I'm playing the sniper and so far at least 3 big battles have been won by accidentally glitching the AI and having them stand there and spam a close range ability while I shoot them in the face repeatedly.
Which is alright, because when they behave normally I get chewed up. I think sniper was a bad choice for solo play.
It's pretty much: try to get a headshot, if you don't back pedal while firing your pistol, maybe get a bird in there.
You probably know to do this already, but look around before you start trouble. If you're lucky, a high ledge will keep most of the opponents far enough away from you that you can still snipe. Also, you may want to keep a low-power grenade with you for grenade jumping. Perhaps practicing with a sticky grenade so you can stick it to a wall then jump above it before it explodes.
That's fairly ridiculous. I know it's possible. But. They've got rockets. And you don't.
Truthfully, in nearly all instances, machine gun > rockets. Just keep moving and he probably won't hit you much at all. I usually take out the other vehicles first, because if your car gets destroyed you can still beat Mel on foot, with some luck. If you happen to have a good machine gun or launcher, or better an explosive machine gun, you can cause Mel ridiculous damage as long as you don't get run over.
Mad Mel co-op was..interesting. We both lost our vehicles nigh instantly. Then it became a game of cat and mouse. Eventually they'd manage to get us into down mode, and we'd end up all over some asshole's grill.
OK, just started this game for the first time. I'm on PS3.
I chose Roland since I figured he was the most general class and I'm guessing I'm a rifle and shotgun kind of guy, but the more I read about this game the more it seems like you can actually mix and match the guns with the people more than I thought (Mordecai doesn't have to be snipers and pistols only, etc.).
I'll probably be playing this solo the whole time (I'm assuming the PS3 community is the smallest and my home life prevents me from playing online a lot (no set gaming schedule, need to be able to pause for long stretches at a time to deal with kids)). If any class can use any type of gun, what's the best character to choose for someone who will probably be playing this solo and would like a more general play through (i.e. not specific in any one area)? I'd like to do a little of everything. Roland's tree looks co-op heavy. Would Mordecai or Lillith be better? I'm not that interested in Brick.
You can solo with any class. Lilith and Mordecai both have special abilities particularly useful for soloing (Lilith's get-out-of-jail-free phasewalk and Mordecai's pet). Roland is absolutely viable, although the long cooldown on the turret as well as the need to position it correctly does make it harder. And Brick is Brick: Doable, but with skills more suited to melee, which makes some boss encounters very hard, or explosives, which you generally don't find until later in the game. Check the OP for more detailed info, including links to the skill trees.
Basically, play what appeals to you. And you might throw up the - I'm getting on to play, anyone around - flag in here from time to time. Borderlands solo is great, but coop is even better and worth making an effort to try out.

Looking through the skill trees and watching a youtube video or two online, I think I'm going to start over as Mordecai. Lilith's tree seems to be the most generic weapons wise, but her ability doesn't sound that interesting (she seems to turn more melee, which doesn't appeal to me). Mordecai's stuff is pretty centered around snipers and pistols, but in my brief time with Roland, I was very disappointed in the accuracy at the beginning of the game, so Mordecai's accuracy increase skill looks good. Also, since Roland's first rifle couldn't hit the broadside of a barn, I was using a more accurate pistol more, which I liked.
Bloodwing seems cool, and I like the idea of headshotting all the enemies from far away with some tricked up sniper rifle, so I'll try Mordecai out tonight.
I'm currently a level 20 hunter with a high-firerate sniper that does 238 dmg, an explosive shotgun that does 27x12 I believe (with 2x explosive) and a harpoon rocketlauncher/explosive smg. Is anybody around my level willing to add/play me in XboxLive?

Her ability allows her to get out of trouble at the blink of an eye. When you use the ability it freezes time and regens her health (if you have the skill). It's easily the most useful ability in the game.

I wish they came out with a copy of this game with all the DLC to date as a Game of the Year or some such pack.
I like Mordecai's sniping of course, but I would kill right now for a level-appropriate scoped revolver. Way better against those damned melee opponents.

Yeah, it's an excellent panic button if you spec for it. Health regen, damage while phased, dazing while going in and out and damage reduction when coming out of it. All those make Lilith very tough to kill. Unless you're in the Dahl Headlands...
Oh, but it doesn't stop time. It just speeds you up a lot.
I didn't find a scoped revolver, but I got the next best thing, a scoped repeater.
I've been finding a lot of nice SMG's, but between the pistol, shotty, and sniper rifle I just don't have a use for that 4th slot, which is currently holding a mediocre rocket launcher.

I played as Lilith first, and after using her, everyone else just feels so damned slow. I mean, I know her ability wasn't meant as a means to travel quickly, but I used it for that all the time.
Heh, I'll bet it was even worse if Intuition had points in it.

