Oh shit, I completely forgot about this: remember when Valve hired that Defense of the Ancients guy? Apparently we might be seeing something soon about what he's working on.
Q: When will we hear more about you and Valve? Some people say it will take 2-3 years, can you give us any clues? (from Zeyall)
A: It certainly won't take that long. There are a lot of very talented people here at Valve that are working hard on it every day to ensure high quality in a timely manner. We'll be making an announcement soon actually, and based on the feedback I've been getting since the last mention, I'm sure you all will be as excited as I am.
This is why the GTAIV ports stick in the throat so much - all of these other games had PC ports that, release delay aside, performed superbly and were enhanced in every way over the console versions.
When I first bought GTA 3 I had to play it with the camera constantly looking at the ground to get >10fps and to prevent it from crashing. Look up at the nice view. BAM. Crash.
I had similar problems with Vice City.
In both cases using a mid range PC.
Rockstar didn't fix the performance in the time it took me to complete either game (a long time).
Yeah Rockstar does shitty PC games. Basically buy them a few years later after you have a machine that way out specs them and they will run fine. For GTAIV all you really need is a Quad Core CPU and at least 1GB of video ram and it should run fine.

GTA4 PC is pretty much the definitive version of the game, especially since they bothered to actually put in some neat little features (replay editor, configurable traffic densities, comprehensive control settings), which is actually more than most other devs every bother with the PC anymore.
It just ran like a fucking dog when it came out (dunno about the new patch).

I have an unopened 360 copy to replace the one that was stolen, would I be better off getting the PC version and leaving the 360 version in the wrapper?
shit, steam lost my favorites/categories. time to sort 99 games back into their places.
edit: false alarm, phew! as soon as I started resorting things my old categories reappeared.
Categories are saved to the cloud.
I guess it's the same thing, but sometimes when I start Steam, my jumplist is empty and/or it will open to the store page instead of my library which is what I set as the default. If it's actually messing up because it doesn't connect to cloud right away, that seems rather broken. It would make sense to have that stuff saved locally and only change if cloud says it changed.
I've also had my friends sign in randomly while playing a couple games when I was offline and didn't want to sign in. Is there a bug report page for the new UI somewhere?

I'm not really seeing the major advantages for the PC.
I rented GTA4 for the xbox back when it came out, and now I've bought it for the PC. Only difference I can see is that it runs pretty terribly on the PC (I mean, I can get decent fps, but it doesn't look so hot...).
But being able to input your own music for the Independent Radio Station is pretty cool.
The pc version of gta4 is wonderful once you manage to get past the performance issues.
With my current years-old PC, it performs quite decently for me. The most recent patch that came out alongside EFLC puts in more graphics customization so that tweaking it to good performance doesn't require nearly as much work as it did at launch of the game. I imagine that a midrange PC built with today's hardware would handle the game quite smoothly even at high resolutions. I'm getting ~40fps at 2148x1152 and medium texture settings using the most recent patch.

GTA4 is a great game, my only beef with it was that I played it for hours and hours thinking "I'll get to buy property real soon" but I never did
Cool, joined. I have Dirt 1, 2 & Toca 3. I bought Toca 3 in the current sale because it was silly cheap at > £2, & it's still a respectable sim "track" racer.
I just bought Fuel, but they ran out of license keys I wonder how long it takes them to get more
Some one has to drive all the way from the northwesternmost camp in FUEL to the the southeasternmost camp, pick up the keys and then drive all the way back.
FUEL is out of keys, anyone recommend it for the price?
Just got an invite to the PA group, thanks AlabasterSlim.
FUEL got a whole load of horrible reviews. I bought it as part of the pack, but from what I've read it looks like it could be a fun time waster. Conceptually it's excellent in my opinion, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'd tell you, but by the time I do I'm afraid the sale will be over.
I say you bite the bullet and leave the regretting (if any) for you know, later.

From what I've heard about FUEL it's that it's more fun to drive around and explore than to race. Some video I saw about it's procedural generation said it's a good game if you liked driving in GTA but were hampered by the small size of the map.
Picked up a 360 Controller for Windows today, and wow. Makes a huge difference in GRID; I was doing OK with the keyboard yesterday, but it's a lot easier with a controller. Didn't try Dirt 2 with the keyboard, but from the little bits I played with the controller I imagine it'd be incredibly hard.

Controllers are win for racing games. The 360 controller in particular is so comfortable.

I picked up the pack simply for my Logitech G25 (which has been seeing less use lately), and realized all over again how a wheel actually spells hard mode for me. It jacks up the difficulty, and made Grid a lot more frustrating for me.
I didn't really think about it before, but I would not want to play Grid without the control of my speed that the triggers on the 360 controller gives.

There's nothing worse than actually kicking complete ass in Dirt 2, heading for the finish line of a gate crasher... only to lose all control and plow straight into the sidepost of the finish line.
The batteries in my controller died. I still got first.

It's doable, it just feels really weird to tap the keys instead of smoothly applying steering or acceleration/braking

The worst thing is the fact that the playerbase on ranked races is packed with silly geese. Almost every "non-ghost" race is a cluster goose as everyone just tries to T-bone everyone else on every corner. I can only ever get a podium position by hanging in the rear for most of an event. Only 2 or 3 racers ever finish beacause of this, it's quite terrible.
I think it's because every race in Dirt 2 online is unconnected, so damage becomes irrelevant. People seem to think that its ok to smash into the next car to compensate for por driving ability.

So, umm, hi steam guys. I'm not a steam user, but my brother in law is, and we share a router. Ever since the new Steam UI update, whenever my brother in law tries to join a server (both MW2 and L4D2) our internet connection haults. As in, I've got a constant ping running, and upon trying to join, I see about 5-9 packets being lost, which is just enough to kick him out of his game and kick me off of Halo.
I tried some port forwarding, but that didn't seem to do the trick. It doesn't happen every time, but probably something like 9 out of 10 games.

Damn Valve is busy these days. No wonder we haven't heard much about Episode 3.

I also love cranking it up to 100 and spreading some chaos.

Also the answer is: Get the versions your friends have so you can play coop.

Man I need to get a 360 controller before my credit card magically appears on the order form for a steering wheel controller.
If the other Codemaster racing games are half as good, the package is well worth the 18 bucks.
All headshots

The game is absolutely fantastic with the 360 pad. DO IT.
We can all play together, BTW.
I wrote a DiRT 2 review some time back if anyone is interested.

Think Rockstar individual Game Sales will continue today?

And FUEL is a pretty good buy for that price, definitely not worth $50, but just the huge open world is worth the couple bucks.
I think I missed the boat on Rockstar game sales. I wish Max Payne 1 would go back on...
