usb reciever into wireless access point?

I just moved recently, and the place i'm staying at uses wireless internet. I was given a netgear wireless reciever today, but when I try to set it up on my computer it asks me to plug the usb reciever into the wireless access point, then back into my computer. The problem is that the modem that gives off the wireless has no usb port! Is there a way I can get around this?
