I miss me some UO

Howdy all, so, long story short I miss Ultima Online. Specifically the economy and sim aspect of it all. Buying a house, legitimately being able to make a living off of mining ignots and refining them, with no need to step into a dungeon. All the cool jobs, the ability to play chess in the game, events, etc etc? essentially all the little details that made the game special and not about just clicking a button and healing yourself.

Are there any games that are seen as the spiritual successor to UO?

I really like the depth of Dwarf Fortress, but the graphics / interface are pretty steep.

There's a ton of UO shards out there that are still running strong. Take a look at the RunUO or top 100 lists, you'll find something.

Wurm Online, all the way. It needs a better interface, and to tone back on the grinding aspect.. but other than that, the game is amazing.

    Wurm is okay i guess
I suggest going back to the free shards if you want some UO, because nothing else will ever, ever itch that scratch, trust me.
i Know Angel Island has been around for years, just went down last year, is back up now with playerbase of ~200 unique users, has a very player-run economy, very involved Admins, good guys.
    UOGamers still run strong on UODivinity and UOHybrid i think, but I never liked them because I preferred pre UO:R Rulesets and am not a fan of blessed items, mounts, neon shit etc., but if you like crafting it might not be a bad spot;
In Por Ylem 2 is in... Alpha stages right now? no, Closed Beta I think.
Anyway, theres tons of free UO shards to play on, and no other game or mmo is going to satisfy that UO feeling.

Yeah, Wurm sounds about like what you want. You won't really be making stuff to sell, but to survive. It's really quite an experience (and one that's been calling to me again lately), but it can have a pretty steep learning curve too. A Tale in the Desert, like previously mentioned, is also in the same vein.

Despite being in spaceships in some ways EvE is the closest successor to UO. There are no levels or classes only different skills, plenty of mining, manufacturing and other things like that, and open pvp.

Sadly this is something I've given up on, like "college". You will want to go back but nothing will be the same.

Just throwing in a nostalgic "ahh yeah that game was fun". I wish they would just remake that entire game exactly with better graphics.

On a side note.. does anyone remember EA's Earth and Beyond? That was fun.

Good luck finding any player run shard that isn't focused on pvp.

Just a warning, most shards out there are heavily PVP oriented, so if you're just looking to craft and have fun with the economy, most shards aren't going to accommodate what you need, or it will just be plain difficult.

Yeah, I wish they would remake it too, but I doubt that will ever happen.

I've written it off as great memories and something I'll never play again.

Player run shards have a totally different dynamic than the heydays of UO, it's much more than just the old ruleset. Community and trade feel way out.
