There's a medal for participating in events. It was glitched the other day and giving one credit for each game played. Everything else can by onyxes in private games.

Yea, the glitch made what would have been a ~6 month achievement into a 2 day for some people.

I thought that private play didn't count toward your medal counts, but I was only told that and never tested it myself. It's not as bad if that's the case though. It'll still be a chore to do, for sure.

Yea, possibly. Some of the medals would still require a lot of real time to get, especially the play N matches ones.

I've been looking through my games, and with all the talk of Braid over at the industry thread I'm thinking about printing up a quick run through guide and finally getting that speed run achievement so i can be done with the game forever.

Has anyone here done it? How hair pullingly irritating is it?

From memory the Braid run is all about memorisation. The levels don't change but it's a pretty tight deadline. If you play along with a guide you'll probably be fine.

In case you haven't heard, here's the absolutely stupid list of shit you have to do for Seriously 3.0:
To gain this Achievement, he'd need to reach rank 100, a rank earned through dedication in his mission and in his competitive contests (we call them multiplayer). But reaching 100 would be easy compared to what he'd have to do to earn all his Onyx medals.

The Onyx medals would be tough. He could kill his enemies with a pistol a hundred times and he'd get just a bronze. Five hundred would just get silver. He needed 6,000 pistol kills for that Onyx.

And that was just one Onyx medal. Seriously 3.0 would require him to get all of them. How much? The Epic Games forums had the daunting, unofficial tally: 6,000 kills with the Lancer, 6,000 with the Hammerburst, 6,000 with the Retro Lancer, 6,000 with the Gnasher Shotgun, and 6,000 with the Sawed-Off Shotgun.

That too would not be enough. He'd have to execute 6,000 enemies (including 500 nemeses), and take 1,500 enemy leaders captive. He'd have to participate in 30 Gears of War 3 events and be an MVP in competitive combat 500 times. He'd have to play at least 4,000 of those matches and win 3,000 of them, holding the enemy side to no wins in a multi-round match at least 2,500 times.

He could not be weary or sloppy. He'd have to score 6,000 headshots, 6,000 kills with heavy weapons, 6,000 with explosives and 6,000 specifically with weapons found on the competitive battlefield. With a sharp eye he'd have to "spot" 12,000 bad guys, kill 3,000 with fire and destroy 1,000 grenades. He'd have to kill 1,000 enemies while holding a captive. He'd have to win 500 rounds of Capture the Leader and never be taken captive in 1,500 of those matches (but he'd have to capture 1,500 opposing leaders).

He'd have to be slightly kind, reviving his downed allies 1,200 times and assisting them in their kills in competitive combat at least 5,000 times. In Capture the Leader, he'd have to save a captured leader 1,200 times, making sure to try that style of competition 3,000 times.

He'd have to spend the most time in cover in a match 600 times, perfect the reloading of his weapon 25,000 times.

Rest would still not be an option. He'd have to compete in King of the Hill 3,000 times and Warzone in another 3,000; the same for Execution and Team Deathmatch. He'd have to be the last man standing on his team 3,000 times. He'd also have to get the first kill 3,000 times.

The Seriously 3.0 warrior would have to fight the Horde. He'd have to beat all of its 50 waves at their Master difficulty; conquering 2,000 waves of that Horde during his career. He would have to start a base 500 times, build 1,000 fences, turrets or what have you and earn $5,000,000 while completing 100 mid-Horde challenges.

If all of this seemed easy to him, he'd be a madman and presumptuous. There's more. He'd have to finish Beast mode at Killer difficulty, knocking through 600 waves overall, chomping through 3,000 fences, turrets or what have you and reviving or healing his pals 600 times. He'd be killing 1,100 people, earning $1,000,000. He'd have to unlock the chance to control the most beastly beasts 75 times.

He'd have to re-fight his war, for points. In Campaign Arcade mode, he'd need to earn 7.5 million points and be the top point-getter of his party 240 times. He'd have to hit his max multiplier 100 times. He'd have to play that Arcade mode 500 times overall. He would be expected to finish one of his campaign's chapters 240 times, ripping through the whole campaign on its hardest, Insane mode at least once—maybe that twice, because he'd have to do it on Arcade. Oh, and he'd have to manipulate object in the campaign 2,000 times.

He would just have a ton to do, including stomping on bad guys' heads at least 3,000 times.

But at least he'd have an advantage if he was or pretended to be a she, because he'd (or she'd) have to fight as a woman in multiplayer 1,000 times.

Then and only then, our hero would have Achieved Seriously 3.0.

That is actually the kind of achievement that Microsoft doesn't like. However, their list of standards for achievements are more like soft guidelines. In the end, the only thing that matters is that it can be unlocked (though the ability to be unlocked far into the future [I'm looking at you EA] isn't a concern).

