Well, that Liara/Shadowbroker thing might be coming someday, maybe! Although if you don't like Liara and/or shadowbrokering that may not be much to look forward to.
As badly as I want to play ME3 right goddamn now, I hope they take their sweet time with it. I don't care if it's six discs, things unresolved by ME2 can be forgiven largely by the expectation of ME3, so I want them to nail everything for every possible outcome. Like, thirty different endings.
Right now, even with no information, I'd guess that Tali and Garrus are almost a lock to return as squad mates, the others.... I'm not so sure about.
The problem is that they can't bring SOME squad members back. They have to bring them all back, or none, because no matter which squad members they choose, there will be people who have that particular combo dead.
Well, let me clarify. They can have only some squad members returning within the story, but they have to write all of them into the game because say they choose to bring back Miranda, Jacob, Tali, Garrus, and Legion (those being the only ones who really had ties to Shepard and no one else, or who weren't dying). There will be people who have those five, or four of five, dead. So they need other squad members to replace them, that means either they need new squad members who only show up if some of your ME2 squad is dead, or they need to write every ME2 member in to cover people with dead squad members, or they need to have some people having returning ME2 characters if alive, and others having to make do with new ones from ME3.

or....
those who kept some alive get those squaddies they kept alive
those who don't just get kaiden/ash/wrex/liara
i'd like it if they didn't write entirely new characters in ME3 just to fill out your squad. that way your losses in ME2 actually have heft. i'm not saying i don't like new characters - i do. but i don't want arbitrary new characters put in solely to cushion your ME2 consequences.
I think the best way to handle their difficult dilemma is to let BioWare choose whoever they want in ME3 as a squadmember, and if they died in ME3, they're simply not in the game. No replacement character, no long-lost-twin-of-Garrus, you just miss out on that character and the recruitment mission.
I imagine something like, if everyone but Shepard died in ME2, you have a maximum of 4 squad members in ME3. If everyone survived, you have 10 to choose from.
Because if you let Mordin die, you deserve to be punished.
Speaking of distended pouches, I'm playing BG2 for the first time and I think I know why Pancake applauds the love interests aspect over ME2's take.
I really liked what BG2 tried to do with relationships (and incorporating your love interest into that vampire side-quest was pretty neat), but I found that my options as a male were a little lacking. I don't hate Aerie like some people do, though I never found her super interesting. Unfortunately, my other two choices were an evil bitch (Viconia) and a stuck-up bitch (Jaheira); so I figured I'd choose the one that wasn't bitchy. I would have much rather romanced Nalia, but she wasn't an option. Oh well.
Right now, even with no information, I'd guess that Tali and Garrus are almost a lock to return as squad mates, the others.... I'm not so sure about.

Okay, let's cut that list of characters down even further and say that only Miranda, Jacob, Tali, and Garrus return as squad members. That leaves us with four Squad members, let's also say that the both Liara and either Ashely or Kaidan will return as a squad member, that gives us six, that will be a small, but reasonably sized squad, the squad in ME1 was the same size.
However, if Tali, Miranda, Jacob, and Garrus are all dead then we would need four new members to have that reasonable sized squad. So Bioware will need to create, at least four new characters to replace the others if they are dead.
The way I would do it is this, if all the previously mentioned characters are dead then you only get a squad of six just like in ME1, a squad that would be made up of the returning characters from ME1 and the four hypothetical new characters, but if all the previously mentioned characters are alive then you are rewarded with a much larger squad, made up of both the new characters and the old ones.
Wrex can die, too, so the only safeties are Kaiden/Ashley and Liara. You have Ashley and Liara in your game and you want to be prepared with tech for some synthetic enemies while playing, say, an adept? Too bad!
What are the chances of Bioware potentially giving people no squad flexibility as punishment for a previous game? I declare: no chance.

