Still waiting for The Last Starfighter Game

Seriously. I think its time to bring this back out... whatever happened to the original?

That cabinet would grace many a basement if it were to be made available.. and i won't dare think on a modern revamp to both the movie and game...

Oh the potential!

Heh, coincedentally I was just thinking the SAME thing after watching the Last Starfighter again on sci-fi a week back, I searched and found the same thing! It's pretty sweet, they did a decent enough job with it.

They so need to remake this entire movie. Give it the Battlestar Galactica treatment. less camp, more grit.

Hell i'd take a direct to DVD release even.

Because...all of the characters were turned into hot chicks?

I was thinking remake as well, hilarious...maybe some of us are all getting a wee bit too old.

It could be good, although they'd be hard pressed to find a more roguish character than Robert Preston. Still, the effects would obviously be nice. Watching the movie again though I realized how pathetic the invasion force really was...I mean hell, it only took one starfighter to lay waste to their ENTIRE armada and their flagship. Granted, they used an experimental weapon but hell..what if they had two or three of them?

But what are people seeing in the Last Starfighter? We're talking about a movie where a kid was really good at a video game and blew up an alien armada in a lone fighter craft. The '80s are over, and I don't think there are any overarching themes that can be mined out of this IP. A gritty version of the Last Starfighter just sounds like a pile of fail to me. The first time the movie brought up cyberspace or VR, I think my brain would just shut off.

you must remember that the part where he single handedly destroyed the armada was in the last 10-15 minutes of the film.

There's a whole slew of characters and intergalactic politics that can be covered before that.

Man, I should go see if I can rent The Last Starfighter on DVD or something. I love 80's camp. But for some reason lately, every time I watch a movie, I end up dreaming about it.

I watched Back To The Future a couple of weeks ago (in HD, bitches), and dreamt that all my friends had time-traveling cars, but only used them for mundane shit, like driving to someone's house, and arriving at the same moment you left. Watching a few minutes of Freaky Friday and V For Vendetta resulted in a dream about switching bodies with some teenage girl right before her birthday party. V showed up. Every time he walked by, I was like "What up, V?" And he'd take out a sword and cut off my hand or some shit. I felt really bad for that girl.

I guess I need to watch the Last Starfighter and play a hentai game in the same day, just to make it interesting.

Is this sarcasm, or serious? Does the world really need another Star Wars universe where every single D-list character in the movie ends up with a background history as long as my arm?

I mean, seriously, if the movie isn't about an Earthling who gets recruited and ends up being the last starfighter pilot and saving the benevolent space alliance from the evil space alliance, then why not just start over and make a new IP?

Well, to use BSG again, they pretty much had the same thing, save for a battlestar and an alien armada, so....I'm sure you could easily expand the drama concerning where his lifes going, make the frontier less 'friendly' or obviously good, perhaps give them a darker edge so that he's not sure if he's really working for the good guys or not. Maybe their a bunch of space dicks or something. Wouldn't be hard with Centuari. Maybe make the game not arcade based, say it's put out on a planets console systems, or through the internets, etc etc. Maybe have the starfighter lose the first time then get away. Hell there are a dozen things you could do. (Sidenote, first person who posts a pic of a space dick wins the thread...the challenge is to make it SFW)

Yeah, technically you could always redoe it to a new IP, but it would be nice to retain the originals themes, names and perhaps design influence.

    Greatest spoiler ever.

And as far as making the Last Starfighter into a series, all you'd really have to do is extend the conflict and increase the size of the Armada. Make it a prolonged battle between the two sides and you should have plenty of space to work in.

Well, BSG has an advantage insofar as it wasn't titled "The Ragtag Space Fleet Searches for Earth". When the entirety of your IP is a movie called "The Last Starfighter", it seems like the options for a remake are rather more limited.

And, again, I'm asking what central themes people saw in there that would be at the core of a reimagining. I thought that the "teenager saves the universe" idea had gone out of style, but there wasn't a whole lot else there.

The Last Starfighter could lend itself to a regular series... there is enough material going on...

And a full arcade cabinet with this game is just sexy..

I haven't even mentioned "Cloak & Dagger" as another movie needing a remake, and there are even talks of a game coming to fruition.