Really? Because they don't seem to care too much when games are released with glitched unachievable achievements. I'd think if they actually cared they'd mandate that such things be patched out.

When MS goes through the submission process, the one thing that almost always gets sent back to the publisher is a waiver-claim that all achievements are unlockable. A statement that the dev/pub guarantees that an achievement can be unlocked normally. At the end of the day, it's about whether or not the achievement is unlockable via normal gameplay. MS doesn't test for this so the burden is on the dev/pub.

Microsoft does not test achievements. More specifically, any that do not unlock while they're looking at will be sent back as a 'failure' so that it becomes the dev/pub's responsibility to ensure that they unlock properly.

Microsoft's actual standards for achievements are that a retail game must have 1000 of them. That's the only thing they won't back down on. There are others for how many achievements in total, but those get waived quite easily.

In this situation, if the achievement is buggy, there is no way for Microsoft to find this out. On top of that, it's probably only tested by using devkit cheats to trigger the specific situations (or, if they have any sense, put everything on the cusp and then let the player actually do it for real). However, using devkit cheats can skip something that would have actually cause a bug.

Microsoft should be more stringent on the kinds of achievements they allow, but they don't. If this one is buggy, then that isn't on Microsoft.

Also, I have never encountered a buggy achievement except for one. I was just playing MUA2 and the 'beat 12 bosses without revival' didn't unlock as expected. However, restarting the game (and clearing the cache...you'd be surprised how many 'bugs' that fixes) from the beginning eventually unlocked it on the second boss.

That still isn't on Microsoft. Especially since the game itself is extremely horrible about tracking the information you need to know.

Any achievement I thought I was supposed to unlock and didn't turned out to be that I was doing something wrong.

  • JHunzJHunz Registered User regular
I'm not blaming them for not testing the achievements - given some achievements I've seen (and gotten) that would be a ludicrous QA burden. But I hope that they at least charge a publisher some major bucks if they lied on that waiver and don't bother to get the game patched.

Some examples of truly impossible achievements, by the way:
Rayman Raving Rabbids (unlocking the last 3(?) achievements require getting more challenge points than can actually be obtained)
Smash TV (and it's the ridiculously hard one too, which would piss me off sooooooo much if I met the requirements and it didn't unlock)

It truly is a crappy achievement when it comes to point value vs effort. It's only saving grace is that some of it may be mitigated via life-cycle (more DLC will have content that will continue to apply toward it), but even then that's an absurd amount of gears to play, and thankfully it's not on a game whose MP isn't going to be sustainable for the time investment required to get it (EG: Most of Armored Core: For Answer's achieves).

I don't know what kind of punishments, if any, MS metes out. Also, consider that going from, say, 30 in-house testers to 300,000 'testers' means that certain factors will pop up that would've been nearly impossible to get before shipping.

And probably seven of ten times a buggy achievement is because the player is doing it wrong, including activating cheats. Two of ten is probably a bug developing in a combination of factors that were simply missed during testing and just happened to hit the 'jackpot'. The rest may be a truly bugged achievement that just won't unlock ever.

In most broken achievement cases, the cause is identified and a fix is 'issued'. Either by workaround or even up to a title update.

As a single achievement, it beats out Rumble Roses combined.

I don't think appealing to the 'hardcore' like that is a worthwhile effort.

I don't know. In this case, it's clearly not Krome's fault. If their claim is correct, that the DLC is finished, then it's Konami that is preventing it from happening.

What I find most interesting about that was that one of the standards I knew MS had was that the game had to ship with 1000 achievable points. This was in reaction to games that didn't ship with the 1000 and then never did anything further at all.

I don't think it was a critical failure standard, but it was there. Either Konami got MS to waive it and promised that the DLC would definitely be out or something changed and it wasn't an issue.

Even so, Activision pulled the same silly goose move with the DLC for MUA2 (And MUA1, come to think of it.) I now have 250 'empty' points that would require me to find somebody with the DLC so I can unlock it (hint, hint). But at least with MUA1, if you can find the Platinum (or Greatest Hits version if the PS3 has one) version, it at least comes with the DLC. MUA2 hasn't been that lucky.

Oh, given the situation I find myself, I'm in kind of a pressing mood to get some achievements.

This means ACB, MUA2, and much of the same list as before. (I'll search for it and edit it in for perusal.)

This also means that I'm in a major mood to dump the collectable weapons for Fable 3. No matter what happens, I won't need them anymore, so who ever wants them first needs to let me know.

    EDIT:
Here is the list again. (Damn the search function sucks.)

