Marcus Fenix - Sculpt

edited February 2007 in Artist's Corner
Decided to sculpt Fenix using castilene. Still much to do building up, detialing, and tweaking-wise, but coming along. I want to add arms and maybe even sculpt the gun...we will see.:^:

(I still have to finish up that TP LINK sculpt I was working on as well...all in time I guess):P

Looks pretty good. And now I know what the Gears of War guy is named.

    This is really good.

I'm not really sure I understand the sudden flurry of Gears of War art. I guess I should probably play the game.

That's a great one! I remember a time, when I had a sculpture lessons in the art school and I had ALWAYS a lowest grade in the whole class. Because I was sculpting things like monsters etc. Yea, kind of geek

That looks ridiculously good, at least to my first class of sculpting eyes.

Are you attaching the head just by scoring both sides? What tools did you primarily use for detailing?

I don't understand either, quite frankly. The game is good, but I don't understand the sudden urge among the AC to do Gears of War fanart.

Even though I don't understand this new phenomenon towards Epic's game, the artworks have been decent and great so far. This sculpture looks like it's off to a great start, and I can't wait to see what you'll do with it. :^:

I find it quite derivative the art direction of the game, too many deja-vus, Metroid Prime, Resistance and Half-Life 2 have had better art direction.

But the statue above? Hot damn, great looking, reminds me of the quality of Todd McFarlane´s sculptors.

Hey thanks guys. The head will be removable in case the thing gets picked up somehow for casting. (It'll have a little peg and hole type deal for placement)
I use normal sculpting tools like these along with some wooden ones that are wider...

I'll be working on this more this week...I'll post updates if you like.
Thanks again for the feedback. :^:

I have that exact same set of sculpting tools!! I ordered them from the Monster Makers catalog like four years ago. Very, very handy.

Nice job over all, but I do have a couple of suggestions. I'm not really feeling his cap/hat/thing (The actual name escapes me at the moment). Right now it looks more like a bandanna. I think it would help if you added a couple less intense folds towards the top. Not a lot, just a little so that it comes across more. Also the nose is a little off. The bridge looks too thick and squished. His nose is supposed to have more of a trumpet/thin bell shape, like this...

Now I kinda want to get back into sculpting again. It's been a loooong time...

Thanks for crits Buckwolfe, I always appreciate the feedback, and crits. However, I'm pretty sure those images you posted are from when they were making the game, and not the final appearance for Marcus.

This is in-game Marcus, how he looks now...
    MF_REF_WEB.jpg

    MF_REF_WEB_2.jpg

They beefed his appearance up, and made his face more bulgy and his nose the same. (Guess they thought he needed to look more war-torn)
Also, he doesn't wear a hat...it is in fact a bandana. I can totally understand why you'd think that though, I had to check myself when I was finding references.

Oh, I know that its not actually a hat. It's sort of like one of those felt or woolly winter caps, only much thinner and not made of wool. Kinda like a do-rag (sp?) but it doesn't tie in the back (at least I think).

I get where you're coming from on the nose thing now. What with it being a third person game and all, we don't get to see too much of his front side so I suppose I never really noticed the difference. Only time we really get to see his face is during the cinematics, but its been well over a month and a half since I've seen those.

...Such a good game. Too short though.

    Bit of an update...

Oh, and he definitely has a bandana on that ties at the back.

Still a long way to go, but coming along I think. I've been tinkering with my Link sculpture as well...

    Sword looks a bit bent.

    Other than that, <3

You know what? The sword is totally bent. I've straightened it so many times it hurts. What I think I'll do is buy some stiff sheets of styrene or balsa wood and carve the sword out of that. Would stay much more rigid that way. Good eye.:)

Hot damn. This is really good. I agree with Buckwolfe on the cap and the nose, though.

I remember seeing that Link sculpture awhile back. Awesome to see new work from ya. :)

Aw, looks like I was mistaken then. Oh well.

Its all coming along very nicely. The first thing I noticed was Link's bent sword, but it looks like that's already been covered. You mind posting some other pics of Link from other angles? The reason I ask, apart from wanting to see the details on the back, is that his torso is looking very small right now, but it may just be the angle.

Hot damn, I want that Link sculpture!

It would have been cool if you had taken a picture from the process of creating that particular sculpting, like from beginning (skeleton and all) to that.

This thread makes me want to sculpt (never did that, though), and it's always a good thing when artistic thread inspire to do things. Kudos to you, good sir! :^: :)

Thabnks guys, and The One 52...give it a go man...seriously...you don't know what you can do until you try. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Yeah, it's the angle on Link, and the way I have his leg up...try posing that way yourself...you'll see. I'll take photos of the back when I do more work to it...so far there's not much to see back there.

Here is a few new photos for ya to look at...starting the gun...gonna try to do it all in castilene, but most likely will get some piping and stuff for parts of it.
Marcus himself is coming a long...I THINK I have the shapes and everything right now...so next will be the detailing...THE HARDEST PART.:P

Gotta fix that shoulder armor a bit more too...oh well...onward I go...
