Erm, thanks for the recommendation but I am way too lazy to go around patching all manner of never released in US games. But I am a sucker for great game stories, so maybe I'll get around to it.
In the meantime, I'ma go back to playing The Longest Journey.
So, just decided to say forget the sidequests (for now. Still need the weapons for ending D, but will get everything on my C run.), and played a little more of my B runthrough.
In one sitting did The Aiere, Facade and the 1st half of Junk Heap.
I am seriously upset. Holy shit. Done for the night. May ask a question or two later, but just kind of hopeless and want to see what happens. Wish I could just never, ever return to the junk heap for part 2. Like, getting anxiety over it.

I want to play it now, but I think I may wait until the weekend. The girlfriend is out of town so I could just finish B, and do C and D in one night.
One horribly, horribly depressing night.
You have no idea.
Question for Rent:
On a scale of "Have a box of tissues ready" to "Alert family members in advance to have them check in on you", how sad is Ending D?
Because, I mean, getting Ending C, you kind of know how D is going to go, in a general sense. And that, if I'm right at least, makes it seem sadder than C and C made me bawl like a child.
I'm thinking now that I have LBP2, I can do ending D and then chase it with LBP2 to make some kind of twisted, bi-polar night that'll have me break even feelings-wise, since I've been holding off on D since, well, it just seems really sad.
Finally started playing this again. Just beat the first half of the game, including all the sidequests there.
...Wow. That's certainly some badass scenes and a change of pace.

In my opinion the defining emotion of each playthrough:
ending A: bittersweet sadness
ending B: horror, followed by a tiny bit of hope (you know what I'm talking about)
ending C: finality, overwhelming sadness
ending the best ending of all time holy shit it is so good goddamn
Yeah, all Ive got so far is ending A but I didn't find it too upsetting:
Sad - Human Yonah sacrificing herself, Human/Shade Nier's sadness over it, EMILLL =( =( =(
Nice - Yonah and Dad finally spending some quality time together in the grass, the world being brighter, Nier and Yonah up in the sky all happy
...and now Im realizing everything in the "Nice" catagory is more than likely not reality.
I'm pretty sure that is just a memory, since Nier doesn't have his eyepatch.
Yeah, I figured it was either a memory or some kind of weird time travel that I was yet to uncover through other endings.
The one part in the Forest of Myth where Weiss makes some comment about time moving backwards or something has stuck in my brain like it's important...dont tell me if it is or isn't though...

Alright, seriously : someone tell me how to fish. I can get it to start the minigame now, but no matter what direction I push the fish either swims away or just sits there and the bar stays the same. If at any time I hit X, it ends it immediately.
Edit : apparently the area where you get the rod and fishing quest is way too high level to fish in. Stupid game. I can land shaman fish from the quest, but I assume the sardines they want now are back in the first town or something stupid.
The thing the OP needs to add about fishing is that the analog stick is oriented with Nier facing forward. So it helps to align the camera directly behind him, but turned just enough so you can see the bobber in front of him. Then it's a matter of holding the stick in the opposite direction of the fish. If fish is directly in front of you, the stick goes straight down. If you imagine Nier being at the center of the analog stick, then draw a line through the fish's position and the center to give you an idea of where to hold the stick for it to work. The fish will move from one spot to another and then sit there for a few seconds, so you need to match the movement. The Fish HP bar with be going down when the stick's in the right spot.
Seriously, I had zero trouble with fishing. I just never did it beyond the first couple because there's no real point. That and farming, which I never touched even once.
I still have no idea why Kaine dresses like she does. How did I miss that? Ive seen the B ending explains it but it never was mentioned...
Actually once I gather my thoughts a bit there was quite a lot that I still dont think was explained, and Ive heard ending C doesnt add THAT much more...so Im wondering if I missed a lot somehow...

So, Im jonesing to see these last 2 ends and may just power through it.
On this run - can I skip all dialogue and cutscenes? Is the ending literally the only difference?
Also - one question about the B Ending, and one about a weapon I need for D.
Is there any resolution to Tyrann and Kaine? It felt kind of weird. Tyrann - a shade - spends the whole game convincing you to kill other shades, and then in the end hes just like yup, Im sad too - and thats that. In the A ending you see sad Kaine leave, and in the B ending she's not around at all. Is there an end to the story there?
Also I find it incredibly fucked up that Kaine could have understood the shade's pleas the whole game.
And I got the weapon from the damaged map quest, but just stopped doing other quests because I wanted to just see the story. Whats the other quest that gives me a weapon?

She's got boy and girl parts, so she overcompensates by showing off her femininity.
Edit- You get somewhat of a resolution between them in Ending C.
I knew she was a hemaphrodite because it leaked in the press like immediately. I remember before I even knew what the game was Kotaku having an article that explained the plot as "A guy and his hermaphrodite friend".
Where in the game was it ever really revealed? Is it vague on purpose where you can kind of figure it out by the taunting the boys do in the village? You supposed to come to the realization on your own? I just was waiting for a big moment as to WHY she keeps calling herself a freak, and it never happened. Which Im fine with - but if I didnt have it spoiled, I really don't think my mind would have ever gone THERE.