ACB (Well...yeah. But that basically means larger groups to grind XP so it's harder to arrange.)
    GTAIV
Ticket to Ride (This is a true thorn in my side. 25 fucking ranked wins my ass!)
    Stuntman Ignition
    Blood Bowl
    Ghostbusters
Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway (I already have all the points, but it sure would be nice actually finishing it. Needs four people, though.)
Hardwood Backgammon (I suppose I could play 10 games with randos, but why would I want to?)
MARVEL Ultimate Alliance (Another four player thing. I think I can fake the 'arcade' stuff, though.)
    MARVEL Ultimate Alliance 2

And I didn't mention these games because I doubt getting much of a response or, in one case, kind of already busy. But just for completion's sake:
    MLB 2K11
Saint's Row 2 (Currently playing with PaperLuigi 44, but if he isn't interested in getting the badges...)
Football Manager 2008 (Nobody ever responds. But there you go.)
Fable III* (Just need help with the easy co-op ones. Only need the earn 1000 gold co-op.)
Green Day Rock Band (Mostly just beating the game in less than 12 hours with four people.)
Crackdown (Just want help with 'Psych Out'. Might be convinced enough to buy the remaining DLC.)

And these have empty MP points, but I have no particular will to give a shit about them. Still, they're there and if they're easy enough, I might consider it.
Kane and Lynch Dead Men (Sadly 'lost' the game... Others may follow shortly.)
Ace Combat 6 (Already have the co-op ones. Just need the rest.)
    Ridge Racer 6 (Again...'lost'.)
    Splinter Cell Double Agent
    Saint's Row

I've hit a plateau myself as far as my objectives. I need 13k to break 100k, but I want to get 90% completion percentage within the same time. I have the games to do both, but I've been spending a lot of time in gears lately. Going to do the DLCS for New Vegas, and hopefully wrap that game up this weekend though.

then maybe I'll try and swing back into gears of war 3 and do the collectibles, horse and other less tie consuming achieves. trying to get Super Reload so I can clear the last boss in Arcade though, without cheese farming bots. :T

Ahhh... Platinum done on L. A. Noire, for my fifth. Still have a few DLC trophies to finish up, but since it was a rental, those may have to wait. Now I should probably get around to finishing Batman: AA and starting Darksiders, among many other games on my backlog. And look at that poor little sig, with no games played on Steam in the past two weeks.

If you think Seriously 3.0 is bullshit, you should check out the Star Ocean: The Last Hope achievement to get all battle trophies. It requires multiple playthroughs of the game and incredibly obscure (and sometimes immensely difficult) scenarios to pull off. For example, doing a completely PRECISE amount of a specific kind of magic damage in a single combat (some of these even become impossible if you over level too much). Seriously 3.0 is still stupid, but at least it's something that could be got from just regular play eventually if their DLC pans out well enough over a year or so life cycle.

Playing a single player JRPG multiple times and needing to make obscure requirements for battle trophies is the definition of "complete bullshit" to me.

So I picked up Fable III for cheap but still haven't finished Fable II. Are the collectible weapons something that I can just pop the game in for 5 minutes and get?

I should probably just finish Fable II and see what all the hubbub is about. Gears 3 has been taking up a lot of my time though.

I might be up for doing that Green Day achievement with you Santa, if you have a free spot on guitar or bass. I already have it though, if someone else wants to do it.

  • Santa ClaustrophobiaSanta Claustrophobia Ho Ho Ho Disconnecting from Xbox LIVERegistered User regular
I think you need to play to at least the point you can go places, but yeah. You don't have to do much of anything but sit there and wait whilst I gift everything. It will just take longer than five minutes, though.

For Fable II, how far are you in the game? There's a tip that makes getting the ending achievements easier than just replaying the whole game.

And for GDRB, we're kind of talking about it in the RB thread. Pop in there and let us know so we can work it out.

ugh... falling horribly behind in my goals.

I just stumbled on this article too, thought it was an interesting statement. Pre-owned Heavy Rain lost us $13m - Quantic Dream

What makes it relevant to this thread:
“We know from the PS3’s trophy system that probably more than three million people bought this game and played it. On my small level it's a million people playing my game without giving me one cent,” de Fondaumiere told GamesIndustry.biz"

Interesting way to track "lost revenue," though. But I guess data on achievements and trophies can be used like that.

Hey guy, you also 'lost' millions of dollars in sales by signing a publishing deal with SONY and limiting the title to the one console with the lowest install base. Why not blame SONY for not making games for the Xbox?

Of course, he'd probably complain about 'lost' revenue when 360 owners also bought copies used.

You should! I've been thinking about going back to get some of those myself... I have 80/1000 on it.

With moar upgrades, my time in ME2 has become less of an attrition grind. Still strongly in the less "Gears of Effect" camp for ME 3 though, and my optimism on that has been fairly shaken. And with assault horizon waiting at home now, pretty sure that effort is going to hit the back burner.
