Man I was confused as all hell when I saw this on the front page, click one page back from the most recent and see people clamouring for the game to come out so they can buy it.
Then I click a page further back and it all makes sense.
A Firaxis developed version of what I wanted originally from this whole thing originally? Sold.
Well, I'm glad the fans are getting an RTS sequel, but I am more excited for the FPS, to be honest.
TBS! Well, sorta a blend if the geoscape is the same as it was.
Oh please please please let there be a RTS/CTBS mode like in Apocalypse. Being able to plot out R6ish movement plans and watching shit being able to unfold was the absolute best.

Sweeeet. They can do whatever the hell they want with the Xcom FPS as long the good version is actually good.
Though to be honest, I can't say I want the new one to be just like the first couple of games, at least in terms of how combat plays out. Having the option of classic turn-based mode in Apocalypse was great, but not nearly as great as turning 40-minute slogs while looking for a couple aliens into 2-minute sweeps.
Ah, pardon moi faux pau. I'm a sucker for really weird guns and retro sci-fi, so the FPS had definitely intrigued me. It'll be interesting to see how the TBS and the FPS do, sales wise.
I'm pulling things out of my ass, but I figure the FPS will sell like hotcakes (regardless of its quality, it may be good or bad, who knows?) and the TBS will be a commercial flop despite critical acclaim.
It seems that FPS games these days are like Hollywood action movies... attach a big name (X-COM, Syndicate) and you got a pretty safe summer blockbuster, whereas any other genre is like going to the Sundance Film Festival...
Heard the proposition that RIAA and MPAA should join forces and form "Music And Film Industry Association"?
Firaxis is good pedigree, so there's little doubt that the game will be good strategy-in'.
The only thing I don't know about is how their UI is going to be, seeing as how a good UI is kind of essential for this type of game and that this is their first multiplatform outing. Are they going the DX:HR route where the PC version feels like a real ass PC game, or they going all Bethesda on everything (i.e. "one interface for all and fuck bothering with a PC specific one even though we make more money than god and can afford it.") I think I trust them on this though.
In fairness, the old games don't exactly have a fabulously intuitive UI, and people have been playing them for ages.

Hey, I think Game Informer made a mistake with that cover:
Wow. Can we Flash Kick and Sonic Boom teh aliumz nao?
That picture is not accurate. That rifle looks like the starting rifle before you get your hands on lazer tech. So its early game.
And a early game situation where your squad isn't dying horribly is extremely rare.
If we pan the camera round, we'd probably see countless dead bodies, and the only other surviving squad member about to shoot crouching guy in the back of the head while a Sectoid leader cackles in the background.

The troopers who survived the early days of my X-com game became alien killing legends.
I say troopers.....there was only one guy. Casualties weren't THAT bad until my first terror mission at night. There were Chryssalids.
I have never played an X-Com but Im super bored at work and just reading random threads, and the last 4 pages of this thread makes me want to play all of them in a row.
This sounds so, so cool. How accessable is it to someone who's mainly just played "Babies first RTS" games? Like Halo Wars and Tom Clancy's Endwar...

Play on the easiest setting. Prepare to lose a lot of troopers.
X-COM is a harsh mistress but you will end up loving her. Like Stockholm syndrome.

For me, the toughest part to learn was that you sometimes just have to cut and run.

Oh very much yes. This is not one of your "modern" games where if you can attempt it you can definitely succeed. There are missions that taking on early will just mean you need a new set of recruits.
Early night time terror mission? I have a special force package ready to be sent out for that. It consists of my sympathies.
So am I going to be tarred and feathered for believing that both new XCOM games are each going to be very high quality products that I very much want to play?

Well, I'm excited to have a new X-com xcom game. That said, the FPS is going to outsell the strategy xcom by like 1000:1 and still be a commercial letdown for the publisher. Then they'll say "See! strategy is dead!" and they'll probably just bury the franchise in the deepest sub-dungeons they have access to.

I'm in the same boat. If you take the tarring, I'll take the feathering.
This is the highlight of my day. Can not wait to get sucked into a new franchise 20 years late.
You can play X-com in a Ti-89....maybe even aTi-83.
It's amazing how this old as fuck game holds up for so damn long. It's, by far, the oldest game that I continually play.

So, I came late to the party and read about the Firaxis X-Com and there was much rejoicing.
That's going to be so horrifically addictive.

I count 2 dead humans (3 if you assume the driver is dead too) to one live one.
Sounds like X Com to me.

Dragging alien bodies and technology along the way back to base! Had you forgotten that?
Instead of a Sectoid on all fours, it should've had this grinning bastard in the headlights.
well there is only one x-com soldier in the picture... no wait, there's another one accurately dying in a plume of fire.
This is the highlight of my day. Can not wait to get sucked into a new franchise 20 years late.
Pretty sure that would send most of the potential customers into fear induced comas.

If the terror mission ends before then? Welp
is that actually a street fighter/Guile reference, or is it of that one character portrait in the original x-com(s)?
Judging by Let's Plays I've seen of XCOM, that character's head is spot on of what the original portraits were.
