous.

if you're not familiar with the game, it uses FATE, which is what powers Spirit of the Century, another wildly popular indie RPG.

anyone else dropped some dough and got a hold of these puppies yet? and if you haven't and call yourself a Dresden fan, why haven't you?

and if you have, thoughts? discussion? gushes? perhaps even... a game? :winky:

I have not done so yet, but I probably will when they become available from a UK stockist. I've heard that the overseas shipping will be punishing.

Evil Hat has said that they've low-balled the weight of the books (and are paying the difference in shipping cost themselves) in order to lighten the costs for overseas buyers, IIRC.

To answer the OP, I haven't bought them because I'm waiting for my FLGS to get on their "approved dealer" list so that I can preorder through my FLGS and get the PDFs now.

I adore the series and would happily play the game but I'm too broke to afford the books.

I'm a big fan of the series. When you say the books are "nearly complete", do you mean "minor proofreading issues" or "sections of the game are missing?"

99% done. the only thing missing (according to Fred Hicks) is a story Jim's writing for the book (which will be in the Dead Tree version) and just very minor editing.

On the other hand, will a PDF-only version be available through DriveThruRPG or similar stores?

to continue the gush: this book is so awesome. they've written it from the perspective of Billy, who's actually making this RPG of the "Dresdenverse", and it's formatted to look like a spiral-bound notebook filled with notes in the margins from Harry himself as well as Bob.

and yeah, to answer your question Sakutian Jim is a pretty big gamer; he approached Evil Hat to do this game and it's been Duke Nukem-ing around for awhile.

I've been looking over the character classes on the website and I'm really pleased with what I've seen so far. I'm especially pleased with Wizards, Knights of the Faerie Courts, Were-Forms, Focused Practitioners. It's nice to see that they didn't just phone it in for this game. I'm enjoying how adaptable to the player this game is.

Also I like that they put in vampires of a couple of courts as playable choices.

A lot of the important characters are vampires so if they hadn't been playable, it would have been... less than optimal.

From what I understand from a limited Google, the "vampire" choices are Red Court Infected and White Court Virgin, not full-on vampires.

    There's a template for a full-fledged White Court Vampire.

In addition, if you REALLY wanted to play a Red or Black, it'd probably be pretty easy to whip up a template for it.

you'd have to ask someone who's been to St. Louis hahah

KC is really interesting, in the center of the city it's pretty rundown, kind of high crime from what i've heard, but there's a lot of really cool older buildings

the suburbs are a real contrast because only like 10 minutes out the areas are really nice
