This sounds awesome.... I got the X-com pack during the 2010 steam summer sale and still need to finish my playthrough... I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to games so I kind of stopped playing when I realized my whole squad is going to be wiped out and lose the transport as well. Which I know isn't the way to play. I just need to man up, accept my losses and get some revenge on the greys later.

Accept your losses, savescum, or cowboy up and kick alien ass.
(This begins by losing a lot.)
Eventually, you get a squad of decorated hardasses!
...who still will eventually die like sissies. Patrick Stewart, Marc Lecointe, Vivixenne, all filling unmarked graves. Only one squaddie in a million lives through an entire campaign without reloading.
If there is any justice in this world, the TBS will outsell the FPS
Hint: It won't, but oh well we still get one new TBS out of the deal, and the first one has lasted us this long already so here's hoping.
I don't know, FPS is a *highly* saturated market. The original release date was also right up against Mass Effect 3 (practically the same type of game, but most assuredly way better) but I think they delayed it.
Plus the Civilization games sell well, don't they? I mean, market the thing as Civilization with aliens and actual combat and it could do ok even with people not super familiar with the brand.
Oh please let this be good. Please let this not be a massive disappointment and overall a bit shit. Although having said that, if it does turn out a bit crap, inevitably the PC modding community will find a way to clone across the original UFO: Enemy Unknown onto this new shiny engine and make things right again. Unless you decide to get it on a console.

That is one almost certain thing with the Firaxis XCOM. They've been really good about including full mod support in their games.
Well I'm not talking about petitions or anything but I think it is likely that the reaction, mostly on the internet, to the FPS probably had a hand in this making it into development.
I really want to be excited about this, but I can't help but feel like it's only a matter of time before bad news starts coming out. Then again, it is Firaxis, so that feeling could very well be unfounded.

Then that means that Firaxis signed on for an incredibly short development cycle. I just don't buy that. This has probably been in the works for a while, and most likely was planned as a simultaneous release with the FPS XCOM as a download only title for consoles and PC.
Hrm. Prior Firaxis games that I've played:
* Sid Meier's Gettysburg! (1997)
* Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (1999)
* Civilization III (2001)
* SimGolf (2002)
* Sid Meier's Pirates! (2004)
* Civilization IV (2005)
* Civilization Revolution (2008)
It's not a complete list of Firaxis games (I've not played Sid Meier's Railroad or Civ V, for example), but I can't see a single game on my Firaxis playlist that I didn't enjoy.

Firaxis is good pedigree, so there's little doubt that the game will be good strategy-in'.
The only thing I don't know about is how their UI is going to be, seeing as how a good UI is kind of essential for this type of game and that this is their first multiplatform outing. Are they going the DX:HR route where the PC version feels like a real ass PC game, or they going all Bethesda on everything (i.e. "one interface for all and fuck bothering with a PC specific one even though we make more money than god and can afford it.") I think I trust them on this though.
Another is how much 2K is going to nickle-and-dime this shit with DLC ala Civ5.

Eh. We first heard about FPS not-X-com like two years ago and it is releasing this year. We are just now hearing about actual X-com for the first time and it is releasing this year.
I think the short development cycle is pretty much a given at this point.

Then we'll just have to disagree. Which is nothing unusual for me in this thread, since I disagree with just about everyone in it on just about everything. :P

Yeah, my read is based mostly on intuition so it's not like I'm going to have evidence to convince anybody.
Ah, pardon moi faux pau. I'm a sucker for really weird guns and retro sci-fi, so the FPS had definitely intrigued me. It'll be interesting to see how the TBS and the FPS do, sales wise.

I'm pulling things out of my ass, but I figure the FPS will sell like hotcakes (regardless of its quality, it may be good or bad, who knows?) and the TBS will be a commercial flop despite critical acclaim.

I think they'll both sell well, but not spectacularly. Enough units will get pushed to justify DLC, but probably not sequels.

Well Firaxis has had the X-COM rights for a few years now, I certainly remember posting about it in this forum before. I tried searching for the post but didn´t find it, found this tough, that is from February 2007 and Firaxis already held the rights back then. So this game has probably been in development for some time, maybe even before the FPS was announced, who knows.
Edit: I guess my sig shows what this announcement made me do. :P

Or at least the end of all my personal relationships.
It's almost like some kind of strategy.
"We'll start an epic FIRESTORM of publicity, and then douse it with a HURRICANE announcement!"

I had one of those squaddies.
Why I fear the ocean.
Internet rage accomplished something good.
I kind of doubt it.

I'm hopeful.

The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
Also, new cutscenes and no difficulty glitch. TFTD was ported too, but that one's insanely rare.

I don't think I can verbalize how happy this makes me.
I'm still getting XCOM (the FPS one) but it will be playing a distant 2nd to this.
What are the odds that the maps are randomized and the environment is fully destructible?
They already mentioned destructible environments.
I bet this one will have gravity, like Apoc. I love gravity in these. Take out the ground floor supports, watch everything fall.
Why I fear the ocean.

TBS! Well, sorta a blend if the geoscape is the same as it was.

Double Edit: It seems that they have the rights since 2002!, about damn time to release it then Firaxis... :P
