Whatever. If you ever get the game, you'll see I was right. You won't ever admit it, but you'll see.

    lol...

oh man, I started Dead To Rights: Retribution instead of something that's NOT a shooter. Popping the achievement for having the dog fatally gnaw on somebody's nads was amusing, to say the least. what kind of person trains a dog to do that? pretty fun so far. don't think it'll take too long to get through it either. I figure I can finish it within the week, maybe...

goal is 15,000 GS by the end of the year with a 90% completion rate... should be interesting.

According to trueachievements my #1 game is Game Room and I have 755/1000 (working on the Challenges with another Penny Arcade Forum user has been very fun). That's probably just because a lot of people have played a little of it without getting barely any achievements, but I will take it.

I have played 15 hours of games so far and it feels more like 150. Arcade games are haaaaaaaaaaaard. My favorites are Flak Attack, Trick Trap, Twinbee, Twinbee Detana, Food Fight and Centipede/Millipede. Asteroids/Tempest are pretty fun too. I would buy tons more if they were a little bit cheaper (especially 2600 games, if they were 80 points each I would probably buy a couple dozen of them).

Speaking of deadly mountains, I'm now up to 365gs in Guitar Hero 3. I just did left-handed mode on Easy and have to go back and five star some of the songs. Still have medium too. Whoever thought of these achievements should die in a fire.

wow, 500 online wins on GH3? do people still play GH3 online?

After my disc for GoW2 cracked I stopped playing it, got a new copy with the maps and jumped back into it since it's under 50% completion... mistake. It's not like riding a bike. Doesn't help that I only cleared the SP campaign and did minimal MP... but yeesh. I get the feeling that'll be staying sub-50%. I lost my way to level 12 or so this weekend. It may have been harder because I was trying to win three games of wingman for that achievement, of which I only won one... back in 2008. if I decide to run with it a lot of the achieves can be done vs bots... I think. I dunno. it really helped to burn me out on shooters.

You'd be surprised how many of the Gears 2 achievements you'll get if you're actively going for them. I always thought I'd never get most of the hard ones but I'm on track for 1000/1000 before Gears 3 launches (I just need Seriously 2.0). Just make sure you have a checklist handy for the ones that require you to win on certain maps, especially the Annex one and the Horde waves. Nothing more annoying than completing fifty levels of Horde, having the ticker pop 49/50 and not knowing which wave you need. I'll happily play some with you if you want (you should friend the Gears PA metatag).

I gave up on Black College Football: The Xperience after only 2 days. I've only owned a football game on the original Game Boy and NFL 2k1, and even those had better friendly AI than this. The only redeeming factor was the music. Scoring a touchdown only to be rewarded with the drumline version of "Word Up" never got old.

Finished my second playthrough of Prey. Not a great game, but not actively painful to play through on hard. It helps that you can't really die. Also ground out a couple of SFIV online achievements. I'm trying, for reasons unclear, to get my True Achievements completion ratio above 85% on all games before starting one of three new games sitting by my 360 I haven't played yet.

While I'm here, does anyone want to bang out the Beautiful Katamari online achievements?

Anyone play Hexic? I finally fired it up after owning it for free for like four years or so.

After playing a game for 35 minutes, I managed to score 20,000 points or so. There's an achievement for getting a million points across all games.

...will cheevo hunting in that game drive me mad? The "match three black pearls" one sounds insane too (you only get them by matching six white stars, and you only get white stars by matching six).

    boo. quitter! QUITTER! :p

Willeth: I'm working on DTR: Retribution during the week, but since there are 20x and 25x experience weekends coming up for GoW, I'll likely be hitting that up to tie up those achievement loose ends. Moreso the 25x weekend since this weekend is gonna be busy.

cloudeagle: Grand Pearl Pooba (I think that's the one you're talking about) is both hard to get, and yet not as rare as one would think given how large of a install base Hexic has.

edit: oh nope, you're not talking about that one. the one you're talking about is only medium insane. :P

Having gotten 200/200 on Hexic HD, I suppose my opinions might be worth something.

The 'million points over all games' achievement is actually surprisingly easy. You're almost certain to get it in the course of clearing off all the other achievements. The tough ones to get are the two that require you to create black pearls and the one where you need to score 75,000 points in the timed mode.

As to whether it'll drive you mad...? That really depends on whether or not you enjoy playing Hexic. As I recall it took me about a month or two of semi regular play to become good enough to finally clear off all the achievements.

I've still not managed to get consistent enough to get the poobah. Every time I get close to making half a grid it collapses on itself and I don't have the patience.

There are some good places with info about various Hexic grid strategies. I very nearly did it myself, but I was intentionally avoiding it so I could get a specific total.

Kitsuna probably has better practical advice, but I can say that the more you play with a plan in mind, the better you end up.

I don't know whether Cloudeagle is going to take the plunge into Hexic HD, but if he does, here's what I'd recommend.

Step 1: Learn to make Silver Stars. Don't try doing anything with them just yet, just learn to make them. Ideally you want to be able to make 8-10 Silver Stars by the time you're mid way through level 2. It's pretty much impossible to describe how to do this, but look for partially completed starflowers and try to rotate/drop the right pieces into place to complete them.

Step 2: Get two Silver Stars together and learn how to starwalk. Not only does it allow you to move Silver Stars into place, but you can - with effort - move other pieces around as well. It's a handy skill to have to help make Silver Stars early on.

