where you find the guy's dog dead with a leaf in its mouth, then come back to find the guy has died because the dog wasn't able to bring the leaf he needed for his medicine.
You don't get the B ending first, you got the A ending. I know, it phrases it weird, it says which ending you'll get next at the end, not which one you got.

Nice amazon had this avaliable for $27.99 and I had $20 credit from buying a Reach, so now it is on it's way to me for the low price of $7.99. Can't wait to finally get to play it.
I think in that post he actually got the A ending, so I'd say that the B ending is actually happier. At least to me it is.
All Nier ever wanted was to be with Yonah again, and he finally got it. Who cares if the human race is doomed, they were never going to move forward with Gestalt anyway. They took too long so they were never going to get rid of the consciousnesses the Replicants got.
An esteemed colleague of mine just finished a bitchin' review of Nier. For those of you who don't mind reading over and over about the nature of Nier's greatness, then it's worth checking out. He kind of goes into why exactly the genre-switching is as awesome as it is.
Full Disclosure: I DO write for this site, and I DID write the first opinion on Nier, but my goal is just to share a good, intelligent review (which is much cooler than my own IMO) of a great game with like-minded fans.
I like what he wrote, actually. It's easy to dismiss Nier as something very Japanese, but besides its 90s anime influence (which is more than welcome), it feels much more American than you would expect. Especially during the Infinity Engine homage sections.
Man, I need to harvest my wheat.

30 minutes in and I am already in love with this game.
And it only gets better and better.
Nier is one of those beautiful games that only come around every so often. Its a shame it wont have as many people play it as it deserves.
Yeah I am a few hours in now and I can honestly say I don't get the reviews at all. This game is amazing. Really sad now that it did so poorly.
I thought that the combat and the environments started to get stale after a while. I also played for like 50 hours, so I got my moneys worth, but after killing the same mobs spawning in the same place for the thousandth time, I had had enough.

Yeah 50 hours is a lot of entertainment these days.
I really like the characters. Weiss and Kaine at least so far are really really great. Both have a consistancy that a lot of game characters lack in most games. In a lot of ways it reminds me of Plancescape: Torment.
I loved everything about Kaine. I loved her foul mouth, her bloodlust, and I loved that every time I started to find her attractive I'd remember that she had a dong, and feel really creeped out.
Though, actually, I loved most of the characters in this game.
Crops don't take that long if you're playing in short bursts over multiple days.
Once I figured out that they grew in realtime, though, I found it pretty amusing.
Fishing is, indeed, much better for money once you can catch the big stuff.
My advice on fishing:
The game lies to you. I know that's what you'll hear if you do the barest, tiniest bit of research, but remember it well.
The actual way to catch fish is to push the left stick in a certain direction, which will be a diagonal in the opposite quarter of the stick from the way you see the fish moving. Basically, keep moving the stick until you see the fish start to take damage, and then make fine adjustments until you see it start taking more and more damage. When the fish turns, you'll need to find the sweet spot again.
Fishing in this game is actually easier than in any other game I've ever played, but they don't explain it properly, and at one point you're made to think you have to fish (you don't, you can buy that fish from the market in the town you'll be in), which is the source of a lot of bad reviews for this game.
Given how simple the fishing really is, I'd say that's more of an indictment of those reviewers for not thinking or trying very hard, but I'd rather a fellow PAer not have to go through the same bullshit.

no no no, wrong
fish only become available to sell once you've caught them, including the one you're talking about
the reviews got caught up on that section because they didn't pay attention to the giant X on their map and fished in the wrong spot
This game is amazing in the parts where it's good. There are a couple of rough spots, but if you're buying in to the game, they're not hard to get through.
The director has said he was actually a little annoyed at how people liked the soundtrack more than the game. It's kind of hard not to though considering how awesome it is.

Is Hard Mode harder or does it make the boss fights drag more?
because I'm playing it on hard and just beat the first boss(es), and yeah, that was a really overly long boss fight

don't play this game for the challenge
reaaaalllly isn't worth it
edit: there are some rumors that the difficulty setting changes the drop rate of certain crafting items, but since Nier's weapon creation system is one of the most deliberately sadistic ever implemented, that's sort of a moot point
Also holy shit this may have the best score to any game I've ever played
Also also this is like if god of war, demon's souls, and Final Fantasy fucked and had some weird trichromosonal baby
Har-dee-har.
Yes the music in this game is truly amazing. If you like chanty female voice and triple times, it has endless good.
Seriously, there are basically no songs that I didn't like from the game, and I paid forty fucking dollars to import the soundtrack after I had already acquired MP3s of it by... other means.
My handle is pronounced like Kain from Legacy of Kain, and then a long e, because few people dark-x-goth-5000 enough to use Kain as a handle are going to take themselves lightly enough to add a diminuitive. I've been using this name for about 11 years now :P I was quite amused to see something similar being used as everyone's favorite foulmouthed swordswoman-in-lingerie.
You should buy the DLC, just for the music. It has some story bits in it, too, but more importantly it has TECHNO REMIXES of other music from the game, which are all good, IMO.
Also yeah, Hard mode isn't really hard, just more tedious. The combat in this game isn't really polished or focused on enough to make Hard all that interesting.
What IS interesting about the difficulty is that it modifies your statistics. You literally have something like 4x as much health on Easy as you do on Hard. Also, you can change the difficulty at any point in game, if you feel yourself leveling ahead of the curve or whatever. The most annoying thing about Hard mode, though, is that you have way fewer MP, making spells really eat through your magic bar, even with a really good cost-reduction word attached.
As of this posting I have something like 600,000 health on Easy mode, due to your stats' exponential growth. I view the exponential growth as something of a commentary on leveling up in RPGs in general, since you'd never know if you didn't look at your stats screen - you only notice the effects, which are gradual, and generally render the numbers meaningless.
If you haven't played Drakengard, then I do contend, SIR, that you are sort of a waste!
In all seriousness, though, leave the decision to buy or not buy it until you've beaten the game once, as A ) You'll need to be high level to complete it and B ) There really isn't much to it. If you don't end up buying it, look up the musica on Youtube.
I kind of wish the DLC songs had been on my soundtrack, but oh well. At least I get the ending song in all four languages!
Hard mode also does level scaling, which is where most of the "difficulty" comes from. You're never going to level above the curve, making battles twice as long as they need to be. It does make getting the 100 hit combo achievement really easy to get though.

My favorite so far has been the quest with the wayward son
Then I played the new game +.
Huh, that IS weird.
Just remember, you've already seen the super happy ending.

Got recommended it solely based on Rust's opinions
If this game is bad he's a lying liar mcliarpants. who smells.
just remember all the caveats i included about the gameplay and it won't hurt you too bad
don't be too much of a completionist unless you are willing to suffer for very little reward
and for your own sanity, just don't do the gardening minigame at all
Just plant shit and water it if you see it change into a new model, and when it grows, free money.
At least, that's what I did until i was going for lunar tears. Trying to get THEM is definitely for the insane only.
crops don't sell for much, and they grow in real-time so it takes forever

I didn't have a chance to figure it out, since I didn't resort to things besides fishing, I just caught the stupid thing.

I think I'm going to like this game
Choo choo! Its so worth it. Haven't had much time to play this week but the 8 or 9 hours I have into it have been fantastic.
Yelling at you is by far the nicest thing this game will do to you.
If you find that enjoyable, then Kainé is going to be a delight for you the whole game.
I, too, was really impressed when the game booted up to that speech, and Kainé ended up as pretty much my favorite character.

there's really not much to it beyond the techno remix and a few vague lines of plot
