Wing Commander-esque games?

It just struck me today that I haven't played a good space-fighter "sim" in ages. I used to love Wing Commander and I played way too much X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter for my own good. I'd love to find something recent in that genre. Of course I'd be willing to bet that I also have the worst set of systems in the world for that sort of thing; a PS3 and Wii along with a low-end laptop. Are there any space-fighter sims left in modern gaming? If anyone can make recommendations I'd really appreciate it.

As always, thanks in advance.

My bad then, I thought by virtue of asking for advice it belonged here. I'm a silly goose.

    Thanks for the link BTW!

EDIT: and I failed to search too, many apologies.

That thread fails to mention StarLancer, which was a decent turn of the century space combat game that preceded FreeLancer.

Freespace 2 was really the end of the space fighter sim genre. I tend to think of it as being the same thing that happened to SimCity 4...

The core audience wanted a game that was almost unplayable. The next logical step after Freespace 2 would have been a game with FS2 quality story, graphics, and polish, but with I-War / B5 style inertial flight.

Some of the games in the "Present" section have moderately positive comments, such as Evochron Legends and Starshatter. Starshatter isn't strictly space fighter sim, as I understand it, but I think you can choose to do that if you want. Some of the genre games coming out of Eastern Europe are kind of dire, I hear.

Also, I think the Wing Commander Standoff fan project isn't mentioned in that OP, and it's supposed to be pretty good.

Actually this might be a long shot but you also might enjoy playing Mechwarrior games. The last I hear there are free versions of the latest incarnation available online

I do loves me some Mechwarrior...

I'll take a look at the other links as well, many look promising. Thanks everyone.

It's funny that you bring up Mechwarrior though, I was leafing through A Time of War (the actual book, the link is for the quick start rules) and thought about how much fun it would be to play an Aerospace pilot, which in turn brought me to space sims

It's really good to see that space sims are not dead. Maybe hibernating a little, but not dead.
