Halo 2 is the game that started many things. It was the first game to popularize many things like:
Matchmaking
Love it or hate it, Bungie created the first matchmaking experience that actually worked well and cohesively. It has proceeded to draw the ire of dedicated server fanboys even though matchmaking has nothing to do with how the games are hosted. The effect is still felt today - even Apple has now implemented their own matchmaking service.
Party System
Seriously developers, why is this so fucking hard for you to copy? I mean, you can't even copy Halo 2's party system, let alone the Halo 3 enhancements. The fuck is your problem? Get your shit in gear. I'm looking at you, Infinity Ward.
Rich presence
You know that thing on the 360 that tells you exactly what people are doing? Yeah, that started in Halo 2. It may have told you people were playing Lockout with 0-0 score 3 times out of 10, but it was the precursor to 360 functionality that people take for granted.
Halo 2 also started The Bees Knees, the Penny Arcade Forums Halo clan. The name is based off the I Love Bees ARG built to promote Halo 2. Almost six freaking years later we're still around and kicking it.
Halo 2 also has an unfortunate history with the PA forums. One time, Frankie came here and posted on of their updates... and a certain group proceeded to shit all over him for it. As a result, the Penny Arcade Forums are the only community that Bungie interacted with that did NOT get to challenge them to a Humpday. Instead, Tycho and Gabe represented the PA name against Bungie. Let's just say the results were expected, and probably a form of revenge.
We're so very sorry, Frankie. Please forgive us. All those mean people have all left.
Going Down With The Boat
First things first. If you'd wish to participate in the festivities, you will need
(1) Xbox (360 or original)
(1) Copy of Halo 2 Xbox
(1) Active Gold account
Log into to Halo 2, then go to Xbox Live -> Downloadable Content. Then proceed to download all the maps (you will roughly need about 600MB of free space). These downloads are slow, so don't wait until the last moment to grab them.
Then (from inside Halo 2), send a friend request or text message to one of the following gamertags that will be known to be playing Halo 2:

and we will pull you into games.
Writ In Stone
Halo 2 supports Clan List functionality. This is the current clan roster according to Halo 2. At this point, we do not know what Bungie will do with clan lists on Bungie.net. But if you would like to be immortalized in the clan list forever, be sure to join up and play with us on Halo 2 before the 14th. I will find space by booting alts off the list. Slots are limited so first come first serve.
Bonus Pay
The following two bonuses are available:
1. If you have any Halo 2 games recorded on Bungie.net. This will allow you to activate a veterancy emblem for the pregame lobbies in Halo: Reach for that gamertag.
2. Bungie will be playing Halo 2 on the 14th. Play any game (does not have to be against Bungie) on the 14th and you will recieve "a graphical flair for Reach multiplayer". We're thinking a special armor piece.
3. Bungie will also be crunching stats and handing out things based on these stats.
Special note: If you are an old Bee/PAforum member and would really like to get the bonuses but cannot get on Halo 2 for the 14th due to financial or time issues, please send me a PM and we can talk about recovering your account to my Xbox so I can record ya some games on the 14th. Cool? Cool. You can trust me too; I've recovered about half of TBK's gamertags by now and they all got them back.
TL;DR
1. Play Halo 2 on the 14th of April before it goes down.
2. You will get sweet bonuses for the retail release of Halo: Reach.

We don't care if you remember how the maps worked or not. We don't care if you still remember weapon locations. We don't care if you don't know any button glitches (trust me, you'll still run into them). Just show up, play, have fun, and say goodbye to the game that kept OXbox Live afloat.
Halo 2 Forever
While this does mean Halo 2 is going down, Halo 2 PC will remain online for the forseeable future since it uses Games For Windows Live. You'll also be able to play Halo 2 Xbox via system link with XBC...

Re-downloading the maps now. Good lord I am getting super nostalgic here. Some stuff that happened earlier this year isn't helping either.

Because it's a crying shame that there's a good chance we'll never see that map again.
I always got mad because we play so much Terminal. But I don't hate the map; just the rotation.
Relic was also great for one flag and one bomb. Well, until Ninja on Fire removed 1 flag and 1 bomb from Relic in matchmaking. Also the beta gate that Bungie disabled at the last minute but can still be turned on via modding.
Headlong was just great. Feels like a Halo 3 map with all the multiple paths and design. Shame it wasn't chosen for a remake.

But then again, MS didn't let Bungie handle the port at all, so maybe Bungie isn't even allowed to pull data off it (H2V games are not reported to Bungie.net for stats)
