Oh Stephen you're such the white knight, what will we do without you!
If you're against women being chainsawed in half then you should be against men being chainsawed in half too. Gears was never particularly tasteful, the conclusion to the Maria story cemented that but at least now women can have a female avatar, that for me made me helped me to enjoy Fable 2 more than the original. Regarding the single player maybe Cliffy will surprise us and have Anya be a really interesting strong character with realistic proportions. I am not holding my breath of course, chances are she will need to be rescued by Marcus and be a corny love interest or some other cliche *vomits*.
That for me is a far bigger concern.
Realistic proportions went out the window with the first game, Marcus could crush his own skull in with his bare hands. Not to mention his shoulder muscles are bigger than his head.
I was about to say, have you seen the guys in this game? Holy fuck, Anya could have any sort of cliched body shape, and she'd still look more believable than Cole and Dom.

I remember getting the first Gears for Christmas and my family wanted to watch me play it. The whole "chainsaw bayonet" thing didn't go over very well.

I honestly have to wonder if the writer they've hired can salvage the relative mess that the story is at this point. If she can while still keeping the utterly bananas and over the top feeling of the second game, that will be a true achievement.

I've only read the first novel, but given that she's continuing the story I think she'll do ok.
What I wonder is if there's going to be more references to outside material, which is something that always bugs me.
Things that start off in one medium (Video games, movies, TV shows, and books usually) that spread to others, usually do not acknowledge the contributions from other sources even if they are "canon" and generally have approval of the fanbase. I actually would like to see the game reference the books/comics events. It would help make it feel like a whole complete world.

The main character from the first comic storyline got a line in Gears 2. (Jayce, IIRC.)
But yeah, I totally agree with you on this. Like in the first book, which has the present day stuff take place a week after Gears1, has the Marcus and Co discovering that one of the cities has been sunk.
Fast forward to a month after Gears1 when the first comic arc takes place and Delta Team is actually IN the second city when it gets sunk. (Granted they were there because of unusual seismic activity.). At no point do they mention how this is similar to what happened at the first city.
Fast forward again to Gear2, which takes place 6 months after Gears1, and again, Delta Team discovers a third sunk city, and they don't act like they've see it before.
This also applies to characters like Bernie Mataki, who is pretty much winds up being the fifth delta team member in the first book (though it's implied to be temporary). She then get's NO mention in Gears2, and then in the second book (which picks up directly where Gears2 left off) literally they all of a sudden remember and care about the character again, and realize they should probably see if she made it out okay.
It's quite silly, to be honest. Like you say, I hope the fact that Karen is writing the story means other characters will get mentioned, or even featured. Hell, it would save them time coming up with new female characters if they just added Bernie from the books and Alex from the comics.

Yeah it was over the top, and it left out a lot of the book canon, but it beat the Gears 1 story of "Blow the living fuck out of the Loucst", and it at least left enough loose threads to keep the story of Gears 3 intriguing.

"Loose" is a generous term for the story in Gears of War 2. Of course it wasn't really the point of the game but some more coherency would have been nice.

Definitely. Guess they just wanted to try and generate some hype for the next game by leaving a lot of story elements open to interpretation.

I just want to know if there is going to be another Carmine brother for the third installment. I hope they keep the tradition of killing the unfortunate brothers in the trilogy.

There are 4 carmine brothers
the 3rd one (Clay I think?) is referenced by a collectible in Gears 2
Saving private ryan anyone?

I just didn't like how it jumped so far ahead in the war. "We dealt a severe blow to the locust horde, but the battle isn't over yet..."

They were always done to one city. Jacinto was the last surviving human city after the COG used the Dawn network to annihilate Cera's surface. The remaining cities either turned into Stranded settlements, or just remained abandoned.
EDIT: And I really hope the next Carmine in the series turns out to be a complete badass, that murders the shit out of the Locust and ends up saving Dom and Marcus at some point.
Man, I hate this part. It get announced and I drool over every tiny bit of info and pic I can get my hands on.
I love the Gears series, the just kind of dark, moody crazy shit it has going, going to be as hyped for this as I was for ME2.
Also, I saw someone point out that there were groups pissed when ID released the first female model in a Quake series. Wasn't that player model called the Crack Whore though? If I remember right the first Quake 2 female model that came out, that they released, was the crack whore and it was this dominatrix-ie looking chick that sounded like a slut with every sound she made.
My memories a little fuzzy, and I might be wrong, but seems kinda funny to leave that out as part of the reason people got pissed off about it back then lol.

I enjoyed Gears of War 2 so much. I liked one, but it was frustrating as balls at parts. I never felt Frustrated during GoW2. Really looking forward to this. And I LOVE that trailer. As good as the one with hte guy jumping through the window and seeing the eyes glow in the dark. That made me want to get a 360.

No, the crakwhor model came out much later (and in fact isn't officially part of the game; you have to download it seperately from the patches) the model that came with the game was a female marine.

"What if a woman just didn't want to make babies, and wanted to serve humanity in another way? Can the developers really not imagine a scenario where a woman wouldn't want to to choose this path? According to this premise, the only reason why a woman would want to fight off an endless Locust Horde destroying her planet would be if she had absolutely no other way to spend her time."

oh, kotaku
Considering the comic literally has rape-farms, I'm pretty sure it's intentional misogyny on the part of the leaders of the COG in the story.

WE HAVE TO SINK THE LAST HAVEN OF HUMANITY!!!
is that a good idea?
WHAT POSSIBLE REPERCUSSIONS COULD IT HAVE!?
I was about to say, have you seen the guys in this game? Holy fuck, Anya could have any sort of cliched body shape, and she'd still look more believable than Cole and Dom.
Let's ride the Brumak!
*cue Godzilla/Jurassic Park movie fight*
I really want to play GoW2 again now.
Look.... Reavers, we can totally fly those right guys?!
Sure. And once we've done that, we'll blow up the mutated lambent brumak, which apparently can explode with the power of a small nuclear bomb.
My favorite bit from Gears2 is when they get on the Reavers, and Baird finally wears his damn goggles properly
five dollars the lambent get mutated into a fourth faction, the SUPER-LAMBENT
Nice. Now let us rap about our manly antics!
WOOOOOO! That's my kinda shit!
Technically he didn't do that in the sequel. Which was disappointing.
Cole Calls out the Locust Queen
You better believe he's a smooth ride.

Edit: I would endorse that spin-off on one condition: it ended horribly for everyone.
There's also a Madison Carmine mentioned, but I'm guessing that's the father of the Carmines.

maybe that's how the Queen rose to power
The COG thinks they tie down the Berserkers and rape them, which they find unsettling. Which is ironic considering the aforementioned rape farms.
