I think I'm spoiled on Sega All Stars Racing, since I'm still finding the handling to be not as good. That said, I usually adapt quickly to arcade-style racing games, so I'm sure that it won't be a problem after a week. The weapons, however... I still don't like the whole "get blown up, lose the tier 3 weapon you were about to fire at the leader" mechanic. Looks like they've made the shield easier to use, though.
Shield is your friend?
I mean, I don't see how you can complain about getting hit by weapons when it is totally in your power to protect yourself from it.

Maybe its because I'm playing Red Dead Redemption right now, but the load times in MNR don't really seem that bad to me. Of course, compared to a Rockstar game, any game has good load times.
So, at Lucascraft's insistence, I downloaded the demo last night. I played it for about an hour or so.
My thought is that this is a great, customizable version of Mario Kart yet one the one track we had, drifting just wasn't as important as a typical Mario kart level. In a way that is good because I don't want to play Modnation drift, I want to play Modnation racer.
I just don't know how I am going to choose between this and blur though. Seems like the hype is in place for both.

Depends if you've built up enough of your boost bar to do so. I will say that the shield seems to last a bit longer now, though. Plus certain weapons don't destroy your own weapon (the electric based ones, for example), so it's definitely more balanced than it was. I'm just spoiled with SASR though, as you can block most incoming weapons with about 3/4 of the items you pick up.

The creation tools? Awesome? The sharing and online? Worked. Graphics? Unique. Gameplay? Shit.
The camera was waay to low, and the carts just didn't feel like they gripped the ground at all. It was like racing on ice. There was also horrendous loading times.
Hopefully they improved it, but I'm going to way till they release a demo again/hear updated impressions.
Yeah, I can't take you seriously. I wonder what kind of games you actually 'do' like if you didn't nejoy Modnation Racers.

So the demo's out? Great. Great.
Like I needed more shit to play. Oh, PS3, you succubus.
Kevin Butler is the best thing to ever happen to Sony in terms of advertising
Could not agree more. And I've gotta say, I absolutely LOVE the idea that they're releasing a custom Kevin Butler mod as DLC! You know everybody is going to download that on the 25th - which means, at least for the first day, that giant statue in the center of the hub that shows the most popular mod will be a giant statue of the Sony VP staring down on all of us in disdain. :P
Is there some sort of a boost-start like in Mario Kart? A few times when I've ran the race in the demo, an npc will have a little bit of red boost fire coming out of their kart at the start of the race.
If there is a boost start, what's the timing on it to pull it off?

Actually I agree, after playing the demo with my brother we both said we felt like we were racing on the ice level from Mario Kart. Can anyone tell me if there is any difference in handling between the different carts?
I'm hoping that its just the cart I used in the demo that sucks, because I'm really loving the creation tools in this game. If the differences in the karts is just cosmetic though, I think I'll have to give this game a pass. I wasn't crazy about the game controls, and I don't want to buy this game just to design tracks.
I definitely agree that the karts are a bit "slidey" but it definitely isn't like racing on an ice track. In fact, I really like how the karts kind of float on the track.
I'd say it feels more like being the puck on an air hockey table. There's not a lot of friction or drag. But that's not a bad thing. You just gotta get acclimated to the physics of the game. The floaty feeling certainly doesn't detract from the fun factor for me.
The karts all drive the same, yes. I actually prefer that. Races become more about skill, item usage, and knowledge of the track, rather than who picked which driver.
Would have been nice to have a solid 60fps for a racing game. I guess I'm spoiled with wipeout, but the framerate just isn't there at least in this demo.
The load times really do suck. I hope they figure out a way to drastically improve it. (Store the composted track on your HDD at least so that its only slow the first time.)
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I remember reading an interview somewhere earlier in this thread that they most definitely are looking at reducing the loading times with a post-release update.

Yeah, loading times are long because everyone is procedurally generated. They're going to try and reduce the load times though - just wasn't a priority before the game went gold.
Just picked up my copy ^^ bring on hours of customisable fun! Should see me through till LBP2 comes out

These seem extremely do-able. Must admit I'm looking forward to a solid couple of hours with this
1. The load times on the build in the video are horrendous compared to the new demo.
2. (At 24:15) There IS a race start boost mini-game, the delay between the last yellow and green is randomized and if you time it just right you can hit the boost button at green and get a big boost.
3. In the video there was an option when making your MOD to tweak their driving style, the sliders were for grip/drift, acceleration/top speed, and there was one other option I can't remember.
(Now that I mention it, I'm having trouble finding the point in the video with the driving style tweaks.)
I'm also going to be really disappointed if there's no old VW Bug or old Porsche 911 style bodies in the full game.
I fully expect a co-worker of mine to come in to work today saying the exact same thing. He knows a guy who breaks street date for him all the time. He had the collector's edition of Alan Wake last Friday and got Red Dead Redemption on Monday.

I remember reading an interview somewhere earlier in this thread that they most definitely are looking at reducing the loading times with a post-release update.
So the patch was the promised transfer from the demo to the main game, so anything that you make in the demo, you can now use in the actual game as well.

Well, my impressions were from the beta, which I think almost everyone around here was dissapointed by.
The demo has improved things, more noticibly the drifting, but the racing still feels a bit too slick for my taste. Nt to mention the camera still bugs me.
Spent a bit more time on the editor today. I've got the beginnings of a pretty good track laid down. There are a few things missing that I won't be able to add until I get my hands on the full version of the game, but what I've got down now is pretty solid.
I do have one question, however: Has anyone found a terrain flattening tool either in the beta or in the full version? I made some mountains and then later decided to move them a bit and the terrain where they previously were located is all sorts of messed up now. I need a flat terrain brush to just sweep over the whole thing and even it out.
Whyyyy are none of you UKers posting about the game! Arrgh.
See, this is why you people don't get games first. You totally let the rest of us down. :P
We're not posting because we're too busy playing it. Speaking of which, time to unlock more stuff!
Seriously though, the Career Mode Achievement conditions can die in a fire. "Take down 1 opponent using a Devastator"? All very well and good, until you consider that the guy you want to hit with one just activated it as he drove past, meaning you can't use it. "No wall hits for full race"? All very well and good, until you consider that EVERYONE tries to drive you into a wall whenever you get near.
Then, take into account that all of those require you to finish 1st as well, despite most races having the first set of unlocks requiring just finishing in 3rd. Throw in the strongest rubber band you can find, then turn the AI's weapons up to "rapetastic". That should give you a good idea of how frustrating some of these races are.
EDIT - Something I just found out during a Casual Race online - you can play splitscreen online. 10 racers in the room, and 6 were in pairs with the same name.

The load times don't seem that bad in the demo - 30 seconds is about the worst I've run into - but it sounds like it should be a non-issue very soon.
It took me an hour and a half to make mine completely...and that's with the few demo options.
I can only imagine how long it will take once I have the full range of options.
Still need to unlock better hair and better eyes, for a start. I'd say this Mod's about 85% of the way towards being worthy of an upload.
