Computer problems

Ok, I have encountered a computer problem that I just cant figure out.
My machine locks up every minute or so. Basicaly I cannot "click" or interact with any programs but the one I am working on at the moment. Sometimes everything locks up, and I cant interact with anything (mouse cursor still moves). Temporary fix is to ctrl-alt-del to get that system task windown and close it... once that is done all is good for another few minutes.
Now I was thinking a virus or spyware. AVG did not detect anything (it happened before it became a paid prog) and search and destroy did not find anything at all (altho it fialed to update at startup).
I am at my wits end. I assume it is something software based since the temp fix is basically opening a window.
I have a memory load and Cpu load widgets, and I dont see any spikes during these "lock-ups".

...help?

Try SpyBot Search and Destroy and/or AdAware in addition to your AVG scans. A secondary Antivirus scan might show something too, I like http://housecall.antivirus.com.

Additionally, what are the specs and how old is this computer?
