As far as I know there are only two direct references to it in the game.
Wait... Nier is a sequel? My interest in this has risen dramatically.

Drakengard has a sequel. TWO sequels in fact. (But only Nier is good)

I really prefer the story with Nier being the father. I haven't played the brother version but ugly old daddy protecting his daughter is the best story, because it's unusual. How many old protagonists do we really get nowadays? Nier is like, 40 or something in this story.

Most games are better than Drakengard 2. Like, 99% of them. Since Drakengard 2 managed to only do -one- good thing
Caim's intro FMV is seriously one of my favorite FMVs ever ever ever. Hell, pretty much everything involving Caim.
And then proceed to fuck that all up.
By killing off Caim and Angelus after Caim literally kills Death.
But...
"Is it over, Caim?"

“I used to draw, hard to admit that I used to draw...”
So... I haven't played this, but I just finished reading through Dark Id's LP of it. Thoughts:
I notice a lot of people in this thread and elsewhere talking about the main character turning out to be a horrible monster, and Nier Replicant does have his share of blame, but I feel the lion's share of it belongs with the Shadowlord, Devola, and Popola. Nier Replicant at least has the excuse of ignorance, while those three knew exactly what was going on and made no real attempt to resolve things peacefully.
Just look at the final confrontation with the twins. Nier doesn't want to fight them, and they're the only people in the world who might actually be able to get through to him. So do they bother telling him that most Shades aren't just "twisted remnants" of human beings, they're sentient and peaceful people? Or that the twins' deaths will lead to the extinction of the Replicants? Or that the Shadowlord (and who came up with that name anyway?) abducted Yonah in order to save his own Yonah's life, and that Yonah Replicant would be long dead if not for him? Of course not. Instead, they drop a few bits of exposition about Replicants and Gestalts, information they even acknowledge isn't going to make any sense to Nier, and then initiate the violence.
Shadowlord's just as bad. There had to be plenty of ways Devola and Popola could've snuck him into the Village to get to Yonah, or gotten her out. But instead he opts to assault the place with an army and the Jack of Hearts, killing innocent people en masse. Nier Replicant didn't know the Gestalts he was killing were sentient, but Nier Gestalt has no such excuse for slaughtering Replicants.
It's easy to blame Nier because he's behind so much of the bloodshed, but if the Shades had made any real attempts at peace and understanding in the last millennium (besides a few holing up in the Aerie), with Devola and Popola working as intermediaries, all the tragedy could have been avoided.

Well yeah, that and the wolves bullshit are part of the big narrative flaws of Nier that allows a game like 999 to overtake it in overall narrative quality.
Here's a reasonable explanation of the three. It's not that Devola and Popola didn't want to tell Nier Replicant about the secrets of the world. It's that they can't. They're androids, they're only programmed to follow protocol and that's it, and revealing the secrets of Gestalts and Replicants was verbotted in their original programming.
You might as well expect them to say "I can't let you do that, Nier."
By the time they realized that they could feel human emotions at the end, that they might actually have a semblance of free will, it's too late. There's no stopping. NOTHING STOPS.
The Shadowlord probably viewed all the replicants as puppets. They're not even human, they're soulless automatons, like robots. Why would a HUMAN respect a robot that humanity created and controlled? It's like respecting a laptop computer.
And thus, this lack of communication leads to tragedy and disaster. Which is an effective message in this, as it applies in life. Many fear or disrespect the other to actually just talk and try diplomacy, which is the better way to solve problems. Human nature destroys itself.
Also the real blame lies with Kaine she knew it all along and said fuck it kill everything. Nihilism and lack of communication yet again.
My local Blockbusters are closing down, and they're selling their bromides/placards:
I think with enough of these Nier cards, one can make those neat 3D dioramas with the pop-up cutouts overlayed on top.

Drakengard II does have seriously fantastic music, though. Like up there with Nier.
I have had a super slow morning and missed this game so much i just re-read the first 27 pages of this and re-lived Rent discovering the game, and then myself discovering it, and then others all joining in.
I wish I could just re-live everything. This game was the greatest.

I actually only ever read text LP's. I usually dont have time to watch someone play something, but plenty of time to silently read it. But the only two Ive ever found (and loved) were someones Jurassic Park: Operaton Genesis one, and Dark Id's DRAKENGARD, which is the best ever.
But this - oh I will make the time. This will easily be something I treat like a TV show, setting aside time for every installment with a nice frosty mug of a good brew in a comfy chair.
If it goes up on YouTube I will absolutely be watching it through my XBox on my big TV.

This game finally found its way into my PS3. Please tell me that I don't have to do the sandstorm walk or the temple of trials in the new game+ stuff. So very slow and boring. Not Dragon Age fade sequence bad, but still not something I want to play again.
Maybe I'm just jaded because I wanted to leave for dinner shortly after the sandstorm walk and there were no bloody save points. Curse you quick run trophy that I've probably already failed!

No you won't. There's a very definitive mid-point of the game and that's where you'll start any New Game+ runs.
My quest OCD will be / is my undoing for the quick run trophy anyhow. I just didn't want to drive the last nail in that coffin by leaving the game on pause for a couple of hours. I have a problem :P

Well if you want to do all the quests you should finish all of the first half sidequests before you reach the midway point.