Lillith's ability is:
- Defensive (-70% damage taken when you emerge)
- Crowd Control (aoe daze on entrance and exit, weird animations play when your target is dropped like skags opening their mouths)
- Regenerative (hp)
- Offensive (explicit damage, spark, gets you in range for phoenix)
- Spammable (miniscule cooldown reduced by killing people)
It is quite literally EVERYTHING. The reason lillith is unbelievable good with a shotgun is that she doesn't have to run up to people. She appears next to them, taking 30% damage, having destroyed their shields with lightning damage while they couldn't even damage her, burning them with phoenix and dazing them. Then after she's shot them she's IMMEDIATELY back in phase walk.
Doing the circle of Duty as Lillith is so trivial it's comical.
I've been thinking about buying this, since I haven't bought a multiplayer PC game in a while. Are there lots of people still playing this? Is it easy to just get into a public game and play with random folks?
Does it take FPS skill to play? Or are the stats the most important part?
In short: Yes, yes, yes, no but gun stats are still very important.
Player skill will be key to getting critical hits, finding cover, and general situational awareness. There will be times when you'll find a new gun that's basically the God of Death with a trigger, and you can run forward with little regard for your safety because you're killing the world. Most of the time, though, you'll have to play smart, stick together if you're playing mutli, and not get into too much danger at once.
You need to be able to play an FPS well. You can't just stand in one spot and shoot everything as if on a merry go round.
But gun stats are the most important thing, but they are tuned so that the period of time where you are just blowing up everythings face instantly tend to be minimal. However, the game does reward such beatdowns in the form of enemies bodies exploding in fun and exciting ways, and a class or two get XP bonuses for critical shot kills.

Yeah, I just recently bought this during the last sale and am playing the hell out of the main story. As soon as I finish playthrough 2 I plan on picking up some of the DLC. Me and my friend play almost daily for at least an hour. Feel free to add me and jump right in.
As far as difficulty goes - if you are soloing and doing all of the side missions you shouldn't have any major problems, as you tend to stay adequately leveled. If, on the other hand, you jump into a game with some friends who are not all at the same level, get ready to have your ass handed to you at least a few times.
Finally got around to getting this on Steam, I have always wanted to play it but had alot of games to catch up on first, let me know if anyone wants to play, would like to find a static group to experience the content with and play through the DLC. Also ChuckNorrisTypeR on Steam.
Edit: is there a PA Borderlands group or anything? if so let me know, not seeing it on the steam community, If not I would be interested in starting something up.
Edit 2: nvm found the group in the OP, didn't see it at the bottom =/ if anyone wants to invite me to the grp I would dig it.
The only problem I ever have with Lilith is that Phoenix and the AoE effect when she exits Phasewalk will blow up barrels and deplete your shields. I really need to pay better attention.
Is there a decent amount of PA'ers still playing this for the PS3? I had it for the 360 and had a blast with it until my 360 RroD for the third time and I decided to get a PS3 and I never bought Borderlands for the PS3 so I would definitely go pick up a copy this weekend if I knew there is some frequent co-op going on.

Well, I've hit the level cap in the vanilla game, so I'm probably going to grab the expansions at some point. At this point and time though, I'm just roaming around trying to find weapons.
Got to hop in for like 30 or 40 minutes before I started working, so far I'm loving it!
I have been wanting something like this in the MMO market for years, the EQ/WOW style of game just doesn't seem to work for me anymore. With this type of game questing is much ore simple, PVE is a lot more dynamic, and it is PVE that rewards player skill and that is something I have not seen in a long long time.
Sure you could sit there and rotate spells for 20 seconds until something dies, or you can just blow its head off and go to the next mob, I prefer the latter!
Anyways I'm going to hussle and get my work done so I can jump back in. I think I will cancel my WoW sub as well

Yea, I don't think another WoW style game is going to become the all elusive "Wow Killer," you can do so much more with a different style of game and make it so much easier to port to console. Once the controls are much less cumbersome and can be played on a few keys or a controller, you can start to make much more exiting encounters, people move with a controller like it is an extension of their body in MW2, that would be useful in PVe encounters, say instead of "Dont step on that thing" there could be conditions like getting to cover before a bosses AOE goes off or w/e.
Anyways don't really want to get on that topic right now, this reminds me of Hellgate London in a good way, I liked the idea of Hellgate but as we all know what came in the box wasn't quite how we imagined that kind of game playing out.
Jesus are we in a drought. How about some news on DLC 4, fixing main game scaling post-Knoxx, or even BL 2 at this point. C'mon Gearbox, throw us a bone!

How is Mad Mel even remotely beatable in single player without exploiting the ramp for line of sight?
Oh and I tested it while PL'ing Mordecai against Mad Mel. Two shots from a lvl 61 soldier and he got blowded up good.
