I had previously started the old new Pokémon thread, now I'm starting the new old Pokémon thread (I ran out of ideas).

Welcome to the G&T Pokémon thread, where we trade, battle and share opinions on the little critters.

If you don't care about Pokémon, then GTFO.

Pokémon short for ポケットモンスター or Pocket Monsters. They are creatures that are each one based on an element and are able to attack with moves from those elements. You use your own creatures to capture more and more species you find in the wild. There are 493 of them, and each one has a varying degree of usability in battle.

Tiers, much like in fighting games, will give you an idea of which of them will make it more likely to win a match, but won't necessarily guarantee your victory. For the most up-to-date tier list and probably the most reliable and most used, please refer to Smogon, which also offers examples of movesets and EV spreads that will give you an idea of what to do with yours.
GSC_Gold.png

If you want to be a trainer, and don't even know which version to buy, you can either get Diamond or Pearl for your battling needs, although there is a third version, Platinum (which is out now) and you might want to grab that one instead, as it features several options not available in Diamond or Pearl. There are also two other versions coming, Heart Gold and Soul Silver which are remakes of the game that came out exactly ten years ago in Japan.

[/quote]

What you need to start battling:

- First of all, finish the main game first. Trying to understand and manipulate EVs and IVs before that will be a pain.
- Once you've beaten the Elite Four, the real fun* begins. First, give Individual Values or IVs a read. You will also want to know everything about breeding and Effort Values or Evs. Natures Natures should also be read.
- Now that you know some things about EVs, you can either grind at the Battle Tower for the points needed to buy the Power Items or borrow them from someone who is used to play here at G&T. These items will make EV training much easier.
- If you aren't sure what to do with your Pokés, check out Smogon for some tips that will help you choose an appropriate EV spread and moveset for your Mons.
- Check out Psypoke's EV training spots.
- Also, check out what's inside the spoiler for a better way to breed eggs (doesn't work in Platinum):

- You might want to check Chen's list of what you should consider adding to your team:

01 Rapid Spin/Magne[strike]ton[/strike]zone
02 Rock resist
[strike]03 Roar/Whirlwind[/strike]
[strike]04 Mixpert counter[/strike]
05 Gengar counter
06 Special Tank
07 Physical Tank
[strike]08 Recover Zam counter[/strike]
[strike]09 Grass Type[/strike]
10 Toxic taker
11 Will-o-Wisp taker
12 Paralysis taker
13 Sleep taker
14 Fighting resistance
15 Tyranitar counter
[strike]16 Reversal counter[/strike]
[strike]17 Sludge Bomb Tentacruel counter[/strike]
18 Water type
[strike]19 Taunt Umbreon counter[/strike]
[strike]20 Jirachi Counter[/strike]
21 Celebi Counter
22 Normal resistance (Explosion)
[strike]23 Curselax counter[/strike]
24 Gyarados+[strike]Magneton[/strike]Electivire counter
25 Salamence counter (usually Ice Beam)
26 Ghost to block Rapid Spin (only if you're using Spikes)
27 Stealth Rock user
28 Draco Meteor taker
29 Outrage taker
30 Fire resistance (Heatran, Infernape)
31 Steel resistance
32 Priority user
33 Revenge killer (usually scarfed or priority user)
34 Trick taker

- And more importantly: Have fun! It doesn't matter if you win or lose. You must have learned something from experience, and if your newest creation wasn't as good as thought it'd be and you want to keep it boxed, don't feel discouraged. We all have trained some Pokémon that we'll never use again because it sounded better on paper than it performed in practice.

General battling rules
- Pokémon battles through Wi-fi automatically level your Pokémon to either levels 50 or 100. So you don't have to train them to level 100 yourself, saving a lot of time. In fact, it will be better if you don't level them up all the way to level 100 since you at that stage you won't be able to edit your Pokés' EVs.
-Sleep Clause: you may not put more than one of your opponent's Pokémon to sleep at a time.
-Species Clause: your team must be comprised of six different species of Pokémon.
-Suicide Clause: If both players are down to their last Pokémon, the player with the first Pokémon to hit 0 HP is the loser. In other words, using moves like Self Destruct and Explosion cause you to lose, even if it kills your opponent. However, using a move with a recoil that kill both you and your opponent is a win for you.
-No Legendary Pokémon whatsoever. This includes Wobbuffet and Garchomp.

Warnings

- Do NOT buy Pokémon Battle Revolution unless you hate yourself.
- If you use U-Turn with a Choice Banded Pokémon, and your next Pokémon also has U-Turn, it will be locked to U-Turn as well. It seems this was a glitch in DP ans was fixed in Platinum. Thanks to Ashton Dragon for the first bit of information and to InvisibleInk for the second bit.
- If your opponent Yawns you and you have a Chesto Berry, you might not want to use Rest, because at the end of that turn you will have woken up with the Chesto Berry after Resting, then you'll fall asleep again because of the Yawn.
- Don't take a bath with your Tentacool.
- Beware: The game is very addictive once you join the community. Make your time.

    The G&T Pokémon League

    kantogymleaders.jpg

Hi! Welcome to the exciting world of Pokémon! As an aspiring young Pokémon Trainer you're welcome to enter the G&T Pokémon League and prove your worth by challenging various skilled Trainers and earning their badges! Each badge will edge you closer to becoming a Pokémon Champion! Dare to give it a try?

    Standard Gym Rules

Each Gym Leader is bound to a certain type. A minimum of four Pokémon must adhere to that type. A Gym Leader may summon two species of a different type if he or she desires. However they must abide by having a move of the gym's type. For all intents and purposes, Hidden Power is of the Normal type.