Sooooo. I decided that I am going to play through this game from start to finish!
I'm pretty sure I'm at the halfway point, so I'm currently working on the sidequests available, but I'm only at 30% or so. I assume that 50% progress is all of the sidequests for the first half of the game? The point I am at, story-wise, is:
I've been told to go to the mansion where everything goes black and white, as Yonah got a letter from her friend that lives there. I should finish up before going there, right?
As for sidequests, I've been having a little trouble with a couple in Facade.
The Littlest Hero - ran all around the desert, didn't see anything. I assume this is because I had the Runaway Boy quest active, and I chased HIM around the desert, so it wouldn't trigger the Littlest Hero event, if there is one? If he's not in the desert (and the quest description says he's out there fighting wolves), then... where is he?
The other quest is about finding a little girl that was lost, and has a golden ring on one finger. I ran all around Facade and didn't find anything (again, the Runaway quest was active at the time, so maybe I got the events for that quest instead) so if she's in Facade, I guess I'll look again after work. If not... where did she run off to?
There's so much about this game that is just amazing, despite the lack of polish and the grind-options. Little things, like how the song Devola sings stops when you talk to her, though her music continues, then her singing joins in again once you stop the conversation? That's amazing, and the game is full of it. Also, Shades.
I could have sworn that swarms of Shades initially attacked me on sight, then after a while, started running away from me and refusing to engage. But now they're back to faceraping me the moment they see me. The stuff they drop, though. I don't want to fight them. Colouring books, school bags, um... what? Also (sidequest spoiler, letter for a lover in the Aerie):
Took the letter and the freesia to the woman's house. She's not there. Get attacked by a massive Shade on the way out. It's holding a freesia. I DO NOT LIKE WHERE THIS IS GOING. (I like where this is going.)
So yeah, really enjoying it. The Forest of Myth was
I finished the Fragile Package 3 sidequest pretty easily too, although...
There was a point where I was sprinting across the desert with wolves ON ALL SIDES and they kept trying to HERD ME AWAY from the path to Facade and I couldn't stop running in case one of them butted me and Kainé was behind us throwing magic and I was running and running and STOP TRYING TO MAKE ME TURN AROUND WOLVES and then I got to the gate.
Sooooo. I decided that I am going to play through this game from start to finish!

You can finish the mansion. Just don't do any plot things after that and finish your sidequests.

The Littlest Hero starts right after you leave Facade, so finish up Runaway Boy then enter and exit Facade. You'll see your target running towards the wolves den area.
The Missing Girl quest has MULTIPLE areas you have to examine. You'll have to find the reddish puddle in the lowest levels of Facade to start it off. Just keep checking your quest icons to see where you need to go.
There's one sidequest that Devola doesn't talk to you about at all.
In Seafront, turning down the patch to the Lighthouse but just before it starts to spiral around up the hill, the little side area that has an overlook of the town. There's a man there with a quest. You have to talk to him, leave the area and return, talk to him again, leave the area and return again, then talk to him a third time. Then the quest will start.

Currently at 40% sidequests!
Finished up the two in Facade I was having trouble with, it was (as I thought, and B:L confirmed) a case of leaving and returning, to trigger them. The Runaway Boy quest was active in both areas, and it seems that only one 'event quest' can be active at a time in a given area.
Currently trolling around to see which ones I've missed. And Aistan, Devola just sent me on that quest! however, the other one that she had isn't active, I guess I have to walk there and back again. But those are the only two she's giving me and I'm nowhere near 51%. Only on the third fishing quest, and one of my outstanding quests involves rare drops from goats and another involves sharks.
The point you are at is not the point of no return, actually. The game is nice in this regard in that when you do get to that point, a note pops up saying "hey, you can't go back after this spot, are you sure you want to keep going?" Feel free to head into the mansion.

44%! Gonna let it rest until tomorrow now, I think. Been playing since I got back from work.
Plan for tomorrow: Fish for some Black Bass, then some Sardines, use the Sardines to catch Sharks, help out a deluded man with his lust for a lover with REALLY EXPENSIVE TASTES (I have the item, just need to hand it over), then take a letter to the Lighthouse Lady.
I lied to her SO HARD last time I spoke to her.
Then I shall max up the difficulty, and farm goats for the last hides I need - but probably after upgrading Faith to level 3. That is one decent sword. Thanks for the help!

Why am I not at home playing this game?
Edit: And now I am. And Nier's birthday. Ow. (Diary entry)
I'll concede that there are people who truly consider this game to have the best story of this generation. And I'm sure that I'll be missing out. But the actual game part (a part that matters a lot, I might add) is some of the dullest dull that ever dulled. It is seriously down there with some of the most bland, generic dreck I've played this generation, like X-Blades and Eat Lead.
It'd be nice if someone could come along and put an amazing story into an amazing game. It seems that every time someone mentions a fantastic plot, it's usually tied to a game that's pretty shit (999, Alan Wake, Nier, etc.)

You think 999 is a bad game? Well, there's no accounting for personal tastes.
The puzzles are brilliant, and well incorporated into the fight against time.
Nier isn't the best story of the generation or anything(I'd give that honor to Catherine), but it's dang high up there, especially in presentation.
I'd say give it time(which I did, and I felt like you at first), but whatever floats you.
