DVD-ROM and upconverting

I've never bothered to install a dvd-rom into my computer, but with the recent purchase of a 32' hdtv that also poses as my monitor, I figure it's a step forward in laziness. Since I am using this as my monitor, are there any dvd-roms out there that upconvert?
Forgive me if I'm asking a silly question, but I've never gotten into the realm of watching dvd's through a computer.

The DVD-ROM drive itself just allows the computer to access the disc. But, yes, pretty much any software DVD player will up-convert to your current resolution (with the exception of ATi DVD Player which bitches if you try to play a DVD over component above 480p).
EDIT: simplified version of above: upconverting is something that the software does, so any drive will do just fine really.

you are the reason why game publishers are still release 6 CD games instead of 1 DVD.

Gamestop has enough clout that I cannot simply ignore them because their practices affect the market and, by extension, ME, whether I boycott them or not.
This is a characteristic of business in the era of massive corporations--"voting with your dollars" by shopping elsewhere is no longer enough.
My continued business at the local hardware store isn't going to keep Wal-Mart from driving them out of business. Times ten million, all over the country, all over the world. The only way consumers and small business owners can compete with Wal-Mart is with organized resistance on a large scale.
Oh yeah, get this. Do you know why US PC game publishers still manufacture their games on CD in large part (as opposed to Europe, in which games mostly come on DVD)? I learned this when I met with CDV Software in mid December.
The entire reason games still come out on CD is because of Walmart. There is a high return rate of DVD-ROM titles at Walmarts across the country, so publishers tend to stick to CD whenever possible.
It's becoming less and less of an issue, and the PR guy told me that soon, games will reach a point where it is ridiculous to imagine that someone could run a game with their computer if it doesn't have a DVD-ROM drive anyway, but right now and for the last few years, Walmart is THE reason we have been getting 4-6 CD games.
So, yeah, big companies can fuck things up for everyone.
