I have to say that I do enjoy the character of Caim in Drakengard. At least he's refreshingly honest about his bloodthirst compared to every other prettyboy protagonist in most japanese games.

This a thousand times. Caim is fucking delightful. Soon after he loses his ability to speak, he's just killed a group of soldiers that were closing in to abduct or kill his sister, which you did in gameplay, and when the cutscene for the story begins he's just standing over one of the soldiers' bodies, stabbing it over and over. Caim wants to murder things, really, really badly, and it's only by chance that he's fallen on the "good" side. About the only redeemable quality of his character is that he's super devoted to his sister. Other than that, he's just a refreshing berserker.

And she is really devoted to him

    like a lot
    in her pants

There really aren't any mentally sound people in Drakengard. About the the only living bieng Caim cares for by the end of the game is Angelus.

It's been a while, but I also remember the map being pretty crappy and not helpful at all in the first few dungeons.

You should've given up on those horrible, horrible quests and just continued the story.

Guys - just found out Im off to the Forest of Myth. The lead up to it is incredibly creepy.

Unfortunately I have to go pick up some food - and I decided not to even start that way until I can just sit and devote a couple hours to it.

You all have built me up so much for this section, I'm really excited.

Just did the Forest of Myth, the mansion...and...what comes NEXT.

    Holy shit this game.
I chose to have Emil freeze Kaine, and I was kind of surprised how emotional it got. I have feeling from what I have read that THIS is the new "start point" when you do your multiple run throughs, so I made a new save file for it, so I could go back and see what happens if I dont freeze Kaine.

Man, I cant wait to see what happened in the 5 years that elapsed. How is Nier even still ALIVE, and what the hell happened to his eye!?

I can not wait to keep playing this.

    Good to know.

Also, I kind of played it as real as it felt - meaning, once the Forest of Myth happened I left a lot of sidequests undone because I felt an urgency to get this stuff wrapped up.

Is there a penalty for not doing sidequests? I did a fair amount, but didn't do any of the fishing, or the merchant who wanted a billion things, and I never found that guy's son.

Quests are 99% money (with like 1 or 2 that give weapons as rewards). However, many of the quests do have interesting stories that tie into each other and help flesh out the world. They're worth doing, but not worth getting worked up over.

I froze there like a stunned mullet. I made the annihilation choice twice, completely based on emotion.

I'm consistently amazed at the depths of feeling this game can bring out in me. I don't really care that it's sad feelings a lot of the time. I'm just enjoying that my normal analytical approach to a game is being subverted and I'm getting pulled out of that standoffish demeanor and straight into the moment.

More about why I did what I did:
I chose to sacrifice her because I really don't feel that much of a connection to her at the moment, to be honest. She's done nothing really than kind of go away and come back at the last second to save the day. I feel AWFUL for her, based on what she's said - but I would have no idea at all about her hermaphrodite problem if it wasn't for the press and you guys talking about it openly. As of now, I just know she's been changed by shades, and she's part shade.

I also have no idea what she whispered to Emil, so making the choice for Emil was a little disconnecting.

It was still a sad choice, but as of right now I don't feel that connected to her, so it was an easy one. She's begged for death the entire game, and I finally had the chance to give that to her - and have it mean something.

Man, I can not get myself psyched about these sidequests. everything everyone wants somehow always boils down to looking for random materials. On my 2nd and 3rd playthroughs, will what I have carry over? That was I can just kind of grind along as I go, and EVENTUALLY end up with enough?

Also, question about what I just saw...second half of the game...1st playthrough...
At some point will I get a LITTLE more detail on what the hell just happened to Emil?

Turns out he's like 1000 years old and a weapon. Then we find his freaky sister.

Then his sister EATS HIM, and I kill her, and she turns into some sort of Vortex. Then I walk through the vortex and now...

...Emil is a smaller version of his sister? What happened to the sister? Why did he transform? Will this be explained more later on, in subsequent playthroughs?

He's really good because I'm really good at noticing the similarities in peoples voices. For Liam Obrian, I picked up War straight after playing Basara, noticed Weiss after he said something that had the same distinctive twang.
I had no ideas about the voice actor of Nier playing Elvis. None at all. The voices are so different.

Beat the game just now. I must say, I really liked it. Some thoughts on the ending. Or first ending, I guess.
Not feeling the Kingdom Hearts vibe I got from the revelation of what the Shades really are. I already kinda thought the smaller Shades looked like the Shadow Heartless with some yellow. It didn't ruin the game for me or anything, it's just that instead of feeling like a big revelation I was just like "Oh. Ok, then." And I'd seen the Popola/Devola turning out to be evil thing from a mile away, though I wa still sad to have to kill them. One thing that I should have seen coming but didn't is that the Shadow King was Nier. Like, even when the twins basically tell you he is I still didn't put two and two together.

So is there any rhyme or reason whatsoever to what the robots drop?

I just stacked up a bunch of quests for the junk heap, since I knew I had to head back there anyways. I get there for the second time, become SUPER depressed, and then head in, figuring I can take care of the main storyline quest AND the 2 or 3 sidequests that all need robot parts in one go.

And now I have 19773754902 broken cables, and nothing useful whatsoever. I just ran it a SECOND time (I usually go first floor straight to elevator -> basement 2 -> long tram ride shit -> giant robot -> staircase -> outside), and once again came back with maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 parts I needed for ONE of the sidequests.

Is there any specific areas to target or places to go so I actually can get something USEFUL, or is this just grinding at its absolute worst?

I have the phoenix spear and love smashing robots, and dont mind that if they dropped stuff five times a trip, I'd need to run it like 5 times to get everything for everyone. But dropping things ONCE, if even THAT, is stupid and I will just call these sidequests off.
