[solved] How can I change my LIVE subscription from Gold to Silver?

Long story short, my LIVE account is suspended right now. My Xbox 360 has been broken for nearly three months and my 12-month renewal popped up in that time. Also, the card I was using for that account had expired right before the renewal. Since I didn't have an Xbox 360 anyway, I kind of felt like the problem solved itself: they couldn't charge me, and I didn't need the subscription anymore.

Maybe that wasn't the best way of handling the situation, I dunno, but I was lazy.

Fast forward to today. I bought GTAIV for the PC via Steam. I'm trying to log in to LIVE via GFWL and I'm getting an "account suspended" message which provides an Update Profile button. Clicking that launches my web browser and takes me directly to a page to update my billing information. No mention about Silver or downgrading to Silver or anything except "hey, change your credit card info." In fact, it doesn't even provide a billing total, which I find obnoxious and makes me not want to renew even if my Xbox 360 was working.

Anyway, AFAIK, I don't need a Gold membership just to log into my Gamertag via GFWL, right? That's all I'm trying to do here.

Also, can anyone point me toward what benefits Gold confers over Silver? I honestly can't remember anymore.

Solved.

I'm impatient. I called them. I argued. They canceled my "subscription" and reverted me back to Silver status.
