They made an Indiana Jones with the original writers, it didnt turn out so well.
Times are different any any sequel would more than likely be incredibly sanitised and dull.

1988 qualifies as "a different time" now? Last I checked, the late '80s weren't regarded as some kind of free-wheeling era where anything was acceptable either.
A more recent example, I'm watching Kindergarten Cop which is 1990 I believe. Its obviously a family comedy,it was rated 12 in the UK and PG-13 in the US, but it has people dealing bags of a suspicious white substance quite clearly on screen and gun fights. They wouldn't make a film aimed at family in this age rating with these elements because it wouldn't fly anymore. Most people wouldn't care but psycho-parents and press would focus on and blow up the child-abuse sub-plot, the on-screen bags of coke ad I think there are gun battles to the death as well.
EDIT: ANd now theres a corpse.
EDIT: And a father holding his boy at gunpoint. Then his gunshot death, then the grandmas baseball bat beatdown and two gunshot wounds to the hero.
