I'm downloading a 2.3 gig file using µTorrent. It's very popular, it has 129 seeds and I'm showing 888 peers, but for some reason, my download speed jumps up to ~200kB/s and then back down to around 10-20kB/s and doesn't stay stable.
Here's what's on the µTorrent status screen:
Seeds
25(128)
Peers
60(888)
Down speed
79kB/s (rising as of now... no... now it's falling)
Up speed
48.5kB/sec, very steady
My connection is a cable modem with 6mb down, 800kb up and I've seen downloads in excess of 1.3MB, so why is it so slow?
Edit: I have UPnP on my Netgear WGR614 v6 router enabled, enabled in µTorrent mapped to port 39868 successfully (according to the Logger). I have ports 6881-6889 TCP/UDP forwarded to my computer and I bumped the maximum number of download connections to 200 per torrent (250 global max). I'm connected to about 97 peers and 36 seeds and my dl speeds haven't changed fer shit. I know my internet connection isn't maxed because I can still view web pages at full speed. Help!
Umm to me that sounds normal. Whenever i have torrented things the download speed is irratic. In fact P2P in general is like this for me. A reason i can sugest is that you a DLing from differant people with differant upload speeds at differant times hence the differing speeds.
I know that torrents are eradic and thanks for your input roman!
Some guy in the Netherlands was blasting me chunks of the file at around 180kB/s and some guy in Poland was hitting me for about 150, so I was getting around 600KB there for a very brief moment, but, like it always does, it peaked and then dropped and started from 0 again.
I took this screenshot:
Does this look normal? The green line is my download and my red line is my upload. The download peaks really high and the upload stays solid, then the download AND upload drop off to nothing suddenly and gradually rise back up. Is that normal???
Edit: This is not a one-time occurance, this is a recurring pattern.
Hmm, seems like there might be a problem with your router or your settings in utorrent. You might want to try poking around the utorrent forums - there's probably a more concentrated group of people that could help you at least with the application's settings.
You need to forward whatever port utorrent is using - in this case 39868. Also check Portforward.com which can help with forwarding ports.
