Tonight was such a terrible night: I log on and find that the person in 1st place in my ladder is only like 50 points up on me so I decide I'm going to play enough games to pass him. Fast forward two games and I'm 0-2 and have dropped 2 places from lost points. I manage to win the 3rd game to pull back up to 2nd in my ladder but I gave up after that. I think both loses were a matter of being to aggressive, suiciding my army against chokes, rallying outside their base to keep the pressure on; instead of building my econ and teching.
This is getting ridiculous, I can't play TvT I have tried everything. An all in marine rush gets countered by cloaking banshees...that move away from your scan. FUCK
TvT is pretty weird. You either have to go for air superiority with mass Viking and Tanks to hold the ground, or go Siege Tanks with Thor support (using Marines/Turrets for early AA until you get that expo up). I tend to do a siege expand (with marines from a reactor barracks) into two port Viking/Banshee, adding more Tech Lab Ports as the money gets high. Always more Vikings than Banshees. Or if I scout a second Barracks going down I rush to Banshees with a Bunkered ramp and econ harass.
Haven't played a ton of them yet, but my record isn't bad in TvT.
Im finding a marauder tank contain with quick mass vikings tends to work decently well. Hell, I even throw down sensor towers and missile turrets in a ring around their base to watch for floating command centers trying to expand.
I really have trouble against Zerg, they go lings so I get hellions for harass (I usually do anyways) and then they get roaches so I get Thors and then they get infestors...then I lost. Or I might get air but if I do they get Hydras. I think I might be playing too responsive but it just feels like I am forced to really. I think I need to force them to counter my ground and then build a counter to the counter, am i doin it rite?

you can usually focus down the infestors if they try to take down your thors, unless his wall is REALLY massive
besides, then you should have tanks anyways to shoot down the buggers
I don't use tanks too much actually, they just feel too slow and they don't do enough damage. Like a group of 12 marauders can stim up and probably take out a group of four tanks, although I suppose placement is a big deal but I just am too slow.
So does Battle.net take a little while to register SC2 accounts? I just added my key and it's showing up in the account management page, but when I try to log in I get a message saying something like
this battle.net account does not include an associated copy of starcraft II
Maybe it's because this is a new Battle.net account... Guess I'll just cross my fingers and wait.

For Terran players...what is the radius of Scanenr Sweep compared to the animation? Does it reveal about as much as the animation? if its more, how much further out does it reveal?
huh, just checked my APM for the first time. I sit at around 60.
I always have excess minerals though. I guess I do mass marines a lot...
also, I noticed my APM actually drops during battles. I guess I have a bad habit of liking to watch them

The APM counter in SC2 doesn't record correctly because it's defaulted at Fast instead of Faster. This means your APM is recorded artificially lower by something like 25%. They said they would patch this soon however.
Another difference is that some SC:BW APM counters ignored the first two minutes because there isn't much to do besides spam and would lower the average. SC2 does not do this.
If you think about it though, 60 APM means you're clicking, selecting, or building something once per second. Takes 2 Actions to move your army from point A to B, 2 to make an SCV, 3 to drop a Mule, etc. 60 SC:BW APM is 'reading every tooltip' slow. One of my friends plays at 64 APM average. You probably play much faster than that.

I don't have exact numbers on the size of the animation, but the scanner sweep vision reveal according to the map editor is 13 (that is grid squares in radius, so that is 6.5 pylons in a line for the radius if you need comparison). Its pretty huge and by my eye it looks about twice the size of the main circle you actually see. If my explanation doesn't work for you, you can go load up a replay where a terran scanner sweeps you and look at it from their vision.

no that helps.
just wanted to see if a terran could see my tech buildings when he scans my nexus
I managed to get to Gold 1v1 from Silver, and now it seems like every 2/3 games are ZvZ.
The match always seems to come down to who spams more Zergling/Roach.
Though I did have one match where a whole mass of speedlings managed to kill my army of roaches, as the map had no ramp to funnel them through. They got the surround and my roaches were too spread out.

New best thing ever: Having a mass (read: 4) bunkers with 6 marines apeice in them and watching an attack smash itself to bits against your ramp. Then, salvaging the bunkers and taking the 24 guys (plus a couple tanks) to wreck the enemy base.
I should post the 2v2 game that me and Choco did over the weekend. It took an hour.
Basically I was massing Lings and Mutas, he was massing MMM against mass Zealots and Marines. We finally pushed through the opponents ramp (Twilight Fortress, of course!) and destroyed it. But the game didn't end.
Why?
Because the Protoss player had gone to the side double expo and massed cannons and star gates. I'm talking atleast 30 cannons and 4 star gates with a fleat beacon. He was pumping out carriers and we couldn't bust down his wall. We should have gone with a combo of Nukes and Broodlords, but I didn't think about it at the time. So we kept trying to push in with the units we had. It wasn't until I supply capped and added Hydras to the battle that we were able to overwhelm him.
protoss players making power grids of photon cannons is somehow even more annoying than a terran playing "find the cc" to me
Well what pissed me off was when I watched in the replay. In the game, they had expos there, we knew that so we took them out. Then we tried to attack the main base but we were pushed back. So while we built up more forces, the Protoss player re-expanded and started making the photon cannon grid unknown to us. Had we bothered to check, we could have stomped it out before it was too late.

build a couple vikings out of your first port then add a tech lab and get a raven. later you can start using cloaked banshees of your own if he hasn't prepared for it.
Is there anyway to play TvT without banshees or quick ports in general? I try and do mech usually, but I feel as though it has significant vulnerabilities, especially earlier when I don't have enough siege tanks.
I don't mind when the other player is in a position where defeat is inevitable, but they strive to prolong their survival.
Gives some time to wind down while you crack their defenses, hunt down their stray buildings.
This isn't really true, if you wind down you're giving him a chance to comeback - if you do, and your opponent wins, you'll really be angry. That's why it's so annoying when someone doesn't leave, sometimes you have to go on playing for up to 10 minutes or more at full speed even though you know they have virtually no way to come back.
I am terrible at this game. The last RTS I played even semi-seriously was AOK. I was decent at it, but the SC2 hotkeys and interface seem completely counter-intuitive to me. Is playing and losing horribly still the best way to build my skill?

Um... not really. Once it becomes obvious that it's extremely hard, you're supposed to read faqs, watch other people's strategies, and learn from them. The hotkeys seem fine for me, and the placement matches should match you up with people of your league.

An infantry/siege tank push is really devastating if you can do it early enough.

it seems to fit their style so well in sc2...not like they're any threat in t1 anyways unless you cheese
Yeah, i really like single base teching with zerg, though it's not so great on the large maps.
edit: btw what time is the final tomorrow?
oh, i meant more of an FE, + 3-4 spine crawlers sort of way to play
lets you tech up without really worrying
unless, like i learned in tournament, you're on scrap station where putting it halfway between your main and your expo just won't cut it