You may choose any six Pokémon he or she wishes to challenge any Gym Leader. However you must abide by the following rules:

Uber Clause: The use of Uber Pokémon is forbidden. Click here for a list of Ubers.
Legendary Clause: The use of Legendary Pokémon is forbidden. Click here for a list of Legendaries.
Sleep Clause: You cannot put two of your opponent's Pokémon to sleep at the same time. (Rest not applicable)
Evasion Clause: No moves that increase evasion such as Double Team and Minimize may be used. Things like Sand-Attack and Sand Veil are still legal.
Species Clause: No two of the same Pokémon may be used on one team.
One-Hit KO Clause: One-hit KO (OHKO) moves, such as Horn Drill or Sheer Cold, are forbidden.
Selfdestruct Clause: The moves Selfdestruct, Explosion, Perish Song, Destiny Bond, or any other such move may not be used if both players only have 1 remaining Pokémon. If a player uses one of those moves under this condition, they automatically lose.

    Optional Gym Rules

Item Clause: All items are limited to one per team.
<Insert Move> Clause: The use of <insert move> is forbidden.
Double Battle: 2vs2 battles are initiated.

    Gym Activity

A Gym Leader may lose his or her status through inactivity. If a Gym Leader does not respond to your challenge by PM, please notify us by posting in this thread.

You may challenge an active Gym Leader and take over his or her gym by defeating him or her and abiding to the Gym Leader Rules. To clarify, you are limited to four Pokémon of that particular gym's type and two Pokémon of a different type that must carry a move of the gym's type.

About the discussion on tiers from the last thread: I'll admit that I never spent the time to make a competitive team, but is stealth rocks and the other stuff smogon obsesses about really as prevelant as they make it out to be, making dozens of pokemon completely unusable (NU) because of a rock weakness?

Short answer is yes. Here's a link on usage in Shoddy battle over the last two months http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69643. I can pull up some other stuff if you like, math and statistics done by far more intelligent people than I, but yeah its huge.

There's a reason why so many people cry out about Stealth Rock.

It's just too good. Unlike other entry hazards, it sets up at full power in a single turn, and there's no type immune to Rock. Unlike the other ones, in which Ground and Poison immunity allows you to still safely switch in some Pokemon. It's just to easy to use, and too powerful.

I really hope they find a way to tone it down in B/W.

Or for hilarity pull a MvC2 and instead throw in half a dozen more moves just like Stealth Rock only of different types.

Game Freak wasn't satisfied with Fire types having two of the three worst weaknesses in the game (Water and Ground), so they decided they needed to elevate Rock to one of the worst weaknesses to have as well. :(

They really need to throw Fire types a bone. Ideally a bone that doesn't involve a Fighting secondary type.

I have trouble considering Fire as a good offensive type these days. Close Combat, Aura Sphere, Focus Blast, and Earthquake are pretty common, so it's not really massively difficult to find something to hurt Steel types.

Honestly the only reason I see people run Fire moves for these days is for Scizor, or obviously for STAB on Heatran. (And the two generally go together, with Scizor baiting out the Fire moves for Heatran's Flash Fire)

EDIT: Oh, also Skarmory I guess. Fire is one of the few good methods of hurting him, although he's just as weak to Lightning which tends to be more useful in general.

I think the problem is compounded by the fact that almost every dragon learns fire moves, so you can run your fire moves on pokemon that are pretty great both defensively and offensively, and not have to suffer with their poor weaknesses. You don't even need STAB, since things like Scizor which are weak to fire, fall over like a house of cards with a slight burn.

Sunny Day would see more play if it offered more bonuses. It really only buffs fire, Makes Solarbeam pro and lowers accuracy for one electric move. I think it also prevents freezing but I'm not sure.

I think if it prevented Sleep effects , Burned pokemon that used fly ( this is more for a hilarious outcome versus a rookie) , and lowered Electric accuracy in general it would be a strong basis for a team .

back in the Gen I days I sketched a Grass/Fire type that was basically a walking chili. It evolved into a Jalapeño with a sombrero and maracas. My friend called me racist, but then Ludiculo came out and I felt robbed and realized Japan is way more racist than i could ever be.

But isn't shoddy in kind of it's own categoy, what with being able to create pokemon with perfect Hidden Powers and stuff?

In a way, yes, because its an artificial environment, where the barrier to creating a good pokemon are substantially lowered.

But in real life, people go through hell to get good IVs and the correct hidden powers. Shoddy shows what happens given that everyone has access to the pokemon they want, so their data is still valid.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the format also over there to battle 6 on 6?

I'm playing a lot of battle tower atm and since it's 3 on 3, stuff like advising stealth rock doesn't mean much, there are far less switches. And since the computer doesn't know how broken double team and minimize are, it makes it far more important to keep those moves that don't factor in accuracy.

Yes, everything is balanced for 6v6.

3v3 is a totally different game. Much more aggressive.

I fell in love with Ludicolo the moment I saw it. It may not be too great an exageration to say Ludicolo got me back into Pokemon.

Back when Ruby and Sapphire came out and they were incompatible with G/S/C, I ragequit for awhile. Then when Emerald had been out for a little while I checked it out again and saw Ludicolo.

I bought Emerald and one of the very first things I did was breed a Calm Lotad with Leech Seed and Synthesis.

If I ever need to blame something for getting me back into this horrible addiction, I will always point to the Mexican Dancing Pineapple Duck.
