Nononono. You haven't beaten Nier until you've played the NG+, dude. It's not some quirky "keep your old weapons and levels" thing, it's a playing experience necessary to your understanding and enjoyment of the plot. Ending A technically isn't even an ending, it's like the first chapter.

I'd heard as much, but I don't really care if I wait a little while in between. I might just start playing ahead when one LP or the other gets there, but I really just don't want to play it again right away. It won't break up the flow of the story any worse than waiting for a new book in a series for years.

I picked up the phoenix spear and upgraded it once on my second playthrough. I see what you guys are talking about.
Still, I'm so strong atm that choice of weapon doesn't mean that much. And it's annoying as all hell to hit those tiny critters with the spear. None of the spear attacks have any tracking at all.

Yeah, towards the end of playthrough 1 you get strong enough that your weapon doesn't matter too much.

For tiny enemies with the spear, I use the triangle attack. Using it without locking on you can kill a few at a time.

Weapons in this game come down to preference, though. The only person I know in town who's also played through this swears by 1-handed swords.

The triangle attack with spear has zero tracking. You'll hit 3 of them, then miss the next four completely because they're so evasive. It's easier just to hit them with magic or whip out the twohander or one handed sword for a while.

Especially when they try to mob you, the two handed sword triangle attack cleans up. They run straight into it.

So, I feel like buying a new RPG, and I've heard (mostly) good things about this and Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Could someone who has played both fill me in on which one they liked more? Does either game have any glaring deficiencies that I should know about? Thanks for the help.

I can't even begin to say all the reasons that Nier is better than Last Hope. In short, Last Hope has decent combat, awful characters, awful voice acting, awful dungeons, and forgettable music. Nier has passable combat and amazing everything else.

I'm with Gilder on this. I got about halfway through Last Hope and that was only or the gameplay. The story and characters were so painful to endure that I just couldn't stomach it anymore. I was basically skipping cutscenes on my first playthrough so as to not want to tear my eyes out.

So on my first playthrough, the second half of this game, the story just goes from pretty good to holy shit great. But not great like Alan Wake (in my opinion its great!) or something in that vein, where you're learning new things and freaking out.

Great in that I am just EMOTIONALLY drained right now. Just got to:
    The wedding scene. God damn.

I KNEW something bad would happen. I KNEW IT! So the lady shows up and says wolves are coming and I figure alright time to go battle beac...

then the shade attacks Fyra. Holy. Shit.

Jaw open. I beat that fucking wolf so hard, and he runs away and I am treated to the SADDEST cutscene.

I cant fathom how run through 2 gets more depressing, and I havent even gotten Ending A yet.

Such an exellent EXCELLENT story and the way they make the second play through is certainly goddamn interesting. It will change your view on everything you've seen.

    Just finished run through 1.

I have a gut feeling what run through 2 may be doing, and i can see where it would be very, very sad.

But man, the whole last hour of this was just phenomenal. Absolutely stunning.
Funny you say the wolves part in the 2nd run through is sad. When he stabbed that wolf, the sad music was weird to me and made me feel conflicted. He was avenging the death of his love - but it wasn't triumphant music. Now that I'm not sure WHAT the shade wolf was, it could be very upsetting.

I just saw the screen that said Ending B will be Kaine's story, so that should be interesting.

I was going to ask a lot of questions about what I just saw in ending A, but honestly I think Im going to hold off and avoid any hint towards what it may be - because I have a feeling it will become more clear, and my sad, sad suspicions will be confirmed...

Man I figured I would just load up the endgame save to see what the new game looked like, and an hour later it's pretty damn interesting. Not what I was expecting at all.

Im kind of confused about what I read, but again, I think it will become clear as I go. There's a lot I don't get right now, but thats normal.

Although at the moment, I become so damn angry every time:
I see Popola and Devola, especially the scene I just saved after - where they kick Kaine and Emil out of town. I'm still unclear as to why they did that, but again, Im sure it will become clear.

But still - everytime they talk now Im like YOU TWO ARE NOT WHAT YOU SEEM AHHHHHHHHHHHH

    Hey Rent!

As you're aware from my previous posts I'm sure, I'm on to playthrough 2 and have Ending A.