Step 3: Learn to be patient and carefully check moves before you make them. As Willeth will no doubt tell you, making moves without checking whether they'll make unintended combo's first can wreck a lot a hard work in a heartbeat. I'm pretty good at Hexic - good enough that I can usually get a Grand Pearl Pooh-bah on every game within about 30-40 minutes, but only if I'm paying the game full attention and excising patience. If my attention is wandering even slightly or I'm trying to hurry, things almost always end up going very badly wrong.

Step 4: Learn to make the Master Grid. If you want the Grand Pearl Pooh-bah achievement, you pretty much need to be able to make a 4x4 or Master Grid, and the Master Grid is hands down the better option.

    http://www.youtube.com/user/QSGWorldwide#p/u/12/6gINmNobO0s

The above videos are good ones to study. It's a two part set that demonstrates how to get to a complete Master Grid from the beginning of the game. They show off how to make Silver Stars and have plenty of examples of Starwalking and last but not least shows off a great method of Bomb Defense.

I'm sick of playing Mafia II. It wasn't all that good of a game and the DLC is just tedious at this point.

  • Santa ClaustrophobiaSanta Claustrophobia Ho Ho Ho Disconnecting from Xbox LIVERegistered User regular
Like I told you, the 1000 miles is the worst one (of the DLC). Just pick a car you like and find a long route around the city. With the right route, you can pick up at least 10 miles per circuit and every two or three laps, fill up on gas. It's dull, but the radio stations are pretty decent if you like that sort of thing.

For just 10 points, though, it's easily amongst the worst kind of achievements.

Can't help but picture the developers that think of such unoriginal, boring and completely pointless achievements like that, as some sort of Bond-esque supervillain sitting in a fancy chair while stroking his cat, and laughing a maniacal laughter.

Exploration-style achievements are usually popped in time with other achievements, so they're not really all that bad, imo. It's really a matter of design. I dunno much about Mafia II since I wasn't interested in it, but usually if for achievements like that there's enough other stuff to do to kinda fill it out out over the course of playing the game. So while you progress through doing the other story/collections/etc, you get a fair bit of the leg work done. What really screws the pacing of those achievements up though is using a guide, so the wandering and all just isn't there. In this case though, it seems kind of off, especially since it's DLC.

On that note I have most of DTR: Retribution done, just need to wrap up the 5,000,000 points and 500,000 bonus mode points achieves. Then it's... on to who knows. I'm about 14k from 100k GS, but still only 82% completion percent. bleh,

I picked back up World at War and was able to bring it from 700 points to almost the full 1500 thanks to the sale on the map packs. I really enjoy the Zombies mode and I finally went back and finished the last 5 missions I needed on Veteran. The last three missions in that game are complete bullshit on Veteran, but at least now I've completed all of them since MW1.

The 1000 miles achievement in Mafia II is shit since it isn't cumulative and can only be done in Jimmy's Vendetta. At most you'll drive 100 miles doing everything in the DLC.

Pretty much. There isn't even much in the way of a story to keep a player interested. It's just a collection of 'challenges' and practically none of them require much driving. You literally have to spend hours just driving around in circles and dealing with the shitty driver AI.

I could see a "drive 1000" miles achieve on a DLC pack that included like, some sandbox racing or something, but yea... outside of that it's a tad extreme.

and I saw you say you have to put gas in the car? Man, I haven't heard of that being in a game since Vette!... lol. that game was fun. :o

But don't get me started on that game. I'll be talking about it all night. (I am on a leisurely third playthrough of it to pick up the final achievements.)

    the pickles? lol... okay.

and bleh, the more I'm looking at its achieve list to plan a timetable, the more my interest in buying GoW 3 wanes. there's already at least 100 gs right off the bat that I'm sure already not going to invest the time into getting.

having reached my fill of GoW 2 for the night, I've popped in Lost Planet 1. Gonna try and beat it on Extreme mode, heh.

I haven't got 1000/1000 in DE yet :( Minding, I have been a bit lazy with getting achievements and been playing DE, Dead Island and now Gears of War concurrently. So much achievements to get, so little time to get them in.

I don't either so you're not alone. Pacifist bugged out and I had no desire to run through it again right away.

Been playing Lost Planet on Extreme still. Will probably wrap that up tonight or tomorrow night. It's been a while since I've played a game that's actually challenged me, in that it's absurdly cheap and cheesy at times. But it has a reverse difficulty curve since better weapons and a lot more T-ENG are available from the start of the later stages.

If I beat that tonight, then it's time to pop in the Gears.

lol, yea... there are no dataposts on Extreme difficulty, so you need to move quickly while still killing and/or gathering enough T-ENG to get through the level. Once you find the right balance of aggression and fight evasion it's not that bad. Most of the stages were generally easy enough to get through... the boss battles were a massive pain in the ass, especially the first two. The later bosses give you tools that allow you do a far better job of taking them out efficiently (VS+VS Shotties is the combo that makes nearly all the bosses butter).

Once you know how to beat the bosses on extreme, and you get through a stage with the gear and/or enough T-ENG to win you're good. Knowing when/if you may need to roll back and play through a stage again to get a better start on a boss also helps immensely. A lot of the difficulty that I encountered with earlier bosses came because I was coming into fighting them with 1k - 2k ish T-ENG, and not enough offensive output to drop the boss or energy to take enough hits to aggressively pursue them, or survive the time when the boss's attack phases through a wall or jumps on or their minions manage to juggle you until you die.

It definitely got frustrating though. I'm also doing the target marks while I'm at it.
