No, people buy iPods because people like being hip. People love the white chords dangling from their ears and others seeing it. It's almost like a social contract of sorts.
And the "hipness" spread down to rural areas, and now we're stuck at this junction of all mp3 players being called iPod, and because of that it sells based on that alone.
I've always hated the interface and scroll wheel, so I've always invested in Sansa, Creative and now the Zune. Creative was my favorite prior to the Zune. I really do just like the Zune. It's almost a social statement in a way.
GoldAgainstTheSoul, I'm an iPod user (30GB Video), and I think the Zune looks pretty cool. Not all iPod users are anti-"M$" or retarded, as you call them, "ifanbois." Though, I noticed in your list of things that make the Zune a better mp3 player, you listed a bunch of stuff that doesn't matter if all you want is ... an mp3 player.
Sure, the Zune screen is nice and big, but larger, crisper album art pictures don't make your music sound better. I guess if video playback is really important to you, the Zune is a no-brainer. But again, that doesn't make it a better music player. [/quote]
i dont agree.
i love album art, especially when i digitalize my CD collection to a HD
I love finding art and putting it in the tag and having it a part of my mp3 experince. I think it does make for a better overall mp3.
also, i think the sound is better than the ipod
also, i listed durable and i think thats very important for a portable device.
the zune is a juggernaut compared to the ipod in terms of how much punishment it can take.
and i dont like using software based off a mac system.
Why?
Because it's slow as fuck? Seriously, don't start up iTunes if you have an old computer. You will be sitting there for about 5 minutes.
Yeah, I'm not hip on installing a new music program that will take over all my MP3s and possibly re-encode them or whatnot. I still use Winamp version 1.1 or some shit and it's nice and neat and small and does everything I need music wise on the PC.

Then, and I say this with as much politeness and tact as a man responding while listening to the Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers theme song can, you are FUCKING INSANE.

You didn't actually disagree with anything he said.

Oh, I'm obsessed with album art as well. All of my music was tagged with album art, but I still went and updated all the album art anyways (with 600x600 images), just so it would look better when browsing in iTunes using CoverFlow or whatever they call it.
But when I'm listening, I don't give a shit how large the art is being displayed, and for someone who's not interested in video playback, that is the only advantage the Zune screen has over the iPod.

Rebelling against the ipod people.
Also, mac commercials piss me off. Poor John Hodgeman.

you're kind of trying to twist the argument around.
you say the screen has nothing to do with a pure mp3 players ability to play mp3s, and then say you have a ipod that plays movies and you dont care about movies.
i don't get it.
and i only use the software to sync the tracks. if i wanted to browse album art i'd do it on google image search.
its not the only advantage considering it helps make the interface better.

He's seriously trying to say that having album art makes his music sound better.
I think what he means is that the aesthetics of art makes it feel more complete, and often times aesthetics can make the pleasure of listening to music better. He's not saying it makes it sound better, just that it makes the experience better.
and incidentally, they both have hard drives in them so you better not drop either one
the difference being the ipod will break and the zune won't.

exactly. i was referring to his comment that i listed things that make the zune better that have nothing to do with mp3s. i didn't agree with that.

Much like how there is not a non-movie-playing Zune, there is not a non-movie-playing iPod in the 30-80 gigabyte capacity range. Therefore, even those of us who care little about movie playing have devices with this feature shackled on, as though it was a comical steel ball keeping us from escaping the clink, or perhaps even the hoosegow.
...Wow, I need to stop reading Tycho's news posts when I'm half asleep...It fucks with my head.
whats that got to do with the zune being more durable than the ipod?
you know there are hard drives in both?
also, show me proof that the zune is actually more durable. i'm interested now.
Simply because of the materials it's made out of, it's less likely to show superficial wear.
That's all I got without going into too much conjecture. All I know is that iPods are pretty durable and Zunes aren't exactly dropping like flies. I don't think it's an issue with either, so throwing around "more durable" is silly.

ok, go and drop your hard drive when it's spinning up
I've dropped mine twice already, and both were quite large drops and it's fine, hehe.
Well I've dropped my ipod 1000000 times and it still works fine.
My anecdote has a much larger number than yours.
I'm not trying to prove anything. You said go drop it...and I have. I'm just kind of providing a personal experience YOU ASKED FOR. You can't really chastise me for actually answering your request.

All I'm saying is, when comparing the iPod and the Zune strictly as music players, there are only 2 real differences. The interface, and the size of the album art.
There's no clear-cut victor in the interface department. Some people like the scroll wheel, others hate it. I don't really think either control setup is that much better than the other.
As far as the album art goes, both players can display the art on their screen, so does it really matter if your art is shown 1 inch wide or 3? Can you honestly say that slightly larger album art makes your player better?
No, people buy iPods because people like being hip. People love the white chords dangling from their ears and others seeing it. It's almost like a social contract of sorts.
I bought an iPod mini a couple of years ago, because:
a) It was the cheapest non-generic option (here in Australia anyway).
b) I tried out the UI, and really liked it. Much moreso than the iRiver and Creative players I was comparing it to.
c) It has a sturdy aluminium enclosure (which is still looking good after two years).
The main drawback I could think of about the iPod was having to use iTunes. But I started using it, and really like it. I've got Yamipod in my iPod root directory for those times when I just want to quickly dump a file onto it, though.
I also replaced the white earbuds with some much nicer Sennheiser ones.

1. if the ipod had a larger screen you wouldn't say that
2. that's like saying what's the difference in play a game on a 17inch monitor vs a 19inch monitor? the difference is one is better.

i dont agree that the things i listed have nothing to do with a good solid mp3 player.
Don't say I didn't try to warn you. Then again, the pummelling has already commenced, apparently.

I hate the fact hat I-pods will be a hunk of plastic once the battery gives out.

I've dropped mine twice already, and both were quite large drops and it's fine, hehe.
and everybody i know has had an ipod break.
the zune is pretty much indestructable.
there is even a video of some idiot taking a hammer to it and he could bearly break it.
take a hammer to an ipod and see what happens :P

eat it.

It's slow as shit on my system too. It locks up all the time in the marketplace for a few seconds.
