The vast expanse of this game concept cannot be put into words. It is a game that is both different and the same each time you play it, and in truth never really ends. Your computer will hate you for it though, as your asking it to essentially simulate an entire world real time with text.

That said, my first time really looking at this thing - and man that is one heck of a piece of work. =)

DF actually has a pretty unusual learning curve.

It'll start off looking like a brick wall but once you've got a few things down it becomes very very easy to simply wall yourself in and play in peace forever. Then you'll start to experiment with crazy constructions and ideas and the real depths of the game becomes apparent.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

Ok Z level change is < and > right?

I built a downwards staircase but I can't seem to go down a level. What am I doing wrong?

**EDIT** Alright I managed to go around that using ctrl 5 and shift 5. I THINK I can see where the stairs come down, but my dwarf wont dig down there.

Help me to strike the earth!

Build or dig an upward staircase (or an up-and-down staircase, if you want to make a multi-level stairwell) on the level below, and they'll link.

Then, you can mine outwards from the stairway on the level below.

Press d then i and put the cursor where you want the stairwell(s). Press enter twice for that one square. Press enter and then arrow over however wide you want the staircases to be. Enter again.

Press Shift+> to move down 1 level. Mirror the stairwell on this Z-level. The two stairwells will link. Press (d)esignate for the menu, then (d)ig again for dig. Dig out the hallway/room you want from that stairwell(s).

Or continue to make stairwells on each Z-level down to "Dig Deep".

    Now I have a question.

I've heard of embarking on a good/evil border. I hope (PRAY) that I found one?

On the unit list, I have Groundhogs running around. The next month I have skeletal hoary marmots. Since I've had live and undead units show up, am I on that threshold?

Downward stairways are pretty much stairway-shaped holes in the floor. If you want to actually use them to go down, you need to build an upward stairway below them. Likewise, if you create an upward stairway, you'll need to build a downward stairway above it.

The game is set up so that each tile actually consists of a 'wall' space and a 'floor' space below it. If all you're doing is digging horizontally, you'll clear out the walls but leave the floors completely intact, allowing you to stack levels over each other without any issues. If you want them to actually connect, you'll need to deal with the floor tiles separating them.

I think yes. It should work just like a cold/temperate embark where one half of the map is frozen while the other isn't so you should be on the border.

    2nd year of Zimreg -

So, my fortress is slowly bloating as it fills with more and more immigrants until it becomes unable to sustain itself.

This game is nothing if not a reminder that everything will fail eventually.

**EDIT** Interesting... I'm scrolling around plotting farms around my main above ground area, and I notice red rivers all over. I immediately shit myself and think I missed an eruption of liquid hot magma at some point.

No... it's much, much worse. A pack (herd?) of Gorilla's attacked and murdered one of my peasant dwarves that was moving wood and spread his remains all over... I mean ALL over 1/4 of the main z-level.

... I can hear the shrieking at night off in the distance... they are coming.

2nd year of Zimreg, winter -

Hearing of the demise of their lowly peasant brother, my dwarves have launched a campaign of butchery against all things non-dwarven, contrary to my wishes. I had hastily built some walls and gates to keep the savage Gorillas out. It never occured to me that I should have been building them to keep something far worse in...

My people have gone lord of the flies on me. The once-beautiful outdoor garden/meeting place has been turned into an altar to some long forgotten god of slaughter. In retribution for their loss, my savages have heaped a rising pile of sacrifices around the feet of the statues lining their altar. They gibber and howl and rut like animals in the offal, incensed by the blood (there has been a massive amount of babies being made lately).

Even their pets have joined in the madness, emulating their masters by killing all manner of creature and dragging the minute corpses into the sea of gore.

It seems only a matter of time before the citizens of Zimreg grow out of my control completely... the horror, the horror.

I played this game with vigor some year ago. I played a few "campaigns" but eventually quit. This game is absolutely amazing, but there were some things I just could not for the life of me figure out.

If you can help me, perhaps I will once again join the underground world of the dwarves.

my problems: I tried endlessly to barter. I would have a master skinworker or leatherworker with no skins or leathers, so i tried to barter. The trading envoy would come and leave and no matter what I had in my trading depot, nothing was ever bought of sold. My master whatevers would go mad and start killing people. My biggest issue is not having the materials for the random savants. I would make sure my mayor/manager was at the depot, I made sure my goods were in the depot, I made sure the depot was outside, I would do a huge selection process which I completely forget now, but I could never trade anything. I read the wiki, I asked on the forums, I could never figure it out. Does anyone know what the problem here might be? Is there a way to deal with these shellworkers for whom I have no shells? Should I send them to fend for themselves in the woods, or what?

Also, cats. Fuck cats. Tried to harvest their skins for materials for the leather savants and they overwhelmed me. Falling to zombies is one thing, death due to cat induced plague and mad geniuses is sad.

I... uh, not sure where to start with all that. I might suggest going over the video tutorials and skip to the trading parts or maybe playing the latest version?

Solution to cats: Cage 'em as soon as they pop out the womb. Keep one or two females uncaged; need only one male. Not sure if kittens are still bugged in regards to butchering (they used to give like nothing in return, last I tried/remember) so you could may want to wait until they grow into cats before butchering them.

Uuuuh... It seems there is something wrong with the pressure of ocean water.

I wanted to start farming so I build my usual farms->floodgate->corridor->ramp into the ocean layout. The instant my miner carved the ramp the ENTIRE LEVEL was filled 7/7 with water. D:
    Naturally, everybody drowned.

clearly this means I will be downloading DF

are there are particular addons or skins or whathaveyou that significantly increase enjoyability?

I played a very long time ago, and I don't mind the idea of some nice skins. I'm somewhat concerned that skins might cause some slowdown, since when things got cluttered things used to slow down a bit in the normal DOS-looking organization. Advice would be appreciated.

Mayday DF is possibly the most widely and prevalent version of DF.

Nothing wrong with diving into 'The Matrix' and learning to play through ASCII.

I would recommend downloading the DF wiki though so you won't have to be stuck constantly and unable to get online to find out what's what.

Skins are still not really skins, from what I can tell. It's still just editing ASCII into pictures which means even in Mayday's set, periods and commas are speckled ground and O's are stylized circles, and there are lots of other minor awkward bits. Small o's are rocks, but on the world map they're supposed to be lakes, so the lakes look like blue boulders. I find this incredibly annoying.

Shouldn't really be too hard. Locate said shaft to hell, wall it back off. That exposes the depth and location of hell. Dig down to the z-level above where hell starts, find a way to drain and subvert all lava..channel the width around the village all the way up. Remove the final block holding the village in place. Gravity will punch it through that single z level and they all get eaten alive by demons. If they survived the 100-150 z-lvl drop. :P
