    It occurs to me: does any Roguelike have a basilisk or something that turns you to stone for examining them? Because I'd totally expect somebody to have said at some point, "you know, looking at stuff is TOO SAFE..."

    There is a basilisk here.
    You have turned to stone!
    You die.

    Yes, but isn't it that you just need to wear a blindfold to block her gaze attack? It doesn't instill a primal fear of looking at things.

    If you're blind and try to examine a cockatrice corpse without gloves ("You reach down and feel something on the floor..."), you'll be in for a wonderful surprise.

    In Ragnarok you can wield a cockatrice (and i think basilisks if you're strong enough) as weapons, but without gloves or petrification immunity it's not a good idea. It also gives you useless statues instead of useful lootable corpses.

    You can do this in Nethack, too.

    Nethack has all sorts of fun cockatrice-related deaths. All of the following will kill you:
    - While not wearing boots, kick a cockatrice corpse;
    - While wielding a cockatrice corpse as a weapon, somehow lose your gloves (e.g. by overenchantment);
    - While wielding a cockatrice corpse as a weapon, fall into a pit trap or trip and fall down the stairs;
    - While standing on a cockatrice corpse and not wearing gloves, inspect the current tile;
    - While blind and not wearing gloves, walk over a cockatrice corpse (being blind, naturally you'll "feel" your way around);
    - While not wearing a helmet, throw a cockatrice corpse directly up

    In Ragnarok if you get berserked for some reason you wield a random item in your inventory. I definitely got killed that way once.

    I think I heard somewhere that eggs in Nethack can sometimes be cockatrice eggs and the game won't be so good as to tell you so.

    I have never played Nethack for more than 30 seconds so maybe there aren't eggs at all. D:

    Yeah, I'm super bad at NetHack.

    I'm not doing too hot at Crawl either, but certainly better than I was at Nethack.

    Last night I was disappointed to see an altar of Trogg on the other side of a wall of flame I was pretty sure would kill me. From the looks I thought he might be a god actually useful to my assassin.
    Then 30 seconds later I found the Ecumenical Temple :)
    I had a good game going with actually having a god and a +0 +4 dagger of venom, then I went down to level 4 right in the middle of some named mobs slave band. They rocked my world.

    As an Assassin, your most important tool are Needles of Curare. They slow the target and apply a very strong poison; save them for Ogres and certain named monsters (Sigmund, Pikel, etc).

    What race are you playing as Assassin?

    These are really fun actually. If you polymorph yourself into a cockatrice, lay an egg (you have to be female), and then bag them they are emergency grenades basically. Seeing as how stoning will kill near anything, you have an escape plan for tough times.

    Although it sucks if you eat an egg that is lying around that turns out to be a cockatrice egg. This is why you always carry a lizard corpse in nethack. Always.

    are lizard corpses like clay lumps in Ragnarok? eat em while you're stoning and you get fixed up? I don't remember if corpses rot in nethack.

    Also, I hate food in Dungeon Crawl. I chop up something, and I'm never hungry enough to eat any of it until after it rots. Terrible timing.

    .

    Yeah, that is their purpose. Corpses do rot in nethack with a few exceptions; notably lichen (nice source of emergency food, but they are heavy compared to rations) and lizard corpses (so you don't get boned by cockatrice).

    Holy shit, Stone Soup rewards me every time I start with just more and more interesting starting rooms. This time, I got basically a gallery of monsters. Awesome monsters!

    Also, level 1 and I found a ring of invisibility. How many times can I activate it and how long does it last?

    Or is it all random?

    FUUUUUUCK! Orc wizard got me on level 2. So stupid. Turns out I had a wand of disintegration as well. Sloppy.

    You can activate it as many times as you want, it warns you right before it's going to turn off. Not sure exactly how long it lasts.

    Invisibility in Crawl is functionally a gigantic buff to your stealth rating, which is negated by things that can see invisible. Things will try to fight back once you make them aware you are there somewhere.

    Lucky bastard. I never seem to find those on my Assassins and that's all I ever really want to find, heh.

    Put it on, and then you can evoke it with... "v', methinks. It's capital V to evoke something you're holding.

    It'll last a short while then wear off; you need Evocations skill to do it successfully and probably for it to last longer.