I just started reading your LP of Neir, and your description of how it ties into Drakengard. I read the LP of Drakengard a little while ago...but Im still kind of unclear how the 2 tie together, now that I see you say it should be clear after Ending A of Nier.

Here's what I put together in my head, but a little clarification would be great.
I know the beginning of Nier takes place in that ashy black and white world that the really fucked up ending of Drakengard was in. It just looked the same.

I noticed the one tree in the Forest of Myth had a memory of the red dragon falling from the sky, but the tree had forgotten it, and thought that was neat.

But I didn't see anything in the actual ending. Any explaination without spoiling anything I havent seen yet would be awesome. From the ending, I did notice that up in the tower with Devola and Papola it looked like the same area as the beginning of the entire game - that burned out, ashy Tokyo from Drakengard. But as for the actual ending, where suddenly we get younger Nier and Yonah commenting on it being bright, I didn't get it (but figured I would eventually) but also didnt see a connection...

Also Rent, it's hilarious to re-read this thread. Im treading carefully as not to spoil much, but I've got a hunger for learning more and discussing this game so Ive been re-reading the whole thread. Seeing you get ending "A", and be kind of like "Well, that was weird. Great, but not THE BEST EVER." - which is kind of how I feel. Then I see you complain about having to re-do half the game - also how I feel.

Then suddenly you proclaim it to have the greatest ending of all time, forever.

So I'm very excited to keep going and see what happens that swings it over. I'm very, very into this story.

There's a translated document floating around called Grimoire Nier, when you've beaten the game and gotten ending B, pull that up and you'll get to read the devs of the game explaining what the hell's going on behind the scenes. Part of what I like about Nier is the game itself doesn't explain crap. It's not about anything except this one guy's quest to rescue his daughter, and nothing else matters. There's a very rich backstory that we only find bits and pieces alluded to; there's no point where they go "Here's what's up", you have to piece it together yourself. Then you read about what's going on in the world and hear the lead dev make some casual throwaway comment that spins the entire game on its head.

Ed: This contains so many spoilers. So many.
So Caim and Angelus fell out of the sky into modern day Tokyo right

Well, the Japanese airforce shot 'em down

after, scientists took their impaled bodies down from tokyo tower and studied them

Caim got so angry for dying like a bitch that he started "white chlorification", which turned people into salt (yeah I know), and Angelus got so pissed she started the "Rage Virus", which turned people into crazy killing machines called Legion

then the twin viruses (white chlorification, rage virus) escaped the "Wall of Jericho" (quarantine zone) and fucked the world over

but since the scientists got useful info out of the bodies of Caim and Angelus (namely how the fuck magic works), they developed Emil and his sister to destroy the white chlorification and rage virus. They could beat back the Legion but white chlorification was unstoppable so the experiment was deemed a failure

As a last resort they decided to separate all remaining sentient humans bodies and souls and called the "souls" that were kept from the split Shades. In this way they hoped that the rage virus and white chlorification would ravage the empty human shell and leave the Shades fine

To this end scientists developed exact replicas of the original human bodies, called Replicants (hurr durr blade runner) to "place" the Shades in once the rage virus/white chlorification shit was over

The original plan was to wait for both viruses to die out, and then after reunite all the shades with their Replicant bodies in a method called project Gestalt. The Grimoires Noir and Weiss were developed as a two-part executable command line "program" to cause project Gestalt to happen

    all went well until...

the original Replicant (Yonah), suddenly gained sentience. This meant part of the world had to be cordoned off so the Replicants could live like normal human beings

The original Shade (Nier, or You) had a defect as well, this made Shades go psychotic and murderous. In addition some Shades, when they tried to reposess their Replicant bodies, due to two different sentiences trying to "meet" it would cause some sort of compatibility error (like trying to run the same program twice at the same time on one computer) and the Replicant would get the Black Scrawl, which would eventually kill both Shade and Replicant

Popola and Devola were androids created for the express purpose of one day having both Grimoires be reunited (To execute Project Gestalt in full) and to create more Replicants (Replicants can't reproduce).

