Split screen is really a catch 22 these days. Developers are really pushing these poor consoles to their limit and major concessions in graphic fidelity and even gameplay have to be made to support two players on one screen. Sure, the benefit is increased sales from people who simply must have the feature, but it's often those same people who come back later and complain in forums about how ugly or poorly the game runs.
For developers, it's often just not worth the few extra sales to spend all that extra development time on something that people will likely complain about, bringing down the mindshare of the product.
I for one don't care how ugly they have to make the game in split screen to make it run. Lost Planet 2 is almost unplayable because of it but I still love it and thank the lawd it's even in there. I'd rather have immensely shitty co-op then none at all.

All we can take from that is the fact that you're a gamer who is thankful for what you get. Sadly, 95% of gamers are entitled asshats, and I've got a feeling devs know this.

Well yeah, but angry fanboys hate everything though.
Realistically that didn't stop split-screen co-op getting into Halo or Gears of War. I think it's more just that most devs don't see it as big a deal as it used to be. Or at least, lower down on the priority list when it comes to game features they need to work on.
I think this is relevant for Splash Damage in particular, because up until now, they've primarily been PC focussed devs, where (barring the extremely rare exception) split-screen is pretty much non-existent.

Unfortunately, THIS.
It's funny hearing in several of the videos that they're emphasizing character customization "as a way to show how much of a badass you are". The main thing that immediately makes me laugh is hearing a lovable nerdy Englishman say those exact words. It's not really fair to find it funny, I know, but I can't help it.
Also, it must be difficult creating a FPS where you want everyone to feel like a super badass. Not everyone is going to be out there with positive K/D ratios, so you've got to walk a tightrope as a developer to make even the poor players feel empowered. For example: I think, in the end, Modern Warfare 2 did a decent job of this. They took the account levelling-up feature to the nth degree and you always felt like you were being rewarded for playing the game, but on the other hand, the killstreak rewards really made it obvious who was playing the best in any game and who was mainly there to serve as kill fodder.
I just wonder how they'll handle it in this game, and whether it will feel rewarding to get out there and play over and over. I think back to the days of Wolfenstein: ET where you signed onto a server and started from scratch every game... it was a simpler time.

So can we assume then that the Xbox version will look and run a little better then the PS3 version because of this?

Couldn't say. Closest I could find regarding that was this post saying Brink won't favour any one platform.
I know that at Quakecon, Rage was shown off running simultaneously on PS3, PC and 360 in order to show that they were graphically equivalent or something. Only that's running off of id Tech 5, where Brink is actually running off of a heavily modified id Tech 4 engine (Splash Damage say that something like 1/3 or the original engine is left intact).
Basically, probably too early to tell, we probably won't know until it's out. I'm guessing they want to maintain as much parity between the console versions as possible given their comments, but then what developer doesn't?

This isn't their first console title however, so it's also quite possible that the console versions will be nearly identical. Plus Bethesda has put out 3 PS3 games now, so their expertise on the platform will surely benefit Brink. If there are variations between the console versions, I'm sure they will be very minor.
Though I fear that everyone, everywhere will want to play as Light Operatives, or something along those lines.
Anyone made a Steam group for the PC folk?
That's probably a good idea, given that it's a Steamworks game and we'll be able to make full use of Group Chat.
Help me think of names! All I've got off the top of my head is Fire Team Wang.

I'm just hoping this'll be a game that actually performs well on the PC and isn't just a shoddily ported console game as most non-Valve shooters are these days. Delusional, I know. Though the UI thus far seems quite console-centric, I dont see it being too difficult to use on a computer. The problem is controls. If I see one more key that does something I want it to do in some situations and the completely opposite in others, possibly costing me my life, I will rage. Borderlands pick up item/reload and BC2 arm MCOM/pick up kits to name a few.
As for Steam group names, I've got nothin'.
Also re: light operatives--as far as that goes, playing the sneaky, agile guy is fun, but I tend to get better results when using characters with few weaknesses and no immediate strengths. You're making zero tradeoffs, so instead of relying on your body type (in this case), you'd be mobile enough for it to make a difference and heavy enough to not die immediately. Feels like there'd be more room for actual all-round skill to come into play when using the medium build.
Could just be me that likes well-rounded characters, though.

That's cool, let them go bounding all over the place.
From what I saw of the game at PAX, it looks like Light Operatives die the second someone gets a bead on them. They need to stay mobile to stay alive, and while most FPS players understand this I don't think it'll be a huge problem.

Actually I think it is isn't it? They said they outsourced development of the console versions of Quake Wars to other people, and this is the first title they're really doing multiplatform themselves.
As for group names:
- The PA SMART-Alecs

- BRIGHT: Belligerent Runners in Gentleman HaTs
Could also replace with "Rascals", "Rogues" or "Rapscallions" and it'd still work. Or maybe replace "Belligerent" with "Braggart". The possibilities!
- DAPPER: Dashing Across Perilous Peripheries Exuding Resourcefulness

Did they? Hmmm, I guess I stopped paying attention to Quake Wars by the time the PS3 version released.
I really need to watch all the preview videos to see if any terms stick in my head for a Group Name. I do like the idea of an over-the-top acronym to compliment the silly S.M.A.R.T. naming scheme.

I officially endorse SMARTWANG now. Just at the proposition of having to explain to people what it stands for.
Police Academy
But the PC version was awesome and not enough people played it
Any of you guys still have it? I'd love to play again sometime. Or even the original ET.
Are there still populated servers up? When I checked a year or two ago, it was mostly bots
(I spent more time on that than I should have.)
The group's public for now. Join it. I must go eat breakfast.
Cant wait for this game.
