I honestly don't know where else they were supposed to put the gap. Every other place I can think of is more likely to have your hand bridging it than the location it's already in.

Bottom and top. Unless you cup your phone like some sort of chalice... those would be in a much less obvious spot.

Seal the antennae with some sort of coating like someone was saying earlier.
Top and bottom are probably better, just because your hands are there less often, and you don't make calls holding it like that.

But it's a phone, first and foremost. Those three things don't necessarily need reception.
Anyway - He said hold it different... but at one hour and 8 minutes into the keynote, he holds it like the rest of us plebians.
coming from a 3G, this phone is amazing. i have no splotches/lines/ and i cannot reproduce the antenna problem

So I've been watching this reception thing with interest, since I'm planning on ordering my phone next Thursday, and if it was really fucking things up maybe I ought to reconsider, you know?
I've come to the conclusion that I don't much care. I use about 20 minutes of talk time in a given month, and I'm absolutely not brazen enough to carry around an iPhone without a case, having broken my 3G in a drop. I was also holding my 3GS earlier and decided my natural way to hold it won't cause the problem people are having.

Yeah. I mean I assumed insetting the antennae slightly and putting a thin clear plastic strip on top of it would solve most problems.
How it slipped through testing is fucking stupid though. All the test phones must have had those 3g fake covers.
The biggest design shock for me though is how shatterable the thing is now.
I don't seem to have the reception issue. I can get it to lose one bar if I use the whole palm of my hand. It certainly doesn't just cut out when I'm holding it normally
Sucks that it seems like a issue a ton of other people have

Got to the Apple store in Portland, Oregon at 2:30. I was in line for 4 1/2 hours before I finally got my phone. When I left at 7ish, the line was still 5 hours long. They were planning on staying open till midnight. This was for pre-orders.
I honestly don't know where else they were supposed to put the gap. Every other place I can think of is more likely to have your hand bridging it than the location it's already in.
If there was nowhere else to put it then scrap the entire design because it is fatally flawed
It is a problem when holding your phone means it can't get a signal

Many other phones have the same setup and issues, they just don't have the blogger hardon of the iPhone.

I'm a right but I hold my phone lefty... and I'll repeat for your benefit that I have tried my darnedest and the best I could manage was to reduce the strength to 3 bars in a position I would never take a call in.
If I were Steve jobs right now, I'd handle myself the same way.

those phones are ALSO poorly designed, then.
i'm sorry, but when a cellphone doesn't get cell reception, that is a serious design flaw, not something to just shrug away.
I mean, if you bought a camera that only took pictures sometimes, would you be okay with that?
It's a real shame, because the iPhone 4 actually has a decent aesthetic to it.
There are videos of the exact same problem happening with the original iphone, the iphone 3g, and the 3gs.
The fact of the matter is, if you wrap your phone in a big ball o' hand meats with no regard for the fact that it is a radio frequency device, you will lose reception.
The only answer to this is an aerial antennae.
Do YOU want a big plastic extensible antennae coming out of your iphone? no? then don't hold in this one specific way that causes problems with some people in some areas but not everyone or all areas or all phones, or get a hands free set, or use speaker phone, or get a bumper guard, or get a non-apple case, or have your skin coated in non conductive silicon polymers, or get the phone coated by one of those scratch resistant coating companies, or just vote with your dollars and don't buy apple products.
I bought the phone, I find myself physically incapable of reproducing the phenomenon in the videos.. to me, it is a non-issue.

Maybe our bodies are just not very conductive. I wrapped my hands around the phone completely, and no drop in reception.

I don't think anyone is denying that, just pointing out that due to the design and materials used, some people's hands may be electrically detrimental to reception in addition to simply covering the antennae.
I wouldn't mind an extensible antenna, maybe it would improve AT&T's shitty coverage here.

One of the Gizmodo guys already broke his iPhone 4. I want a bumper now more than ever. The store sold out of them way before I got there though. Hopefully they have some in the next few days.
So I got my iPhone 4 yesterday and got it activated just fine. Everything was great! I didn't have the reception problem or yellow lines, and I got mine delivered.
Then this past afternoon I took out of my pocket. The phone was warm and didn't respond to button presses. I held down the power button. Nothin'. I held down power+home for 10 seconds. Nothin'. I plugged it in and did the same, and then the phone showed up in iTunes in "recovery mode".
I thought I was in luck! I'd only had it for a day, so my backup from yesterday was still good! I eagerly restored it! I waited to download the 530 MB firmware, and then it said it was restoring my phone. And then I got an error! Error 1601. Apple site says I need to do a fresh reinstall of all Apple software.
I do this on separate computer to make sure I don't lose my backups. And then I got Error 1601 again.
I've made an appointment at the Genius Bar for tomorrow, but is there anything I can do in the meantime? I feel like I'm out of options.
Edit: My last idea was to let the battery drain all the way, and then plug it into the wall. 10 minutes later, I heard the familiar "plugged in" chirp and my phone finally reset itself and was alive! Looks like I'm in the clear for now.
So like I posted I got the 3G microcell yesterday too due to shitty reception in my place. The thing pumps out 5 bars and works awesomely. Lets just not get into how crazy it is that I have to get one and pay ATT to get better service via some other service I already pay for.
I can replicate the issue to by bridging the gaps from 5 bars to searching for service. The only ok thing on my end is that when I hold the phone normally I basically pinch the top sides so no issue. Landscape mode though is going to be the problem.
Well guys 30 day returns are available from AT&T if you aren't pleased and the Droid X looks pretty cool.

Ha, that's great.
It's been great going back to a lot of apps I had tried but given up on because they were either too slow or not really ready when I used them on the 3G. The NYTimes app is a good example - I tried it for like a week when it first came out, but it was slow and crashed all the time, so I never bothered going back.
Can anyone vouch for installing the new iPhone OS on the 3gS?
I've heard in many cases that users are experiencing a slower phone than before. Could just be hearsay, but I thought I'd ask before I update mine.
Mine is much snappier, or so it seems anyway. I did have one issue: Visual Voicemail didn't work after updating. But I simply requested a new password from AT&T for voicemail, and it reset my voicemail, allowing me to set it up again. Works great now.

Anyone have experience with a good set of earbuds? I'm annoyingly picky about my style of earbuds since they spend most of the day in my ears, and the bundled buds are famously uncomfortable. I've been using the ones I used with my old iPod (Sennheiser CX300s - love them), but I'm really feeling the loss of physical buttons on the device so I need the cord remote control.
My list of wants in a headset include:
-decent sound quality (i'm not an audiophile, but I tried a pair recently that was just atrocious)
-remote control/mic with volume buttons (volume buttons aren't as important as the answer/end/ff/pause/play button, but still nice) on one of the ear cords rather than at the y-connector (too far from my mouth for the mic)
-asymmentrical/j-cord design (some people hate this, I like draping the cord behind my neck when I take the buds out)
-reasonable manufacturer's warranty (sennheiser has a 2-year replacement warranty, which I've used twice. I'm not rough with my earphones, but they're out in the open a lot)
-in-canal design
-cheap (i'm cheap)
I've searched a lot, and there don't seem to be any that fit these criteria (not that I'm surprised). The closest I've found are the Skullcandy 50/50s - no j-cord, and I don't know about the sound quality, but they seem to be the closest I can find (Shure makes a pair that definitely has better sound quality, but they're over $100). Plus it looks like if they break they'll either replace them or give you half-off another pair.
Anyone have suggestions for a better pair before I go buy these (they seem to be only available online and at Apple Stores)?