Well, I was actually referring to 2/3rds of the male romances ultimately resulting in pregnancy. I'm finding the conversation options so far to be as extremely obvious as they are in Mass Effect, though. Almost every conversation is broken up like this:

When I look back at having just six possible squad members, it seems so tiny to me. However, Bioware could probably do with just introducing three or four new characters to round out your squad abilities or give you new diplomatic options.
Imagine having to do a loyalty quest for each of the races or factions in the galaxy as opposed to for each party member. The quarians want intel on the geth. Then, the geth want some alliance AI research. Meanwhile the alliance wants the guaranteed safety of new colonies, and cerberus wants you to steal some weapons tech. The list goes on, the council, the batarians, mercenaries, and other groups are available.
Then once you deal with each faction, you gain a new personal friend to drag along with you in your party. The story should justify any new characters being introduced. You already have an awesome team at the end of ME2. Just needing to replace characters shouldn't be the only bonus to picking up new personnel.
Also, Carth is a kath hound runt.

Garrus - If he's alive, he would be sticking with you. He's a bro. Tali - If she's alive, she'll be sticking with you, too. Unless you were a dick and gave that evidence to the admirals, but in that case she's probably dead. Thane - He's dying, remember? By the time ME3 rolls around, he's dead. Mordin - He's pretty old, but we aren't going to have him die off-camera. He'd be doing some sort of science somewhere. Samara - She's free of her oath and is off soloing blue vampires again. Jack - She's not really into the whole "hero" business. She's going to cut and run eventually, even if you made her all lovey-dovey. Grunt - Probably would stick with you... unless he has to do something for Clan Urdnot and would only show up with Wrex/NotWrex during the Krogan cutscene. :P Legion - Takes his mobile platform back to the homeworld for repairs and to collate. Will show up in Geth cutscene. Jacob and Miranda - These two would probably still be around, since they are part of your crew and didn't get recruited from elsewhere. Zaeed - Job's done, he's off for his next paycheck. Kasumi - Job's done, off for the next big score.
So of the twelve we started with, only four really have both motivation to stick around with Shepard and can't be hand-waved away with a "gone off on X sort of mission" so you only get an email from them or whatever.

GAH! Was not expecting BG2 spoilers in ME2 thread, damn you!
ME3 would not need to give you replacement characters for ones you foolishly let die. For one, ME2 did not use a system similar to ME1 (where in ME1 all party members had a large array of skills and were each roughly equivalent to a specific class that Shepard could be so you could fill any role). Instead, Squad members only had a handful of powers and as long as you have the general bases covered on stripping defenses the rest are technically fluff.
Besides...
Even if you got a bunch of people killed, you are still guaranteed Ashley/Kaidan, Liara, and the two surviving ME2 members required for Shepard himself to survive. Throw in 2-4 new characters and that means you're guaranteed to get a squad of 6-8 and cover all needed roles regardless. Those that actually saved everyone however get rewarded by having them available as well.
We also know they'll at least be getting the voice actors back for the romance characters to finish out those plot threads, and if the first two games are an indication the romances take place on the ship and it wouldn't make much sense for Garrus or Jack to be on the ship and not be a squadmate.
Lastly, wasn't there some board of things Bioware wanted for ME3 and "Same Team!" was up there and circled or something?

As for the
pregnancy
aspect, yeah, I always thought that was a great idea. Adds a lot of weight to the relationships that have it. Unfortunately, I still haven't gotten around to buying Throne of Baal, so I haven't gotten to experience that development personally. Maybe I'll pick it up from Amazon or eBay after my semester finishes.

I don't know about the whiteboard, but your argument rings true. I suppose it depends on how they structure the combat side of gameplay. They can, in theory, give everyone a wider array of powers than ever, or separate the powers across a wider range of characters. Depending on how they call that shot, we could end up needing less or more members. Meanwhile, we wait and see.

