The biggest deal about Ironhand's spritework is he's making multiple creatures/objects in the same tile appear. http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=53180.msg1221871#msg1221871

I guess I should have mentioned that. I figured people that were interested would read the thread as it's pretty short right now. But I'm glad you pointed that very important fact out.

d0rf12.jpg

That's Mayday's water tile and pillar he's using there. The smoothed walls look familiar as well, but there's only so much you can do with a smoothed wall. And the aboveground was RILLY dark. Might look better with the default color set, though.

Like his cloth. DEFINITELY like his additional rough wall tiles, and I may copy those over into my Frankentileset. There's a lot of underutilized tiles in the tileset, and it's nice to see someone use them to give the rough walls some variety. Will require some editing of the raws to take advantage of them, for which see the link in my sig.

EDIT: And I've just read his thread. And wow, he's doing some amazing stuff with the colors.

That water reminds me of the background to Gemini Man in MegaMan 3 ...in that it kills my eyes. They're like miniature Journey Escape spaceships.

I thought there was a planned separation between graphical tiles and text tiles so that periods and sex symbols could be replaced by gravel and bags without ruining the aesthetics of the menus?

Snake, Squirrels, and Frogs, done by overlaying two graphics.

otzo00.png

Varied mushrooms, all from 1 tile.

214yr84.png

Crab made from the spider tile with another overlay.

He's using all sorts of semi transparent pixels to blend colors and stuff... It sounds like fucking voodoo magic to me, but I cannot argue with the results.

This is going to be the best tileset.

No, what's actually happening is that he (effectively) has one image that can have two colors: one is a snake, one is a frog. When the color of the snake is black, it's a frog. When the color of the frog is black, it's a snake. When both are non-black, it's a squirrel.

Basically, it's just cramming more images into the limited tileset (or something, I don't use tilesets).

Thanks for the help guys, I'll have to experiment with some pumps when the opportunity arrises.

In the mean time, the random map generator has thrown me an interesting arrangement; on the middle-view world map these four choosable locations are a pair of volcanos and mountains placed diagonally. I chose the bottom left volcano, with access to the bottom edge of the top left mountain.

The mountain face is bizarre. This is what takes up the top third of my embark area:

###############
###############
###
######
###
######

and it extends upwards almost all the way into the sky, spreading out into circles with some overhanging spires I might be able to build into. plans plans plans. I wonder if I can have some siege machinery in them that might be able to shoot invaders for me.

Might have to make another save file just to see what the rest of this loopy mountain looks like.

Yes. Same with socks, boots, shoes, and other things that would naturally occur in pairs.

EDIT: According to the DF wiki:
Gauntlets are always made in pairs, one left and one right, but the quality of each gauntlet in a pair is not guaranteed to be matched to the other.

Likewise for boots, shoes, and socks.

If I understand correctly, you make two gauntlets for each single raw material consumed, making them a very viable trade good. One shell makes only one shell helm, but the same shell would make two gauntlets, etc.

Have you discovered the joys of the Job Manager screen yet?

Hit "j" -> "m" -> "q". Then type in "Plant Fiber".

The max quantity is 30.

Pretty sure this still exists in v31.xx.

You need to have a dwarf assigned to be the Outpost/Village/Town/City/Metropolis Manager, and he has to have an office.

You may also wish to reflect on the fact that your d0rfs don't care if they're nekkid. They get unhappy thoughts from wearing worn clothes, but once those clothes are discarded or fall into tatters, they don't get unhappy thoughts from not wearing any clothes at all. Again, this is 40d, but is probably still true in v31.xx.

Just great. My expedition leader (who also had a ton of medical skill) is useless now. He ranted and raved for shell and despite my best efforts the ponds ran dry of turtle and snailmen stopped coming. Once he failed, no less than 5 snail men show up and the water is full of fish. I think the game is mocking me.

So now I can't use the job manager or any other nobles until another guy is elected AND I have no skilled doctor.

Unless they changed things in v31.xx, you can assign anybody to the position of Job Manager. Just go to the Nobles screen ("n" in 40d) and reassign the job. Job Manager doesn't have to be the mayor.

Does anyone here know what kind of waterflow is required to move items, and is this dependent on item weight? Because I envision a flushing system where my goblin killzone is cleaned with water after each siege; water would be released from a reservoir above the hallway, hopefully flushing all the crap (and blood and vomit) down a hole at the other end of the corridor. Water would be pumped back up from the level below and all the items would be atom-smashed with an automated pressure plate system that responds to water level.

Being able to flush down live goblins would be a nice bonus, but I want the option to just kill them with traps and military and grab any items I might want first.

Water pushing items is dependent on the depth of the water, and how much total water is trying to move. The reason for this is the way the game creates 'flow'. Water doesn't really flow, it teleports from a deep location to a shallow location. Items only move if the water they are sitting in is picked to teleport into a neighboring tile.

So if you got an item in a river of solid 7/7 water, it will never move. If the item is in 4/7 water and some of that water moves into a neighboring tile, the item will probably move. It's very pressure sensitive.. if too much water is moving at once, the item will get completely ignored and never move.

I suppose I'll just have to try it then, for science. The biggest problem will be finding enough water I suppose, as my entire map has like 3 tiny murky pools and I'm already draining one of them into my well cistern. Guess I'll have to find and pump water from the caverns.

Flushing items is tricky since only horizontally-flowing water will push items, and even then it can be picky. I'd suggest that, rather than attempting to push stuff all the way down a corridor, you instead install a gutter along one side of the hall, with the water source on the opposite side, like this:
█.+++X≈█
█.+++X≈█
█.+++X≈█
█.+++X≈█
█.+++X≈█
█.+++X≈█

As xzzy mentions, you'd still have to be careful not to put in too much water and pressurize the system. You could try using the diagonal wall trick to kill the pressure from the reservoir, I suppose.

Another thought: do you have an aquifer? It might be interesting to try using that as your water source rather than a reservoir.

EDIT: No aquifer and no stream or brook? Good luck with that...

That's clever, using half as many pumps as you'd think at first to reduce the water inflow. If I were you I'd do it with pumps, particularly since you'll have to reuse water due to your limited supply, which means you'll be pumping it either way.

Just for fun, though, I imagine a setup like this:
██████████████
█.+++++++X~O≈█

███████┼██████

with a reservoir feeding into the dark blue tiles and using diagonal columns as pressure baffles would yield similar results.

The one thing you DON'T want to do is run the atom smashing bridge as in the video with a limited water supply, because the water will be smashed too. You'll need to flush, drain, and then smash.