The shadowlord, Nier, after 1300 years of nothing fucking happening, eventually got sick of waiting and decided to hunt down his original Replicant (the guy you play as for the majority of the game), kill or repossess you, and most importantly get Yonah's Replicant (your daughter) and Grimoire Weiss to execute Project Gestalt

he is successful, and places Yonah's Shade inside Yonah's Replicant, unfortunately you come in, fight and nearly defeat him (Nier, the Shadowlord), and Yonah's Shade-possessed Replicant decides to sacrifice herself to give Yonah's Replicant body back

then you kill Nier and Grimoire Noir

so , to sum up: You killed the original Shade, who incidentally is what all other Shades are based on and come from, you killed Grimoire Noir, the only possible way to reunite Shades with their Replicants that don't end in the Black Scrawl, and you killed Devola and Popola, the only possible way to make more Replicants in this now barren world

To sum up the sum up: You fucked everything up, forever, just to save your daughter

Who, when you think about it, isn't really "yours" in the first place

Oh also let's not count the innumerable amount of actual humans (in the form of Shades) you kill to save your daughter

Congrats for winning, fuck you. You're welcome.

Yeah, fun thing I loved about the game (Major goddamn spoilers)
That "hell yeah" moment when Weiss is all "fuck you, Shadowlord and Noir, I ain't helping you guys, I'm gonna help out my new best friend Nier cuz he's awesome"? And you're all pumping your fist and ready to kick some ass?

Yeah, that act is the pivotal moment that will lead to the extinction of the human race. Nier managed to convince the only hope humanity had left to quit his job, basically.

EDIT: In fact, the whole "Weiss, you dumbass" speech that opens the game is pretty much the last thing anyone ever says before humanity's destruction becomes assured. So, uh. Way to go, Kaine.

Should I read this? Was this in response to me or did you start talking with CrappyJack?

    I started reading it...
and then wondered if this was stuff that would become more clear as I read the weird documents Devola and Papola gave me, and kind of started skimming instead.

Then I saw 'you fucked everything up', and while I definatley am GETTING that vibe, it hasn't been explictly stated to me yet, so I stopped reading because if there IS a big reveal I fucked everything up, I was unaware of it.

So let me know if you think I should hold off on that spoiler or not.

I hate being halfway through a game and liking it so much I do this stupid dance on the line of getting more info on it or ruining it for myself.

Good read - it explains a lot. The thing Im noticing though - I really don't feel too bad yet.
Im glad I read that, because it came right out and said a lot of things I just kind of assumed. It was nice to get confirmation on it. I never picked up on replicants not being able to reproduce, but it makes sense. I also still don't really get why killing Shade Neir dooms humanity. Wouldn't there be a set amount of shades (the same number of people who were alive when the split everything?). I don't fully grasp his importance yet.

But the wierd thing is, I got most of it. But I still wanted to win, I guess. I knew when I was fighting the shadowlord that I was fighting my own soul, but I had become so attached to my little group and my personal quest I just didn't care. I was much more upset with what happened to Emil, and his little monologue, then I was with dooming humanity. Which I totally get is very selfish, but in the context of playing 20 hours of game fighting for my daughter (who is not really my daughter, but dammit my shell loves her just the same), I was so obsessed with my friends and my goal I just wanted to accomplish it.

And the ending - like I said - I didnt really get it but it almost seemed like time somehow rewound - Yonah was young again, the world was brighter and I even see real Nier and real Yonah up in the clouds all happy. Like things would be ok.

I guess that they did SUCH a good job of making me care about who I was playing as, and Kaine, and Emil, that even though I grasped that I was killing people - I had felt like these people were attacking ME. If I was so important to them, if this village of shells for souls was so important - why did they keep attacking us? I was just defending what I cared about. People were being dicks and I fought back.

I also suspect that ending B will make me feel like a complete douchebag for feeling this way.

Also holy shit I just realized that the intro of the game with Neir and Yonah is the same Nier and Yonah I play as later, right? Because shells dont age? Maybe? Still not clear on why the book was there though...

I totally plan on getting every ending, so please feel free to just tell me to be patient if anything Ive asked or am confused about becomes more clear as I keep playing. Stuff like the big description you just posted Rent is awesome because there's no way I would have known that anyways - but I'm still hoping for some big suprises (and more importantly, just coming to some realizations on my own) in the next 3 playthroughs.

