Am I the only one that's tired of playing games and wondering "why the hell would they do that?" Why won't BLOPS let you set killstreaks across different classes? Why can't I put two attachments on a secondary? Etc.

All of the decisions in this game, for better or for worse, are at least being explained to us. There's no Jedi hand-waving, and I don't expect to like everything about this game, but at least I can see their decision process and their passion. It's not just "well it took 2 days less to code it this way" or "you think we tested that? loltesting." I can actually read/hear developer and designer decisions about WHY the buffs work the way they do, WHY they wanted healthbars, etc.

Regardless of whether you agree with every decision, you have to get some kinda nether-region nod for a company that's passionate and communicative enough to share some insight on the design process with you.

I definitely appreciate transparency, but in the end it's not the wondering that gets me. If there is an issue with a bad or annoying mechanic in a game, hearing the problem they were trying to avoid by implementing it isn't going to make it any better: it just means they haven't yet found a good solution.

That was just an aside, btw, it seems the conversation is kind of trending towards game design in general and away from Brink itself. Is there a game design thread?

Did they explain the health bars? Because that seems like a weird thing to do without it being a perk you equip. Although everyone does so fast anyway, maybe it's not a big deal.

I don't care what developers think about the features they put into games. If they talk about something they are putting in a game and I like the idea and the reasoning behind it, I get excited about the game. Everything I've heard about Brink, and the reasons behind those features, I like and agree with.

Exactly. What matters is whether we like the game, not whether the developers of the game like the game, and especially not whether the developers of the game say they like the game. The proof is in the pudding, although in this case we're not allowed to taste the pudding before buying it, so instead I'm going to have to read about what other people think the pudding tastes like.

Totally agreed, except I'm willing to put down the money and get a taste for myself right away. I paid $0 for enemy territory and got more good times out of it than most games I paid full price for, so if brink doesn't pan out I'll call it even with splash damage and move on.

This is basically my thinking too, but given their record I think it's a pretty safe bet that it will be, at worst, passable.

Yeah, I don't have many worries either. The only things that give me pause are this whole unlock thing which seems to be geared more towards people who play games to earn XP than people who play games to win the round, and SMART, which I still haven't quite seen a simple, effective explanation of. If both of those work out fine, though, this looks pretty sweet.

Then again, they might pull a Crytek and turn 180 degrees away from everything they've ever done right (although that's not a totally fair analogy because a 3rd party dev did Crysis 2's multiplayer and I hear the single player actually isn't awful).

I don't have the source, but off the top of my head I believe it had to do with the fact that it allowed for them to do semi-regen (a la COD) within a pip, but having multiple pips meant that you couldn't go down to 1 health and then hide for a few seconds and be no worse for wear.

I remember reading somewhere else that it gave them greater control over body size balancing as well (again with the regen issue, giving a class multiple smaller pips played differently from giving them one larger pip).

...but the exp system focuses on things to help you win the round, so either way people are trying to win.

SMART is just a system that makes sure that any object that looks like you can climb up/over/under, you can climb up/over/under.

Yea i'm getting this game. Gonna be a heavy soldier and sell my ammo in dark alleyways for a reasonable fee. My second character is going to be a heavy op, because it's easier to hack computers with big guns. This should be fun and i'm glad they got rid of the whole sniping thing. I'll be getting it for the 360 of course.

I was on the fence for a while with this game but they really cater a lot to teamwork. So even if you have a bad day, you are still going to get exp and help your team out. I think more FPS games should work toward this line of thinking and start rewarding teamwork, rather than some douche in the back corner with a sniper rifle. Anyone have past problems with Amazon? I want my psycho mask but I dont want my game to come 2 weeks later.

I think that SMART is really impossible to describe properly, since not many people have played games with systems anything like it.

One of those things that a demo would really help with, since people will most likely like it only after they get a feel for it.

I really hope they have my favorite style of gun, which is high damage, high accuracy, low ROF, no scope whatsoever. Like the Bauer in BF2142, or the G3a3 or M14 in modern shooters.

Oh, not that. How is having a health bar weird?

I meant in all the videos how when the player is shooting someone they can see how much health their target has. That's weird.

Several of the trailers show a bolt-action rifle with iron sights that seems to be a one-hit kill on small framed players, and headshot kills on larger ones.

My weapon of choice is a shotgun, and it doesn't look like they'll disappoint there.

Ah, roger. The healthbar is a departure from the de facto standard set by BF/COD these days, so I figured that's what you meant.

One thing I'm confused by in the videos is the iron sights. I see cool neon glowing colors like night sights to improve the sight picture. Is that customizable? There's different guns and stuff with different colors, it's a neat feature I hadn't thought of before.

There are no one hit kills. There are situations that can lead to one-hit incapacitation, such as a guy with one powerful semi-auto rifles getting a buff from the engineer and shooting a light who doesn't have a health buff.

SMART's not that difficult to describe: a contextual sprint/movement button that allows you to more smoothly traverse parts of the environment, such as mantling, climbing up and sliding under objects, while holding the button and looking at/running towards them. It's a lot like the auto-jumping from the 3-D Zelda games, only in first person and with more parkour.

Just a few weeks now. Can't wait to see how it all turns out.

That tells you the intent of the system. Describing the result is a bit trickier.

Does it feel fluid? Does it misinterpret your input at all? How sensitive is the context selection (looking up/down)? Is there a minimum/maximum distance to the object before it kicks in? What sort of timing do you need?

Whether someone like a movement system or not generally comes down to how it "feels". If there were more games out that did similar, you could start using comparisons. (Sort of like Game A, but with the jumping of Game B, etc)

I know I'll be going into the SMART tutorials that were mentioned as the first thing I do. It'd be nice to get the hang of it without getting shot at to start with.

Some of those questions are near-impossible to answer, or have meaningless answers. Does it misinterpret input? Come on. How sensitive is it? 18 sensitivity units. Min/max distance? Probably, I'm guessing 1-1.4 meters. What sort of timing do you need? I can't even think of an answer for that.

I agree, it's such an odd system that a demo, even just a tech demo as a proof-of-concept would go a long way. In the meantime, I'm just going to assume it's the same way Assassin's Creed works, but with the ability to go under stuff as well.

And that's why people generally describe these types of things by comparing to past experiences. It's not something you can generally convey in a description.
