WIP...
doodled this up tonight, kind of not sure how to go about finishing...
RA, i can see the ideas (like depth and trees and mist) clearly so you are on the right track. I'm no digital painter so no advice but as a spectator, i see it and i suppose it just gets more refined over time
a buddy of mine is opening a clothing store back home so i've been meaning to try doing a couple shirts forever, finally broke the seal on illustrator. WIP here gotta clean some stuff up still..
edit - ended up finishing this up as well, face was ref'd off a photo of my bro
Axim, the thumbs up on that guy looks kinda odd when placed like it's comming out of his neck. Of course it's not easy to fit a thumbs up inthere, when it's cut just under his neck, but I think I'd look better if you angled it as if he held out his elbow to the side and the thumbs up came in from the side, the back of the hand facing us. If you know what I mean?
I'm pondering about this sketch of Catwoman I've knocked up, since I need a collection of ideas and crits before I go ahead and ink this bad-boy. The background obviously needs work, but I'm more worried about the human figure - so, yeah, mucho' Catwomano' crits please.
Any hints/tips?

entry: i hear you man, though i didn't mean for it to be anatomically in position as its kind of like face + hey thumbs up, but if i have time it wouldn't hurt to redraw it at a plausible angle
tam: yeahh i was going to fix that but got lazy i'll redo them before i print it thanks
frak: looking good only crits are that the light might fall on his clothes a little broader than you've drawn and the right side of the cloak could probably use some creases in the cloth as well. keep posting
I think the problem here is that your swirls aren't swirly enough. Did you use the pen tool exclusively? Everything looks a little artificial.
I think your problems are common to most people first starting illustrator. There seems to be an assumption that its most powerful tool is the pen. This is not the case. Take your tablet and draw naturally with the pencil tool instead. Set the fidelity higher to smooth out your line work and just go nuts. To get the best results out of illustrator, I've found its more productive to adopt as natural a method as possible. Treat it like any other drawing, and don't get bogged down setting out hideously complex paths with the pen tool.
What irritates me about inking with the pencil tool in Illustrator is that I always find myself clicking elswere when I'm done drawing a line, otherwise I risk having my line disappear when I start my new line.
very interesting. i once did a self portrait with the pencil tool (the assignment was to use the pen tool...). requires much more concentration but it's much less frustratiing. i think I'll try this one with then pencil and compare...
but with my pencil tool usage i find that i can't close things and always want to go back and make sure they're "solid"
I found some of my old images on my PC - here are 2 I made... the lizard guy was my very first attempt at coloring in PS Not terrible... but after seeing the plethora of talent here, I definitly see it in a new light - I really need to get some new things on paper
The building seems kinda wonky, outside of its comically lopsided nature. The logs from two different walls are viewed straight on, while the roof is being seen from slightly above.

yeah i'm not happy with the swirl are either, i think my problem on this one was that i used the pencil tool exclusively but drawing these long bendy swirls then having to travel back down the line to close it and give it some width is pretty brutal with the tablet. i can tweak most of it through pencil tool editing and the push/simplify tool but it's not the same as just stroking a line plain and simple. i find just stroking doesn't give me the look i'm going for on these swirls, and i already have the fidelity at around 1-2 .
a lot of it seems to be my trying to make the swirls complex as you mentioned, i have no idea how you get the lines so uniform beside each other without really heavy post work with the control points! i think i've got to start thinking more about where i am going with the end product rather than just drawing and seeing where it goes, on top of figuring out the best way to do these lines..
anyhow thanks for the crits!
re: magictoaser, what i do if i still want the ability to edit lines after the fact with the pencil tool is after you do a line and are happy with it control-2 locks it so you can draw the next line without worrying about it clipping to anything around it. ctrl+alt+2 unlocks them all when you need to go back and change things.

Hi-5.
I said the same exact thing in another forum, except stated that it looked like Jesus was modelling for Calvin Klein.

Number 2: Try not to use stroke. Draw the lines with the pencil tool set to fill so you can vary your line width.
You know what I'm talking about, Moss?
My recommended settings for the pencil tool are:
Fidelity 1
Fill New Strokes: On
Keep Selected: On
Edited Selected Paths: Off
but with my pencil tool usage i find that i can't close things and always want to go back and make sure they're "solid"