    Items that give you abilities (such as levitation, invis, blink, teleport, and enrage) can be used in the abilities screen by hitting "a". Invis does make you glow, so don't overuse it.

    Heh, I was being attack by a bunch of orcs and a wizard and started randomly drinking potions and reading scrolls to try and survive. One scroll made me glow, the next potion made me invisible. Did the glowing negate that?

    Also, my complaint about food is fixed! In my current game I found a necklace of the gourmand.

    Also yeah, the starting rooms are neat. I was given one in my current game that was completely surrounded by deep water. You had to go down a level and come back up another staircase to explore the outer parts of the first level.

    I'm not sure how glow affects stealth, but it does make you easier to hit and if it gets too high it can give you random bad effects.

    Ring of Invisibility was actually the first ring I found this time. Two Rods of Destruction, Young Poisoner's Handbook (the perfect beginning spellbook for a Spriggan Assassin), plenty of good potions, plenty of good scrolls (had some Enchant Armors in my stash and a Recharge), good weapons, had just found two shops...

    Saw a sleeping Ogre, snuck up on him to stab him, a Giant Eyeball came into view and paralyzed me, the Ogre woke up and bashed the shit out of me. End of game.

    I'll play another 50 spriggan assassins before finding that combo of gear again.

    I switched crawl onto a new netbook but I'm having a couple weird problems.

    Seems to run only in fullscreen, how do I switch this?

    Also, more importantly, everytime I die the game closes, then boots up with my character alive and saved at the start of the floor. I don't want to cheat Crawl, why are you trying to make me? How can I fix this?

    Is there some sort of protection on the folder Crawl is in? If you figure it out let me know because that actually sounds perfect to me.

    I suppose you could remove the delete permission from the files in the saves folder, but that might cause problems later on if needs to remove any of those files for non-death reasons.

    I'm running it off of a external harddrive on Windows 7. It must have seomthing to do with protections because any game save overwrites the run fine, but dying just results in your save not being deleted, non-roguelike style.

    I had a bit of an interesting time on Zot:5. Despite me being decently careful for traps and having a high traps and doors skill, I blundered onto a teleport trap, which set me down in the orb vault next to some rather unfriendly orb guardians and orbs of fire. I basically had to chug one of everything in terms of consumables running around trying to get teleports off to get me out of there.

    Also, Orb of Destruction is really powerful, but you can run into some snags using it. If you try to shoot it down a long 1-width corridor, a lot of the time it will smack into the wall and blow it up. I also had a fun time where I was dancing with an orb of fire a bit firing orbs of destruction at it, one of them flew past it, circled around trying to follow it, and hit me in the face. I lost somewhere around a third or a half of my health to my own orb.

    Look at that shit. So many zot traps.

    Summoned demons are pretty dang sweet in here, though.

    I managed to do this to an NPC, wanna say it was Boris. Straight out of Hunt for Red October.

    "You arrogant ass, you've killed us!" A second time in Boris's case.

    Somehow I screwed up my save file in Crawl I think. It won't let me wield any weapons other than what I've got. Rather, it will, but as soon as I swap between weapon sets, it resets it. Which is annoying since I found a +4/+4 blowgun, but every time I switch back to my melee set, it reequips my +0/+0 one. If I drop the lesser one, it just empties that weapon slot when I switch, so I'd have to re-equip and re-quiver every time I switch between weapons. It does that for the other weapon set as well, but I rarely change weapons in that one.

    Anyone know what I screwed up? I was save-scumming, so I don't know if I somehow copied or didn't copy a file I should have.

    A ziggurat is a death trap filled with treasure. 27 floors of small rooms filled with various monsters, with a load of treasure at the exit of each floor. You can run into fun stuff like angels and Pandemonium lords inside.

    You need to press = to reassign the letters for your weapons. The quick switch changes between 'a' and 'b'.

    Arg! The game has never gone this well! I'm level 10 on dungeon 9 with an almost full inventory of stuff... but I still have my original armor and shield, and only a crappy -1 orcish war axe to fight with... :(

    EDIT: Forgot to mention, the thing which keeps me alive is, I think, one +4 ring of protection and one +4 ring of slaying that I got at around level 1-2...

    You found a ziggurat in the upper floors of the dungeon? Weird, both of the zigs I've found were in Pandemonium.
