New York Times has searchable PDF archives going back to 1851

    http://query.nytimes.com/search/query?srchst=p#top

You'll get a text blurb an an option to buy a PDF:

Those aren't actual scans, though, just transcriptions of the articles (unless the actual PDF is different from the preview.)

OP, you're probably going to have to go to an actual library and see if they have microfilm of the era you're looking for. Luckily you want new york based papers, because lots of places will have the NYT. If you want tabloids or local/small circulation papers, you'd probably either have to go to a library in new york or a really good university/research library.

Note that the NYT's layout hasn't actually changed that much.

If you can't afford the PDFs, local libraries might have it. This might be a good place to start.