From what I recall, the Nier and Yonah at the beginning are the originals. They're apparently immune to the viruses since they're running around, but Yonah's sick. The powers that be basically make a deal with Nier, that if they can use him as the catalyst for the cure and figure out what makes him special, they'll help Yonah. Unfortunately, it ends up taking a few hundred years, and Nier (the shadowlord) gets a little damned impatient and wants his daughter now, which kinda kicks things off

Ooooh CrappyJack I like that. Do any of the extra runthroughs actually
let you replay that intro, so I can see it again? I was just confused because you are already fighting shades at that point...

Because most of the runthroughs start beyond that.

Also - Rent - holy shit we're in some sort of time portal. I just went back to see what Rust told you (you referenced above how he explained it to you) - and we are the same person, and now you are the new RUST.

Literally - while you were playing through your posts are almost identical to my posts. And you beat Ending A and almost word for word said what I said, and then RUST came in and said to YOU almost word for word what YOU just said to ME. And reading your turn around from "This is neat" to "Holy shit amazing" - Im now going to stop asking questions and just go with it, because if we're having the same thoughts and reactions to things, and I see how it turned out with you loving this game to death, Im trusting the same will happen to me.

    Also
I think you're the shade and Im the replicant and I will kill you if you come to posess me.

Youre just lucky I didnt have time at work to show our posts side by side. It was freaky.

Quick question about my second run through. I missed some dialogue and the completionist in my is going insane:
In the Lost Shrine, I just did the fight with the big golem thing. Heartbreaking. Hansel and Gretel are dead because of me, and the whole time I was fighting them and hating them they were yelling at me to stop.

Anyways, it ends and Tyrann possesses Kaine. The first time I fought her, Tyrann had a lot of comments - all about killing us. When I finally got Kaine down he started yelling "IM GOING TO KILL YOU ALL!" and I accidentally delivered the killing blow, cutting him/it off. I reloaded the save and ran through it 3 more times, trying to hear what it was about to say, and now the line just doesn't even happen.

Since its the last time Kaine turns into a shade in the main game (in the first run at least), I was curious if Tyrann actually says anything meaningful about being defeated/what happens to it and I cut it off.

If there was anything actually MEANINGFUL that it said, let me know. I just think Tyrann is really cool addition and would hate it if I cut off some awesome speech.

i hate to bump this but seriously, this is the strangest game to me.

I do not enjoy the sidequests at all. I just realized because I went on to the 2nd half of the game at 29%, I will NEVER 100% the game. I don't WANT to 100% the game ANYWAY.

But this story is so fucking interesting that it bothers me. I kill time at work dancing around Ending B spoilers because Im not there yet, but trying nonetheless to absorb everything I can about what I already have seen and know.

The background for this story is just incredible. How they EVER managed to take that ending from Drakengard and make it a compelling, interesting and creative story I will never know.

And now no one else is playing it so I am all alone.
    Like EMIL! =(

I found the game cheap and I'm giving it another try. I managed to kill the giant boar and complete the fragile delivery quest, finally. Things are looking...better, at least.

Now, how do you work fishing? I failed so many times it gave up and just gave me the fish.

Press the *action button* when you see the line jerk and pull in the opposite direction of the ripple. There may be one or two false, little jerks before the big one. Do not be fooled!

Also: NIeR possesses what is objectively the greatest video game story ever told.

I tried to follow a lets play of Pathologic and it seemed really cool but it also never got translated and one playthrough you couldnt do because the translation was so bad no one could figure it out and it also seemed INCREDIBLY dull most of the time.

But I have always hoped that company could get some cash to put something out on XBLA, as I do totally admire the style they have with what they attempt.

Also I think I'm just done with sidequests for now. I'm 50%ish through my second runthough and am way too interested in the story to spend time gathering eggplants and running around. I just want to yell at all the NPCS "SERIOUSLY DO YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND WHATS GOING ON HERE!?!"

Once I knew, as the player, it's been impossible to get any desire to do anything BUT continue on with the main stuff.

I want to play it now, but I think I may wait until the weekend. The girlfriend is out of town so I could just finish B, and do C and D in one night.

    One horribly, horribly depressing night.