Booooring. I need the DUNKA DUNKA DUUUNKA DUUUNNNKAA DDDUUUNNNKAAA of Soldier, the facebashing of Vanguard, the facemelting of Adept, or the brain-venting of Infiltrator. I'll even settle for the "Go shoot HIM" of Engineer first.
Yeah, the Sentinel suffers from having a passive class skill, so it's doesn't do much to change the playstyle (or at least offer much in the way of playstyle like say, warp bombs, brain venting, or Krogan impersonation).
So I am about 20 hours in to my first run on this game. Some quick questions that maybe you guys can help with. I will spoil them for the sake of not possible screwing anyone.
Is it possible to get Ashley to join you? She was all pissed about Cerberus and just left for me.
I pissed Miranda off after defending Jack. Is there any way of getting her to talk to me again?
Also I boned Jack, does that end all her conversations with me? Because she wont talk to me at all and it has been a while. I'm about to go through the Omega 4 Relay.
And it seems like I can romance Tali. Thats possible? Can I do so after having hooked up with Jack?
Is it worth it to be upgrading the hell out of the Normandy? Cause I have for the sake of doing it, but if it does not effect anything then I dont want to waste the resources.
I came late to the game with concern to playing this but it has been highly enjoyable. Oh and is it normal that I get so little ammo for my pistol? I mean damn, I have an insane amount of ammo for my sub machine gun, and even my heavy weapon ammo stays fairly well stocked.
I am playing as the tech+biotic class if that matters. And tech armor rules when you max it out. I noticed myself dying much easier without it when I forgot to keep it up.

Ashley (and Kaiden and Liara and Wrex) won't join you.
If your Paragon or Renegade is high enough, IIRC it's possible to talk to her and get her to see your way of doing things. Or if you had a high enough paragon/renegade you can scream both of them down.
Jumping into the sack with Jack as a quick fling will get her to tell you to fuck off afterward. Take it slow and she'll stick around.
You can hook up with Tali. Dunno if it's possible after hooking up with Jack though. One of you mansheps wanna chime in?
There are three essential upgrades you want to do for the Normandy; the rest aren't necessary (but will make your life easier...if you don't mind a buttload of mining to get them).
You want the armor, the guns, and the shields.
Pistol ammo is pretty scarce. Use the heavy pistol as your anti-armor weapon of choice and for long range sniping; for regular stuff stick to the SMG.
SkannerJat, as a counterpoint to Orca, I'd disagree with his three essential upgrades (and I'd suggest that you don't read his second spoiler if you haven't already). Instead I'd suggest, as it's your first playthrough, to just go with your gut after doing some research ingame, and see what happens. There'll be a few points coming up where you have to make important decisions, but for your first playthrough I'd strongly recommend that you just do what you feel is right. There are 'right answers' we could spoil you with, but half the fun of your first playthrough is making mistakes
Thane - He's dying, remember? By the time ME3 rolls around, he's dead.
They're not going to do that. Either ME3 takes place within 6 months of ME2 or he gets cured or he lasts surprisingly long. Any way, they're not going to off a love interest off-camera.
Even if you got a bunch of people killed, you are still guaranteed Ashley/Kaidan, Liara, and the two surviving ME2 members required for Shepard himself to survive.
Lastly, wasn't there some board of things Bioware wanted for ME3 and "Same Team!" was up there and circled or something?
You beat ME2 with two party members. Difficulty: they're Zaeed and Kasumi.
Also, I can't remember, but I thought at the time the "same team" was referring to the development teams they had broken up to deal with parts of the game, since early on there were photos of some of the crew as "my team." If it is squadmates though, there's still the difficulty that they can all be dead or unlikely to return, which necessitates sufficient new party members.
Just finished my first playthrough of ME2. I played a 80/20 Para/Renegade Vanguard and had a real blast. I was also very satisfied with my ending.
I intentionally avoided all the stuff online about the game until now. I've realized that I was playing Vanguard "wrong", but in a way that was actually really pretty effective.
I would start every fight with a sniper rifle with inferno ammo and just clean house. I could 1-2 shot most weak enemies and given the rapid fire nature of the 2nd sniper rifle, could take down big guys pretty fast too. Once there was 1-2 enemies left I'd just charge/melee them to death. For mass melee fights I'd just use a single wide shockwave at a choke point, which would literally 1 shot every melee enemy in its path.

I was being sarcastic, Juc. Gosh.
If I never have to watch it again, I'll be happier than Shepard is smug.
Which means that Jacob and only Jacob will be available in ME3, even if he died.

Pistol ammo is pretty scarce. Use the heavy pistol as your anti-armor weapon of choice and for long range sniping; for regular stuff stick to the SMG.
You would.
It was super awesome.