The backstory you get in NG+ hints at you that there's something odd with her body even before Tyrann. I think there was a line related to the way she dresses, but I'm not sure. Even if there is one, it's offhandedly.
So, I feel like buying a new RPG, and I've heard (mostly) good things about this and Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Could someone who has played both fill me in on which one they liked more? Does either game have any glaring deficiencies that I should know about? Thanks for the help.
How in the world have you heard mostly good things about The Last Hope?
I'll admit I played through the entire game and thoroughly enjoyed the combat and most of the gameplay outside of combat...but the story and characters are just terrible and bring it down.
Mx, the only thing making C and D different are the endings themself. The generally held advice is that just looking them up on youtube is a perfectly valid practice. But then you don't get those sweet achievement points, so...
And yeah, Kaine, much like 99% of the story in Nier, is only ever vaguely implied. A lot of the story in Nier is just kinda there for you to pick up on or not.
Although if you happen to know what sidequest I need to bang out, that would be a help.
And its not even for the achievement points - the music, the atmosphere, the whole feel of this game - even skipping things I know going for these final endings just wouldnt have the same emotional punch if I had just YouTubed it.
More reflecting on the B runthrough
For all the awful things that happen in this game - you know what chokes me up the most, and actually got some tears welling up in my eyes?
The fucking King of Facade. I dont know if Ive EVER liked a videogame character more.
I HATED Facade. I hated that stupid temple with the rules. HATED. I got the whining little brat king out of there and said fuck it, I never want to go back ever. And when the story FORCED me to, I was angry. But man - never has a game turned around the way I felt so drastically. Id like to think it's intentional. Seeing the king a little more grown up, and Fyra, and the one fucking bright spot in the whole game where you stay overnight in his castle and that shot when they're at the wedding where Kaine is resting her arm on Emils head...its all so PERFECT. And the saddest part in the entire game (so far) - the death of Fyra. She finally speaks. It was so so moving.
And you leave the king at her grave, and figure its just another terrible sad end. But then he comes back for you. Holy shit - THAT was the most emotionally charged moment I think - tied with Emils sacrifice (and the fact EMIL SAID MY FUCKING NAME).
"How many rules are there about what you can yell before dying in battle?" was so emotionally intense for me. And Neir pounding on that door. Man, it was epic.
and then in this run through - suddenly Im smacked with the bloody king, in a cutscene I never expected. And the king allows the last hope of the shades to finally stop fighting and die, and gives himself permission to die as well.
Man - its just the best subplot there is, that king's journey. I wish Cavia was still around because I would pay a billion dollars for a game based around him somehow. I know he's dead, but whatever. He was the best.

DO NOT look up ending D on youtube
ending C you can, but ending D must be experienced by yourself, it loses all thematic impact if you watch it on youtube
also you can skip everything in ending C and D runs
you can basically get all of endings C and D if you're really quick and have a well-upgraded Phoenix Spear within 3-5 hours

it's implied pretty heavily in the memories of Kaine at the beginning of playthrough B when she refers to herself as a freak and an oddity
nevermind about my weapon questions - did the quests without even realizing I got weapons. I need to buy 3 weapons from various blacksmiths and Im all ready for the D ending.

She dresses like that because Shades hate sunlight. It keeps her Shade at bay. Mostly.
That is definitely one of the few reasons she does it, yeah.
Then how come
most of the shades are running around during the day in the northern plains and such?
Not that its a big deal, I just am catching on more and more now about the different corrupted shades and the ones who left before gestalt was complete and stuff. Real interesting - every playthrough the added context makes things clearer.
And I was wrong about weapons. I need one from a quest about the sleeping king or something - Labyrinth's Song. Any idea where that quest pops up? Im reading a lot of conflicting places.
Either way I am absolutely FLYING through this playthrough for Endings C and D. I almost feel bad skipping all this great stuff - but its been 2 weeks of nothing in my XBox but Nier for the most part, and I want to just sit and read Grimoir Noir with everything all set.

Have I mentioned I love this game? I love this game.
Its really upsetting that it's 100% never getting another game made in this universe. Be it a sequel, side story, prequel (post Drakengard, pre-Neir) or anything. Its such great, great lore. Stuff like Deadly Premonition and Alan Wake both hold hope for more things in the universes - those involved are still out there talking about it and keeping hope alive.
But with Cavia shut down, that's that. Its such a shame that - as someone here said many pages back in this thread - the best work from them came too late, and out of a troll ending that NO ONE would have ever guessed could lead to something this good.

The various people who worked on the game are, at least, still in the industry, including the guy who was more or less behind the scenarios present in Drakengard and NieR, so there's always hope.
The company that bought them advertises Nier as one of their previous projects. To me, that means that if SE desires to make more games in the Drakkengard multiverse they can still get Cavia, just under a different name. The site
