Which magic school learns the most reliable AOE damage spell first? Ice Elementalist is fun but I always end up dying in the Lair what with its wide open spaces and swarms of dogs and frogs.

I've never fought a higher level slime yet but I have no idea how my stuff got corroded.

If you hit Control-P you can scroll through your message history for 1000 lines with Page Up and Page Down.

You've probably fought a Red Ooze or six, they can corrode equipment.

Does it have to do direct damage? Because Mephitic Cloud is awesome for clearing the lair but it just makes baddies confused and hit each other rather than direct damage.

It's in starting spellbooks for Venom Mages, Wizards, Air Elementalists. Possibly also others I haven't used much.

I was really enjoying my kenku necromancer assassin until he miscast animate dead and it.... killed him. I trained up my sneaking, short blades and stabbing plus unarmed combat increased itself even when i turned it off since kenkus can claw and peck. I'd usually try and sneak around and stab things. If I had to get into a fight, I'd cast drain life during said fight as I fought with the knife, claws and beak, plus I had pain as a long range spell, drain, plus the fighting skill being increased made this character surprisingly strudy, plus he has lots of quick, precise attacks and could dodge quite well.

For bigger mobs and bosses, if I couldn't sneak and stab, I'd pray to my god for piles of corpses to surround me then use animate dead to instantly raise an army, running back and casting pain/drain on anything I could.

How do I prevent mis-casts? Do I level up spellcasting or the specific school of magic? Plus am I right to assume intelligence helps prevent mis-casts? I had int and dex evened out.

Not counting mephitic cloud (which is one of the best spells in the game) and shock (which isn't really what you're looking for, damage wise) venom bolt is the most reliable early AOE spell --some of its damage is unresistable so it works on poison-immunes, it penetrates the same way bolt of fire / bolt of cold do, and it comes a spell level earlier.

Venom has the disadvantage of rocking early but being able to work on less and less later in the game. It's still one of my favourite schools of magic though, since you realistically have to branch out into other spell schools regardless of which one you pick to start with and poison is just so good against a lot of the things that otherwise might give you trouble (not counting ghosts --not much sucks more than running into the ghost of your last venom mage when you only have poison magic.) The poison cloud spell is also (IIRC) easier to use than the cold and fire cloud spells.

That said, ice is actually pretty good to take into lair as it has a chance to slow down the move/attack speed of reptiles like frogs and snakes. Lair is a great place to learn how important it is to take things slowly and stick to walls/corridors.

Conjurer - Fire is a good spellcaster class to try out. You get fire spells, you miss out on mephitic but get conjure flame (which isn't nearly as good but will still save your ass in many bad spots,) and perhaps most importantly you start with earth-magic spells you can learn.

All of those things affect casting success. The direct schools of the spell or the most important. Then it's I think spellcasting then intelligence.

    ---

There is really not a whole lot in the way of area damage low level spells. There's Iskenderun's Mystic Blast and Ozucobu's Refrigeration Level 4 and 5. I could never find Mystic Blast but apparently it's more common now. I guess Shatter works, but that's situational and I don't know how effective it is.

You're mostly best off with spells that hit in a straight line for damaging multiple things at once.

Poison is actually one of the conjuration schools you don't necessarily have to branch out of. Poison Arrow does plenty of damage against anything.

Actually, looks like they nerfed it in the latest version : (

Currently sitting on the fifth floor of the Snake Pits. Not many issues getting down here. But the first battle on this floor did leave me with 4 HP left. After that I took on a named spellcaster, was busting their head in fine, until they uttered a spell and I awoke in the abyss.

After running around using all my healing and speed potions along with every scroll of teleport in my possession, I got cornered for the last time. hyperventilating, I put on my ring of teleportation and attempted repeatedly to get the evocation off. It was finally succesfully and I came to in front of the portal out of the abyss.

I can't tell you how scared I was, for sure I thought that was it. A balrog and a few other higher level demons knocked me within an inch of my life several times, nothing prepares you for that.

Here's a picture before that whole ordeal.

Having a shroud of darkness follow you around makes it KIND OF OBVIOUS when you've entered the room.

Ditto with the Silence spell. Going deaf tends to tip things off.

redraptor: don't carry so much food. It can be destroyed and you really won't need 32 honeycombs any time soon. Alternate armors probably aren't that useful either, because you can't really change them for a specific situation (takes FAR too long)... though it might actually be kind of nice to have an armor of fire resistance if you stumble upon a temporary portal to Firetown, population: Dragons.

[edit]Haha! I'm playing a Mountain Dwarf Fighter, going down as quickly as I can for shits and giggles. On D:3, at level 1, I kill a Giant Frog... and immediately gain three levels.

And then I die by drinking all the wrong potions in a tough fight.

So... Kikubaaqudgha gives the Necronomicon at Max piety. Then apparently people switch to Yredelemnul, as Yredelemnul gives random free undead, as well as backup raises, life drain, etc.

Does Sif Muna ever give out the Necronomicon? Or does it matter -- Sif Muna's books also tend to be, you know, randarts, and would in theory have the same spells?? I like Sif Muna's ability to forget spells and regain mana for free (as a mummy, it's free, anyway).

