Okay that's a pretty fucked up thing I hadn't seen yet:
Kobold gets her belly cut open in a fight, but doesn't die. Her guts pop out, and she's wandering the map with two tiles of grey vomit looking stuff trailing behind her. Not bleeding, not in pain.. she's just got a trail of intestines behind her.
Okay, now it's even more fucked up. Same world, same fort, just 4 or 5 years into the future. Same kobold shows up, and she's still dragging her intestines around behind her:
You'd think in the years since I last saw her, she would have maybe gone to see a doctor, or maybe sewn a leather pouch to carry them around in.
edit - damn, she died. A human caravan guard skewered her. We will sing stories about you, kobold.
Just had my latest siege last night. I had seen exactly ONE ambush this whole game, and then out of nowhere, SIEGE. yay! I got lucky in that I now realize that my drowning kill room was NOT set up right. This gives me time to get the levers straight. Sadly I had to rely on my cage traps and I got about 90% of the siege in traps. (Small siege). What shocked me was when it happened. I only had 60 some odd dwarfs. In the old systems sieges came once you hit 80 dwarves. Wierd.
I'm not working on building a death arena for some hands on training...and to give my awesome doctors something to do. Between the five of them, I have at least one high master in each hospital job. Many overlap.
So, this brings me to my questions:
1. How do I make notes? Need to label my levers. (I do intend to colour coat them)
2. What is the process to strip a caged goblin again? I still cannot figure it out.

1. (N)otes.
2. Place the cage, put a dump order on the cage using the designations menu. Then (q) on the cage and remove the dump order on the cage itself. Your dwarfs will come and strip the items from the goblin, but leave him in the cage. I suggest de-activating other dump sites and having a garbage pile active right next to the gobbos so you can quickly retrieve the items and go about your merry way.

(d)-(b)-(d)
Then use (k) to look at and use (d) to undump the cage itself.
EDIT: I just noticed you're placing the cages, so yeah (q) is right. But why placee them when you can just dump from the stockpile?

Because I then hook the cages to levers, to let the goblins out for my mans to squish, silly Kris.
I never got around to disposing of my caged gobbos. I started building a drowning trap but kept getting distracted and forgetting some important part and having a disaster. The first time, it was forgetting to roof over the ramp from the channel that connected it to the water, so they all just climbed out. The second time was forgetting to lock the doors before pulling the levers, leading to them rampaging through my fortress. Then I started a new fort.
Alright, I finally decided to check this game out today and I've been enjoying it for a couple hours now, going through some "getting started" guides and tutorials etc. but I have one problem that is only going to get more annoying later:
...can someone please explain to me how the save system works (or doesn't, as the case may be)?
Every time I save my game and reload it, it puts me at a random point around 10 or 20 minutes BEFORE I actually saved. Effectively losing the last thing I was working on every time. I looked in the folders and made sure to load the most recently edited folder, nothing. Tried deleting all other folders besides the one I need, just to make sure, and still nothing.
Do I just need to sit idle for half an hour before I save and quit? what's the dealio?
Yeah, it all works just like it should (or appears to). But the Save folder itself is dated and saved at around 20 minutes before I hit the Save button.
For example, earlier I saved at around 7:30, then went into the saves directory and the most recent one was from about 7:00, at which time I had not saved at all, nor had the season changed around then. It was the new save I had made, no doubt. It was just backwards in time a bit.
...maybe it has something to do with my clock? I dunno, that's my best guess at the moment since I'm pretty much completely ignorant of technical computer things.

Well, my PC's time is the same as the time on my cell phone, so I assume it's pretty accurate.
I extracted everything to desktop. Though, the version I downloaded came with a pre-built world already made in it and a texture pack installed. Maybe there's something wonky in there messing it up.
I'll download a different version and try that tomorrow, see if that fixes it.
So I've been away for months after losing a fort to an early save bug with the 2010 version, but I've been feeling the old fortress pull. How is stability these days?
On a side note, many many many pages back people briefly talked about steam traps. Is there a way to generate steam now without a 1 time obsidian cast shot? The wiki didn't list any. Would love to have some nice steam walls.

I just made the jump from 40d to 2010 the other day. Most of the super annoying bugs have been fixed, and the military works now (You'll have a hell of a time figuring out HOW it works, but as long as you read the wiki you'll be fine.)
I got attacked by another fun forgotten beast. The last one was a great dissapointment...but this one...whoa. It was a giant turtle wrenched into a humanoid form that had a nasty spittle. 19 dwarves died before a swordsdwarf took it out..and it busted a door out that ultimately lightly flooded my magma forge room.
Bone bolts bounced off it's shells and steel axes only glanced off it's scales. Finally the swordsdwarf cleaved it's head in twice. Yay!

if it is a giant turtle that is walking around like a man how did the dwarf reach its head to cleave it, toady needs to address these issues so we can have our dwarves murdered even more.
or the 'giant' turtle was just man sized which is still kind of frightening, but not nearly as frightening as say gamera

“Hello, gamers, look at your game, now back to Dwarf Fortress, now back at your game, now back to Dwarf Fortress. Sadly, it isn’t Dwarf Fortress, but if it stopped relying on cutting edge graphics and switched to immersive gameplay, it could play like it's Dwarf Fortress. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a cave with 6 other Dwarves just as crazy as you are. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s a carved bone figure with images of enthralled Dwarves gesticulating, covered in spikes. Look again, the carved bone figure is now a Legendary sock. Anything is possible when your game plays like Dwarf Fortress. I’m on an elephant... run.”
all I want in DF is mouse support, it has to many damn menus for keyboard navigation

After playing Goblin Camp I actually disagree. Lolpinions and all, but I found myself wanting more keyboard support, and was quite annoyed by the mouse.
So, Im really confused. I got immigrants, it zoomed on them, but they appear on a totally different looking map. Did they come in underground or some shit like that? How do I get back to normal gameplay?

Are you sure they're not just on a different z-level?

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

I'm pretty new to this, but I believe they appear at the edge of your "zone" (where you can't move the camera any farther). It can be hard to figure out where they are in relation to your fort, espescially when they can be almost anywhere in the Z axis, depending on geography. Just unpause and follow them to your fort because the are definitely going towards it and nowhere else.

I know it ain't instant, but in the past it's been allot ALLOT quicker. All my cats are still strays and I'm at like 30 dwarfs!
I shouldn't complain....

I shouldn't complain.... all those kittens provided just enough bones for my dwarf child's strange mood. Kitten bone axe... yes!
That said my recruits suck... they couldn't take out a deer with two broken hind legs.

You're hitting escape then selecting 'save and exit' or whatever, and it says saving, then takes you back to the main menu, right?
