The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
Excellent, but short. If you can get it on the cheap, buy it. I've been meaning to play through again with the help of gamefaqs to get the good ending. I think I missed one of D's memories.
I'm not going to try a story synopsis because I haven't played in a while, but it's a satisfyingly deep story, and shouldn't be discussed without spoiler tags.
EDIT: also, wood block puzzle + picture frame puzzle = best use of DS ever.
It's fun. It's also apparently very short. I still haven't beaten it but I only played it for about three hours and it felt like I was near the end. The "use the stylus" sections are clever and enjoyable, though they've been eclipsed by more recent games. I paid full price for this game and I wish I hadn't, but if you can get it cheaply I'd recommend it.
I will echo the sentiments of those who have already responded and say that if you can get it cheap, it's worth it. It's short (5 or 6 hours), and a lot of reading, but I found it enjoyable. I agree with the comparison to Myst.
A lot of the puzzles are very clever, and use the DS itself to its full potential.
Pictures does not a good OP make, as evidenced above.
Anywho...I LOVED Another Code. It's quite simple, but the whole style, characters, and story pulled me in, like how a good movie or novel should.
It IS short, and because it's a straight-forward adventure game, there's little to no replay value. There ARE two endings though.
I quite liked the puzzles and how they're handled. If I wasn't aware of all the DS's features I would've probably been stuck in a few spots. They're not too frustrating if you're an adventure newbie.
You could probably pick this up for $10 at Toys R Us or something; it's good for its bargain bin price.
I just bought it this weekend for $10. I don't even think when I see a game for that price anymore for the DS. I haven't even put it in the DS yet and probably won't for a few weeks (tomorrow is Phoenix Wright day).
Different opinions for different folks I guess. The Myst series was ground breaking. Trace Memory is passable. It really feels very gimmicky to me.
It was also SUPER short. And only qualifies as being short by inserting those annoying 'lets recap what we just did 5 minutes ago' quizes. Yes, each chapter takes about 4-5 minutes to complete and then they make you answer questions about what you just did. Dumb questions too, like "what was in the suitcase? A: a note B:a ball C: a shoe nothing". I could understand it maybe if they recapped the storyline for people who are picking it up and putting it down a lot, but the questions were just baffling.
If you can get it for under $10, I would say it was justified. I paid $15 for mine and feel a little ripped off even at that. I finished the game in about 2 hours, and I got stuck a few times. Probably half that time was scrolling through text wishing it would go faster. I have more than a third grade reading comprehension ability.
The story was pretty decent though. It would have been better if they ddin't insult me by constantly repeating themselves though. On a portable platform being played for minutes at a time in cars/subways that is understandable, just annoying when sitting in your living room.
Another Code: Two Memories is pretty good and, yes, it is pretty short. But Ashley saves a lot, in my opinion. I think she's quite likeable and a pretty good character for someone who gets so little time to develop.
Oh - so it's a game I might actually finish? That sounds pretty nice actually. Even if it's only 2 hrs, I'd feel like I got my money's worth if it's a good experience.
Don't even bother paying actual money for it if you can rent it somewhere (like, if you have a Gamefly account). I hear you can beat it in an afternoon.
I have this game and it's pretty cool. It has a full Japanese parser where youhave to write out you responses to converstaions. The plot goes like this.
It starts compleatly dark and then a girl appears and asks "Who are you?" You anser questions like your name, and what job you have and what your hobbies are. Then the girl wakes up and she's in a hospital.
You watch through her eyes as the docter comes in, her mom, and her friends. Then that night a little icon appears and you can talk to her.
You: "Hi, How are you doing?"
Hitomi "AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!"
For the first part of the game she tries to ignore you, and you keep trying to talk to her. It's a really intresting way to play an adventure game.
I bought this the other day for 20 bucks, and i'm not regretting it yet, i'm only about 2 hours in. I would have to say that Myst is definitely far superior though, but that's just me. I love the whole myst series.
I have a question though, is it just me or are the actual physical manipulation puzzles really wonky? As in, very unresponsive. It could easily be my 2 year old ds phat finally starting to give out, but i'm not sure. The cursor still moves around with the stylus, but the actual pieces and objects don't move around so easily.

I had problems with it as well, and I have an onyx Lite. The most annoying so far was trying to turn a key with the stylus, where it didn't register at all for a while.

Can someone nudge me in the right direction on this? I really don't want to hit gamefaqs and have me read too much by mistake or by temptation...

I need one more white zodiac/lettered book for the bookshelf in the music room. I have access to the music room, butler's room, and the room with the dolls on the desk. I'm guessing that I'll get the keys to press on the piana by putting the books together and playing the zodiac symbols in order since she mentions the keys have zodiac symbols too - but I can't figure out how to get moving from here. Do the dolls have something to do with it? Just some little hint would be awesome.[/spoiler:d8c639d1e7]

it's been out for 2 years. You can probably find it sub 10 dollars without much looking.
I think it's pretty safe to say the price has probably already dropped. If you can still find it somewhere, that is.
need to look for it used then.
Pokemon FC: 2749 7579 5931
need LewieP to step up to the plate and bargain-hunt for me.
That's where I got mine.
Still worth going to the effort to find however. Some of the DS hardware based puzzles are sublime.
We should link these threads into some kind of uber awesome ds adventure thread.
