Anyone with a machine capable of running Steam is also capable of taking the five minutes it would take to torrent a Genesis Emulator and a complete romset.
I'm totally down with buying old Sega Games (even though I have official Genesis Collections and SmashPacks on multiple platforms, including the PC), but they really need to add multiplayer over Steam through their emulator to differentiate the Steam versions of the games from the other stuff.
Basically what I am saying is I want to play Streets of Rage with you motherfuckers.
I'm not saying it's not, but for the overwhelming majority of people using the internet, are they going to spend $3 per game from a limited selection just to have it on their Steam list, or are they just going to take the five minutes and have every Genesis game ever made for free?
This is why they need something to differentiate Steam Genesis games from roms that are widely available on the internet.
I really think that they would have been better going in at a lower price.
£2 means people might grab a couple of games that they want to play.
89p means they go al a cart on their childhood. Considering the size of the library of games they have from days gone by, they can afford to do this.
If they are smart, they will launch with a decent selection, and 1/3 off. Then have new games added regularly (say every 2 weeks), on half price for a week. Then expand to other consoles and the Mega CD/32X stuff. Then once most of their library is available, do occasional promotions like "25% off Sonic games this month", or whatever.
Man. I was just thinking, "Hey, FEAR is a pretty fun FPS with bullet time mechanics! I can have some good times with it for £6.99!".
And then I was thinking "Oh shit, but it's also all about horror. No fucking way."
So, no FEAR for me
The thing I remember most about it is a lot of running through corridors and construction sites, and shooting lots of mans. I thought the game was a wasted opportunity. Initially it seemed like the game I had dreamed of for years. A somewhat realistic tactical shooter where you go up against supernatural beings. That never happened, obviously. It sidetracked into that daft story about Alma and that other guy (Fettel? Fattel?), which I didn't like much.
The game really does shine when you shoot mans, though. Each individual bullet is tracked and combined with bullet time and lots of cool weapons, it's great. I never played the expansions. I heard one is considered canon and the other is considered a bastard redhaired stepchild.

Sure, but I don't have the energy for that anymore. I want legal versions, so I'm glad Sega is doing this.
The things is, the adoption rate of Steamworks is only going up.
Digital distribution rate in general is going up, not just Steamworks'. I'm with Zedar, I want there to be genuine competition in the market for this shit.

I just want those competitors to up their game too. As far as I'm concerned, Steam is the top dog. Only GoG offers something actually cool in addition to Steam.
We need more older games. I can't for the life of me find any download place selling Wargasm. Don't laugh, it's a bloody great title from way back when. I used to play it on the way to school when I was around 12 at a friends house. I remember it well. Probably looks worse now than it did then but I really want it.
Question about gifting across regions. I know that you get the other version of the game, eg people sending the uncensored version of L4D2 to Australia, but what about release dates? Say I were to paypal someone in the UK to gift me Alpha protocol, would it unlock with the european release date of 27/5, or the American date of 6/1?

Actually, the regional pricing is actually more favorable for the UK anyway, for once. Anyone in the UK willing to gift it to me if I paypal them the money to buy it?
Asking again, now that it's actually a reasonable time in europe.

FEAR 2 is the canon sequel, since it was developed by Monolith, who owns the FEAR IP. Both Extraction Point and Perseus Mandate were developed by Timegate. Vivendi still owned the FEAR name at the time, but only the name. Warner Bros (who currently owns Monolith) bought the name back when the Activision/Blizzard/Vivendi/Sierra/Clusterfuck thing happened.

I can't find any confirmation on how the gifting situation works but apparently people say going through a european proxy server would get you the EU release date unlock. I have no idea if there are be any risks involved in doing this though.

It'll work, risk involved is that you log in to Steam through the proxy/vpn you're using.
I used an American VPN (through OpenVPN I believe) to play Borderlands.
Gifting doesn't make a difference for unlock dates, it's from where you log in that does. (For versions like L4D2 uncensored gifting matters)
It's hard to stay afraid in FEAR, just realize that you very quickly start carrying around ridiculous guns and will be able to end anything in your path.
Quoted for truth. There's one SOLID freakout moment in the first FEAR, which pretty much everyone in the thread has alluded to, and the only reason it gets you is that it jumps out at you at one of the very very few times when you are not in complete control of the situation.
Most of the time, you have the ability to slow time and an assortment of high calibre weapons, so it's really difficult to feel particularly threatened. There's even a little loophole in the way the game handles reloads from enemy-dropped weapons that makes it almost impossible to run out of ammunition if you don't mind being a little cheesy.
Extraction Point, on the other hand, did actually manage to put some genuinely creepy moments in. I much preferred it to the original game, to be honest.
Goddammit. Look what you guys made me do! I bought'd FEAR. Not a week after I dropped the 60 for the THQ pack. Turning out to be an expensive fortnight.

It's probably the same psychological process. And AFAIK there's no coming back.
Haha.
Seriously. I want to simulate realistic butt catastrophes. Did you know that you can control a dong loaded with semen? Catastrophe.
Plus fuck it. Dicks are neat.

Hmm. There are these Trainz games too, and they seem to be comparable to Railworks which costs a decent bit more just for the base game, never mind the staggering amount of DLC.
Trainz also supports fan created content. So free trains and scenery and buttplugs and stuff.
Holy shit Darmak. I can't stop laughing.
If I do leap into the stygian darkness of obsessive Train simulation, I'm doing the LP and I'm taking you all down with me.
Guess I'll do a little research and see which one is for me. If Trainz offers good simulation to go with fan created content I think it'll end up on my Steam list soonish.
Still can't quite understand why Tropico 3 has all these achievements, is called the "Steam Special Edition", and it's not a Steamworks game with Steam Achievements.
Otherwise it's a hilarious and amazing game.

A good question indeed. I don't know why it has achievements but no way of letting others see them let alone have Steam achievements which would fix that.
It's even more now, but I don't really want to make another image because half of the DLC is on sale so it won't be accurate (plus it's a pain in the ass removing all of that shit from my cart).

No need to buy every piece of DLC in existence for something. I do quite well making considered DLC purchases.
It can kinda be done without adding it to your cart.
Might not be entirely accurate due to almost a third of the DLC currently being discounted by 25%.

Hmm, it's starting to look more and more like Trainz is the way to go. Big community with loads of user created content and an in-game browser for their online portal.

That is how Valve would do it anyway.

All right, people. It is not a gerbil. It is not a hamster. It is not a guinea pig. It is a death rabbit. Death. Rabbit. Say it with me, now.
They could cut the price and take the hit themselves, making sure the publisher gets the same cut. Some money is better than no money.
I love Steam, but I want there to be real competitors.
I'd buy that for a dollar.
