You found a ziggurat in the upper floors of the dungeon? Weird, both of the zigs I've found were in Pandemonium.

In one game I found Zig portals on something like D8 and D20.

Though finding a ton of scrolls of identify, a +2 splint mail, and another amulet of the gourmand right off the bat helped. The only trouble I had was with Sigmund. had to chain chug healing potions to get through that.

So I did something amazingly stupid last night playing through a DE Mage. He was doing outstanding, firing ice bolts no problem and almost hunger free, 3-4 levels of fighting, had haste and could cast it, successfully escaped from the abyss after a unwielding a distortion weapon, amulet of gourmand, swamp dragon armor, see invis... all before Dungeon 15. No real stashes explored yet but this guy is going great. Best .6 toon I've had yet. My retarded self managed to die to a pack of green rats, in the middle of changing armor.

Now back in .5 when I'm looking at a situation like this (before the death), food isnt an issue, virtually nothing except maybe boris or high level undead if I dont have dispell undead yet is a threat to me, etc. what I do is take things nice and slow, clear out hive cache, bottom of lair, quick jaunt to elf area for a magic buckler and good robe if I get lucky, then I head to Vault 7 with my amulet of gourmand and/or ring of sustanence to get my spell schools all up to 15+, 27 for spell casting. Grind up traps so I dont wander into zot traps, armor a bit, fighting, etc. A nice strong caster toon capable of more than a 3 rune run of zot.

However, I tried to do a bit of grinding as a mummy on DL1 on a toon and got myself killed by some insanely out of depth mobs. One of the new ugly things. I looked it up a bit and it seems that they did put in some anti scumming code but I cant really seem to figure out if its just something to stop people from afk scumming snake 2 and early levels as a mummy/vamp or if its a hardcore scumm-and-die code. Anyone have any experience with that yet?

Other than that I've been having a hair pullingly good time with the game. I havent managed to try any of the new gods yet, but the slime god and the time god both seem cool. Slime god to pump up mutations, then drop him and go to another god. I've tried a few times to get a naga with the time god for the slouch, but I just cant play naga worth a damn.

Oh, and can casters still use bucklers? I had no problem at all in .5 using a buckler, but slapped one on for 2 seconds in .6 and my spell casting rates took a serious hit. Took it off again. Normally a buckler is a great source of resistance but that hit is pretty hard. Does it get any better quickly enough to warrent using a buckler?

I've been using a buckler on my mage character. Actually, a medium sized shield with +5 int on it. Maybe that int helps offset the penalty.

The Abyss is pretty nice for grinding exp on my paladin. Now that he has fighting/shields/long blades all maxed, it's a struggle not to hit the 20k exp cap before I can take some time to level up something.

You get a random one for every chunk of mutagenic (purple text) meat you consume. Potions of mutation give you 1-3 random mutations. There is, (was?) a spell that gave you random mutations. Never seen it or used it though. the new slime god does stuff with mutations. You can constantly miscast spells, or make yourself invisible or hasted or mighted or whatever a bunch, and you'll start glowing. When the glow is yellow instead of grey, you'll start mutating, but these are almost always mutations you would never want.

You DON'T want mutations from magical contamination. They are always bad, with the ONE exception of carnivorism, which is considered bad but really it isn't.

Or maybe not always, because the game doesn't roll like that. 90% maybe.

Grrrr, I had a good game of Ragnarok going.
I had cleared out the woods, and in doing so found a Red Bag (essentially a bag of holding). I had found the artifact in Slaeter's Sea, which turned out to be the Amulet of Might, so I between those two I had no encumbrance and a massive inventory space available.
I had abused the weird fume to grow 3 extra eyes and 7 extra fingers, so I hit often, and had tons of extra ring space.
In fact, the only downside to my game so far, was that I was vertiginous from fumes (a permanent condition which causes you to randomly become confused for a few turns. If I remember it correctly, it can only be cured by either getting lucky from a Mist trap, or drinking a blessed potion of curing. Unfortunately, every time the fume applies that effect to you you get an invisible stack of the condition. I don't know how many I had, but it was probably upwards of 20 or 30. At this point in the game I can't get enough potions of curing to clear it. On the plus side it means if I want to use confused scroll reading for certain effects I don't have to depend on getting drunk or eating bats.)
That and I hadn't found a ring of regeneration yet, which are massively useful in the beginning and middle of the game. Things were going swell.