I just tried Desktop Dungeons for the first time, and I don't really get it.

Everything is frozen into place, and nothing moves... and you only replenish energy by uncovering new tiles... and you can only fight enemies lower level than you... so... it's a puzzle game?

What happens when there are no new tiles to uncover and all the remaining monsters are higher level than you?

I had that much food because I was on my way to my stash in the Lair after clearing the hives. Probably right about the armor though, bt I figured I'd switch from my poison resist stuff after leaving the hive since plate mail made my AC better.

I have had a big problem with getting scrolls destroyed this run, will probably only keep a few teleport ones on me from now on and do my identifying etc. at the stash. How do you drop a certain number of items from a large pile?

Not only can you attack enemies of a higher level, but its often desirable. You gain extra experience for how far above your level they are, so if you can take out a higher level character and not die, its very beneficial.

As far as that last sentence, you should be ready to kill the boss at that point. Though, sometimes you want to go after the boss earlier(for example, if you have poison, so you can hurt him, explore to gain life, then hurt him more, repeat).

Instead of shift-clicking on something to drop hit, press "d" (or it might be "D") to open the drop menu, then you can hit "7X" where X is the item you want to drop and 7 is how many of that item, etc.

It's pretty much a roguelike-themed (roguelike-like?) puzzle game, yeah. And you can defeat higher level enemies, sometimes much higher. It takes some time to figure it all out.

Hmm... ok, I think I understand the Desktop Dungeon mechanics now... but... is this fun?

I mean, when it's game over in a Roguelike, you feel like "god damnit"... when you spot that it's game over in Desktop Dungeons, it's more of like... check mate... "ok... guess I'd better start over"...

Very anti-climactic, the whole thing, imo.

I think the fun with desktop dungeons is more in once you start unlocking things. You get on a really big roll, and then you need to start using strange combinations to beat levels, etc with all the classes.

Its really awesome as a 10 minutes to kill game, than a sit down and spend your free time playing. Thats what stone soup is for :P

Immune to hostile enchantments just means they're immune to Enchantments, with a capital E. Things like Slow, Confuse, etc. A wand of Disintegration will actually one-shot some statues but won't effect others at all. You can always blast statues with Conjurations, it will just take many shots during which you're vulnerable.

Snake Pit, Level 5. First this happened.
    pigfa.jpg
After I cured my Werepig syndrome, I made another attempt at the boss room.

Unfortunately I ended up getting killed. Bums me out majorly, since a greater naga got me and I'd already dropped a few of them.

This one was in the main chamber and not a hallway and when I moved in on it I got poison arrowed several times consecutively. I didn't realize how damaging the arrows could be and noticed too late that I had used too much piety in the Abyss and no longer had my Haste skill available.

I hid behind a post and used a teleport scroll but it unluckily put me further into danger, poison knocked me down when I was trying to teleport again.

Crud, but I ended up scoring just over 100k points. Beating my next best score by roughly... 94000 points. I expect my average character will be doing a lot better as a result, same thing happened last time I got much further into the game.

Does anyone know how the scoring even works?

Other than really high AC and good use of a bunch of weapon/armor enchant scrolls I could have had better items going on. The most convenient drop that happened in that run was finding a artifact cloak which gave the levitation power... on the shore of the lake in the Hive where you need levitation to get to a hidden area. Awesome.

My gifts from Okawaru were all worse versions of the weapon I was using, so that was disappointing, could have used some armor pieces.

I think I was a little too excited to find a guardian naga and eat it for some mutations unfortunately. I have this thing that as the action gets more furious I start playing faster, even though I don't really have to. If I had to do it again I would probably have postponed the last level of the snake pits and tooled around the main dungeon a bit more since I was running through most things there without any problem.

Oh well, this character had a silly name anyways.

The top end nagas are really really nasty. You should stay away from the bottom level of snake pit until you are a higher level and have cleared some other stuff out.

Does anyone else 'dance for Xom'? As in, intentionally drink potions of poision and read scrolls of exploding and whatever?

I've done it a few times.
    None of them intentionally :x

I think my idea of a roguelike is completely different than the sort this thread is suffering, but whatever. :P

I must have some sort of RNG magnet for unreadable books, my latest level 4 wizard on D3 has already found one.

Edit: Just died to a pair of orc priests; it was another Necronomicon rofl

One of the bad things about being a Deep Elf Wizard; you can't really use any of the artifact weapons or heavy armor you come across.

    Like this thing.

    Crawl 0.6.0.

The scariest phrase I've ever read in a roguelike to date.

"The hound comes down the stairs."

If enemies can chase me between levels now, it's all over. Roguelike enemies were always like Ed-209; stairs were my only defense!

Does anyone else 'dance for Xom'? As in, intentionally drink potions of poision and read scrolls of exploding and whatever?

Oh, totally. Xom loves me. He calls me me his "Teddy Bear."

And then he summons demons to rape me horribly.

It's a little game we play.
