dhalsim has a few important elements - use the longer strikes like s.hp, s.mk, s.mp to poke at them from a distance; use b.mp or b.hk as anti air; instant air teleport; etc - but the most important thing, the absolute most important thing, is how to zone an enemy away when they're jumping towards you, and staying out of the corner.
also remember that all your instincts for other characters are wrong when you're playing dhalsim.

To add on this, heres a small guide.
its important to have a very good understanding of all of dhalsims normals to play him well. I'll explain them below.
s.hp - the longest range of all the pokes and does good damage. Use this as a basic punisher for any whiffed moved. It is also very risky to use within jump in range though, because of its longer recovery most characters can punish you with a jump in if you get predictable.
s.mp - good poke to use when your opponent is out of range of your b.mk, but in jump in range. unlike s.hp, unless its a super early jump you will be able to atleast block a jump in.
s.mk - useful in the same range as s.mp, the difference being that s.mk will catch an opponent if you think they are going to jump. it also whiffs a crouching opponent at near max range, which is bad news b/c you need to be pushing your opponent out.
s.lk - useful when you want to interrupt the startup of a move or just try to annoy your opponent enough to jump, its very quick and has good recover but does little damage.
b.mk - this move has a deceptively long range and can be cancelled into lp flame, incorporate this move at around sweep range.
b.lk - use this when trying to push an opponent out if they get in on you, it has a fast startup, just remember b.lk, b.lk is not a block string.
cr.mp - must be blocked low. has a low to the ground hitbox, you will be surprised how many things it dodges.
jump back hp - must be blocked high. Use this in conjunction with cr.mp to mix up opponents who block too much.
df.lk - lk slide, since dhalsims movement speed is slow and his forward dash is horrible this will be a good way to move forward(ideally you want to have your opponent at 80% screen distance away from you). also will travel under many fireballs. can cancel into super.
df.mk - travels farther than lk slide, but riskier
as far as anti airs go there isn't one that you can use in every situation.
B.hk - this is the one you will probably be using the most. It is good when you opponent is jumping far, but will trade will certain jump ins (trades are never in your favor as dhalsim).
b.mp - this is good when the opponent is directly over your head. it can cancel into yoga fire, abuse this.
s.hk - this is great for >50% screen jump ins, does pretty good damage, but will trade will about every jumping normal in the game.
cr.hp and cr.mp - These are very situational, see ultradavids dhalsim anti air thread on srk
j.mp - very good air to air limb. Great against characters with floaty jumps.
ex upflame - this is a great GFTO me move. it knocks down. use it a lot vs gief and rufus. In other matchups its usually best to save meter for super.
super - Use this when the opponent jump in far, use the hp version when using it as an anti air (more inv frames). This can be very scary for your opponent when you have it charged and often you can get away with throwing out your limbs.
Ultra - good anti air when your opponent jumps in air, although it will almost always trade. Follow up with super if your ultra lands.
Lastly its very important to be patient when your opponent does get in on you, try to read your opponent and block, back dash, teleport, tech throws, b.lk, and super accordingly (use lp version in this case)
Dhalsim talk reminds me that I'm pretty sure what I taunted over that one time was a crumple stun on one of his reach moves and I was too far away to do anything else. It was pretty great though : D
dhalsim's b.HK is one of the best anti airs i've seen. i've never seen it trade when spaced properly. but i find that i often space it entirely improperly and thus trade.

it even beats bison's EX headstomp.
it trades with boxers far early j.hk and giefs far early j.mk to name a few
What's a 'frame trap'? Is that like the previously-mentioned Sagat's uber safe c.lk / c.lp?
If I'm not mistaken, a frame trap is when you force your enemy to block a move that recovers quickly, say Rose's sliding cr mk, then you throw out a quick move with a lot of priority and a good hitbox, like Rose's cr mp, which then stuffs many of their possible counterattack options.
For example, Rose can force you to block her slide mk, then:
cr mp xx fireball if mp is blocked for chip
cr mp xx soul drill if mp connects
OR she can also throw you if she does the slide kick deep because she has frame advantage.
So you are using moves with advantageous frame data to set up other moves, thus trapping them into either blocking or getting stiffed if they try to wrong counter.

Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.
What the hell is wrong with G2. I just beat a Ryu who had twice as many GP as me by Soul Reflecting until super was full then doing a jump-in super. Twice in a row. How the fuck did he even make it out G3-E and how am I still G2-E.
And there are flowchart Kens with 15 thousand GP. Jesus.
a frame trap is basically a move that leaves you with a frame advantage - you recover a few frames faster from your attack than he recovers from block stun, that is - enough so that any attempt he makes to throw out a move will be stuffed by a high-priority or fast move.
for example, dictator's c.lk > scissors leaves dictator both characters at even frames, so they recover at the exact same time, but if you've been pressuring them, they might try to jump or roundhouse or whatever. anything like that will be stuffed by the next c.lk. however, a shoryuken that is invincible on startup will beat the lk and make the dictator player feel angry.

Yeah I've run into a few people that are clueless, but man is it ever better then G1. It's night and day, I didn't feel like I was getting better at the overall game in G3 really, G2 I can see improvements all the time.

I have literally no idea how some of these people got out of G3. One guy didn't block ONCE the entire match and had something like 7k gp.

Ehh some people just go "bullshit!" when they lose and just keep playing the way the play. If they still beat you, you just need to keep practicing so you can react to their crap, just cause it's crap doesn't mean you shouldn't prepare for it.
I HATE champ mode though, there's no point in playing random people for only one match and then never seeing them again, real improvement happens in player matches that last for an hour+
On a side note is anyone planning to go to MWC 2010? Shit is hype
Lobbies are going to be so fricking amazing, the only drawback being we'll probably need 2 or 3 lobbies for all the PA people when it launches. Playing Final Fight last night has gotten me excited for Cody and Guy.
I am willing to bet we will see a great variety of lag conditions in SSF4 lobbies. I never really noticed it in HDR, though I was informed by ChaosHat that HDR was based on the vastly superior GGPO platform. Are we gonna be doing East Coast and West Coast PA lobbies?
Yeah, I didn't leave out of desperation; I had to take care of the dogs. Getting beat is fun as long as it's in HDR.
Make sure you get that headset issue worked out by launch. PA lobbies won't rock as much without a mic.
Yeah... I may have to just switch back to the EX2 until I can figure out what the goddamn problem is... Is there any way to just have a controller running as essentially an extra headphone jack while I'm playing with the joystick? Or does anyone know if there's a quick and easy way to fix the TE stick's jack?

I'll join a lobby, just got my new mic. Though I have to wonder how comfortable people are with shittalk.
I mean, I tend to do it from time to time but I've stopped because I've noticed that some people tend to be a bit more sensitive than others and can't take an honest ribbing.
However, I will talk mess...and when I lose, I will talk mess more.

Judging from first hand accounts of some of the guys at PAX East, they are all business. Me, I'm gonna talk mad shit whether I win or lose, a lot more if I lose. Hopefully the guys around here will ease up and remember it's just a game.
Here's a preview of what to expect from me. Start at the 2:55 mark.

I have a newer headset that has a standard connector (2.5mm I think?) not the big goofy original one. I've tried it with and without the dongle; doesn't seem to make any difference.

I haven't played many games with PA folks, specially SF since I'm in pretty deep over on the SRK boards. It'd be great to another fun group of guys to play with. Maybe you could even stage a forum competition with SRK, like gamefaqs did :winky:

When random gives me Dhalsim, it always ends up with me in the corner praying. I do not know how to yoga.
You attempt to put both heels behind your head, arch your neck downwards, and see if you can kiss your stretchy ass goodbye.
I actually like Dhalsim in HDR but using him in IV is more or less out of the question for me.