So I park myself over the down stairs to dungeon, do a backup save of my game (this game actually has an option to do permanent saves, but you can't do it more frequently than every 200 turns.) I read a blessed scroll of wonder, and on my first try it transforms me into a Swordmaster.

Fantastic. This easily one of the two or three best transformations you can get, and arguably the best. Despite being technically a human, they have slightly less maximum strength than a human. That's the only downside. They are 4 times faster than a human (making them 4 times faster than about 70% of the enemies in the game, and twice as fast as another 20% ish.) They come with about 30 ranks of practice in all projectiles, the blademaster ability, giving them bonus damage and effects when using sais, katanas, and runeblades, and the largely useless but fun origami skill.

So I cheer, step down into the dungeon and immediately step on a monster trap. The walls fall down to reveal about 20 slinns. Large crablike dudes who spew corrosive acid. However, being absurdly fast, and absurdly strong thanks to my amulet, I mow them down, gaining 5 levels in the process since they were much higher level than me. Things are going swimmingly!
I explore a bit, clear a couple zones, find some things, then bring up my world map.

OOPS! I forgot to set the expanded memory settings in the DOS shortcut so it couldn't bring up the map. No biggie right, I'll just hop out of the game and fix it. the game itself said I should do that.

Nope. when it freaked out while trying to load the map, it also obliterated my entire inventory. Not only removing all my equipment, scrolls, wands, and potions, but my red bag and amulet of might, which are only spawned once per game and cannot be recovered.

    :(

So I reload my game and try to get a decent transformation again, and can't get anything more useful than a Ramapith, which is barely better than a human at all.

Yeah, I was just going to say; Killer Bees are actually vulnerable to poison. Mephitic Cloud would basically light them up and you could pick them off at your leisure. Plus they'd sting each other a lot and that would help you out.

My favorite way to clear the Hive is walk into the middle of the honeycomb, shout a few times, then drop a Poisonous Cloud on myself (with Poison Resistance, natch) since it spreads out so much.

Mousing over a creature (and clicking on it?) will tell you it's resistances and vulnerabilities.

Its got that cyclic dive down and hop out thing going on, ala Izuna or Baroque, but is pretty simple and none too difficult once you get further in.

But it's in browser so gains massive points over those games!

    Quite a fun little distraction.

I just beat that game. You can kind of fuck yourself over if you beeline too far without escaping, because you won't have enough artifacts to survive very well.

Anyway, you know what's funny? Getting an insta-kill on the final boss. And I had like five big healing potions stockpiled in case he was difficult.

Ahhh this game. It's like a standalone version of that cave of trials in Lufia 2. They found my one weakness!

FYI: haunt is an extremely strong spell. Smite targeting to summon a bunch of nasties is incredibly useful, even if the target is resistant to the damage of the ghosts and things. Also, I found that pain dagger pretty early on, which let my slice apart living enemies pretty easily. I wanted to find an unbranded quick blade to slap pain on that, but the artifact dagger had to suffice. Kiku air mailing corpses was a nice touch too, especially when he gives you hydra corpses. Never underestimate the power of a 20 headed hydra zombie.

Mummies were sort of an interesting change in pace too. Without potions I had a lot less escape options, but I could hide and rest back to full health whenever needed without the threat of hunger. I had a few decently close calls where blink scrolls and such saved me.

I probably could have gotten more runes, but I felt much less comfortable fighting nasty demons rather than nasty undead and living monsters.

    Savant on
